The diplomatic relationship between the United States and Venezuela is in shambles — and it hit a new low this week.

Despite soaring tensions between the Trump administration and the regime of Nicolas Maduro, the two nations still share a crucial link: oil.

The United States is Venezuela’s biggest and most important oil customer, accounting for 39% of the OPEC nation’s deliveries last year, according to ClipperData.

And Venezuela was the fourth-biggest source of foreign oil that flowed into America last October.

The United States is considering moves to cripple Venezuela’s oil shipments, which account for nearly all of the country’s exports

Potential U.S. sanctions on Venezuela’s crude oil exports would cut off the nation from Gulf Coast refiners that are among its biggest customers, likely forcing it to send more crude to China, India or other Asian countries, traders said on Wednesday.

U.S. refineries that depend on Venezuela’s heavy crude would have even more trouble securing supplies as Canadian and Mexican crudes are often not as discounted and are limited in availability.

The United States is considering moves to cripple Venezuela’s oil shipments, which account for nearly all of the country’s exports, in response to the reelection of President Nicolas Maduro that was widely viewed as a sham.

Production problems in the purified terephthalic acid (PTA) chain in Europe continue to cast a shadow over the market, but weak demand and buyers’ short-term pessimistic outlook in dominant Asia is subduing the potential impact.

– US-China trade talks encourage buyer pessimism in Asia

– Europe supply characterised by technical glitches

– Sales of PTA subdued due to downstream imports in low season

As February approaches there is a distinct sense of pessimism emanating from Asian buyers monitoring the US-China trade war.

The negative outlook is short term and partly due to the upcoming Chinese Lunar New Year holiday.

The uncertainty surrounding markets in general could mean sentiment and directions change at any given moment.

For now, it offers to counterbalance the apparent lack of stability in European production.
