-LyondellBasell and Neste declare Commercial-scale Production of Bio-based Plastic from Renewables

LyondellBasell, one of the largest plastics, chemicals and refining companies in the world, and Neste, the world’s largest producer of renewable diesel from waste and residues, announced the first parallel production of bio-based polypropylene and bio-based low-density polyethylene at a commercial scale.

The joint project used Neste’s renewable hydrocarbons derived from sustainable bio-based raw materials, such as waste and residue oils. The project successfully produced several thousand tonnes of bio-based plastics which are approved for the production of food packaging and being marketed under Circulen and Circulen Plus, the new family of LyondellBasell circular economy product brands. -Asian petrochemical market expected to be mixed this week

The Asian petrochemical market is expected to be mixed this week, as per SPGlobal Platts.  While benzene is expected to see continued support from firm buying interest and a strong China market, paraxylene hinges on downstream purified terephthalic acid amid a volatile September PTA futures last week and polyethylene terephthalate/polyester operation cuts. In olefins, market participants will be monitoring supply conditions closely.

Asian paraxylene prices were assessed down US$0.67/mt from Thursday at US$837/mt CFR Taiwan/China and US$818/mt FOB Korea Friday. Week on week, the CFR Taiwan/China marker was assessed down US$1/mt.

Angelo Radici: “The global scenario in which companies operate today is influenced by the uncertainties linked to the question of China-US duties and geopolitical instability. For us the contraction of the automotive market also weighs heavily”
Consolidated turnover of 1,211 million euros (+ 6%), amounting to 185 million (+ 16%) and net income for the year after amortization and depreciation of 97 million (+ 19%): these are the main figures for 2018 for RadiciGroup that operates with 3100 employees in 16 countries in the chemical, technopolymer and synthetic fiber businesses.

“It was an exceptional year – declared RadiciGroup president Angelo Radici – that made us close 2018 with record numbers. Although in the last part of the year we felt the first slowdowns that are prolonging in 2019.

In any case I think I can say that we will be able to have a half-year report with stable margins despite the contraction in volumes. As for the second part of the current year, it will be a bit more difficult but still with a view to positive results, although certainly lower than 2018.

The global scenario in which companies operate today is influenced by the uncertainties linked to the issue of China-US duties and geopolitical instability.

The contraction of the automotive market to which we are trying to cope with great efforts in terms of research and innovation aimed at expanding the product portfolio also with materials with reduced environmental impact and creating new market opportunities increasingly attentive to the sustainability of companies “.

-Petit Bateau launches “superknit” to protect babies

Petit Bateau has introduced a superknit fabric that puts babies in airplane mode by blocking an average of 99.5 percent of WiFi and smartphone radio frequency waves.

The wave blocking collection features a cap and blanket and combines the brand’s finest cotton yarn with a silver-coated yarn in a double-faced jersey that has been designed to wrap babies in a protective bubble away from what it calls the “ultra-connected world, where WiFi and smartphones are everywhere, from our homes to the streets”.

-End-of-Life Vehicle Project Proves Viable Market for Recycled Plastics From Automobiles

The results of the final two phases of the End-of-Life Vehicle (ELV) Recycling Demonstration Project were released by the Plastics Industry Association (PLASTICS) on Wednesday, May 29.

Phases II and III of the ELV Project demonstrated that recovering valuable thermoplastic polyolefin (TPO) from ELV bumpers is feasible.

Launched in 2015, the ELV Project was designed to study the viability of collecting and recycling plastic car parts, including car bumpers, to eventually be broken down and used as materials to make new products. Polymers Petrochemicals Bioplastic Automotive

-Growing Demand for Purified Terephthalic Acid (PTA) to Significantly Increase Revenues Through 2015-2025

Purified terephthalic acid (PTA) is produced by chemical synthesis of crude oil. Majority of the purified terephthalic acid (PTA) is utilized in production of polyester resin which is used in the manufacture of polyester film, polyethylene terephthalate (PET) resin, and polyester fiber.

The remaining percent of the purified terephthalic acid (PTA) is employed in manufacture of liquid crystal polymers, terephthaloyl chloride, cyclohexanedimethanol, plasticizers, and copolyester-ether elastomers.

-Can Bioplastics Replace Plastics?

Bioplastics are are made out of natural materials, and are easily degradable. Thus, they cause little harm to the environment. The conventional plastics are products of chemicals from fossil fuels which are energy intense and green house emission. This creates a need to alternative plastics.

How does BioPlastics Function and Benefit?

Bioplastics are not new in the market; they already exist either wholly or partially. They are called bioplastics because they are made from natural materials. Several bioplastics can biodegrade; however they need industrial composting settings to do so.

-New analysis reveals achieving U.S. recycled plastics goals by 2030 could cost £2.4bn

According to new analysis by Wood Mackenzie Chemicals, up to $3 billion (approximately £2.4 billion) in additional capital investment would be required to achieve current U.S. recycled plastics content goals by 2030.

Wood Mackenzie Chemicals says the U.S. recycling rate of PET bottles has historically been sluggish, with little-to-no apparent growth. In 2017, the U.S. recycling rate sat at 29.2 per cent according to NAPCOR, while the global average was estimated at just under 56 per cent. Polymers Petrochemicals Bioplastic Automotive
