-XG Sciences partners with Niagara Bottling to advance graphene PET innovations in food & beverage packaging

XG Sciences (XGS) recently announced that it has entered into an Intellectual Property License, Joint Development and Commercialization Agreement with Niagara Bottling, a market leader in beverage packaging innovation and one of the largest beverage companies in the U.S.

The agreement provides XG Sciences with an exclusive license to Niagara’s patents and proprietary know-how related to the use of graphene nanoplatelets in PET in certain bottle applications. Under the agreement, Niagara will assist XGS with field engineering support to install products into the manufacturing lines for new customers – greatly reducing the manufacturer’s time to market.

-Circular Economy: Hot Topic at K 2019 Preserving value – saving resources!

Plastic products have become an integral part of almost every area of life.

For good reason. Plastic packaging extends the shelf life of food, plastic parts in cars reduces their weight and CO2 emissions.

In medicine, plastics ensure maximum hygiene standards and make medical products safe.

Despite its many advantages, this important raw material has come into disrepute for some time now – because of the plastic waste that pollutes entire regions and floats in huge carpets on the world’s oceans.

But this problem can be solved. As the concept of “circular economy” plays a central role in this, it has become a hot topic at K 2019, the world´s flagship fair for plastics and rubber, which will be hosted from 16 to 23 October 2019 in Düsseldorf/Germany.

-Online-paintable Fuel Filler Flap Made from PBT

Customised compounds based on polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) can be an alternative to thermoplastics.

Particularly in the production of fuel filler flaps, this can be seen in the new Skoda Scala for example, whose fuel filler flap is made from Pocan B5221XF. The PBT compound was given preference over a blend of polyphenylene ether and polyamide (PPE+PA). “Our material is less expensive and exhibits comparable performance when it comes to surface quality, paintability and mechanical properties. In addition, it is suitable for electrostatic painting.  Polymers Petrochemicals Crude PET

-China PP market to outperform PE in H2 despite more new capacities

China’s polypropylene (PP) market is set to be weighed by a high number of plant start-ups in the second half of this year.

The number of new PP plants starting up is 70% more than the number of PE start-ups in the latter half of 2019.

The price gap between China’s PP and PE markets will likely become narrower because of these new capacities, but it will be capped by the increase in PE imports.

-Avantium commercialising PEF production

CHEMICALS company Avantium is commercialising production of polyethylene furanoate (PEF), a 100% renewable and fully recyclable polymer.

PEF is a polyester based on bio-based 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) and monoethylene glycol (MEG). FDCA is used as a replacement for terephthalic acid, a petroleum-based monomer which is primarily used to produce polyethylene terephthalate (PET). The bioplastic PEF is suitable for bottles, fibres, and multiple film types. Polymerisation to produce PEF has been successfully initiated at pilot plant scale.
