A Lightweight option has been added to Agr’s Process Pilot blow-moulder management system to help producers get closer to meeting sustainability goals.
According to Agr, the Process Pilot system, with the Lightweight option, provides assurance that the limited material available for producing a lightweight PET bottle is distributed exactly where it needs to be, and at the appropriate thickness, to ensure proper performance.
Most avenues to sustainability are not under the direct control of the bottle manufacturer or brand owner, but the reduction and optimisation of the amount of resin used to make the bottles certainly is. Resin (or weight) reduction per bottle does not need to be excessive to have an impact with regards to sustainability and financial benefits, particularly when factoring in the quantity of bottles produced over a given period of time.
Crude Oil Prices Trend
The Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) will cooperate with OMV to explore new opportunities in petrochemicals and OMV’s ReOil plastic-to-oil technology, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) company said.
ADNOC signed two memorandums of understanding (MoUs) with the Austria-based energy and petrochemicals producer on Saturday.
The first MoU involves evaluating potential petrochemical projects and exchanging knowledge in refinery-petrochemical integration and optimisation, possibly extending their existing relationship.
The second MoU involves the possibility of OMV’s ReOil technology in Ruwais, where ADNOC’s integrated refining and petrochemicals hub is located.
OMV’s ReOil recycling process uses thermal cracking to produce synthetic crude oil from plastic waste.
“The agreements with OMV build on, and further strengthen, our long-term partnership across the full oil and gas value chain,” said Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, UAE Minister of State and ADNOC Group CEO.
Association announces its 2019 Plastics Recycling Showcase.
The Association of Plastic Recyclers (APR), Washington, recently recognized four innovations in plastics recycling as part of the 2019 APR Plastics Recycling Showcase. The event was held during the 2019 Plastics Recycling Conference and Trade Show in National Harbor, Maryland, March 11-13.
The APR says it developed the showcase to highlight and promote industry-leading innovations that have a positive effect on plastics collection and recycling. In determining the showcase, the APR focuses on recently commercialized innovations developed by its member companies.
On the occasion of the 14th German packaging congress in Berlin, the German Packaging Institute (dvi) has surveyed consumers about their opinion about plastics, packaging and sustainability.
The tns-infratest survey yielded interesting results. Every other consumer (45.4 per cent) considers themselves responsible for ocean plastic waste as part of the consumer society. Product and packaging manufacturers and retailers are deemed to be almost equally responsible at 35.8 per cent.
When asked about suitable measures to avoid waste, consumers had a clear vision. For packaging, 40 per cent of consumers would like a stronger focus on important core tasks such as protection and safety (43.7 per cent). More than a third would like to see a boost for the development of alternative packaging materials (37.5 per cent).
Metal-to-plastic conversions for underhood applications continue to advance both for next-generation internal combustion engines (ICEs) and electrical vehicles (EVs).

Kenya to benefit from Sh3.8b Coca-Cola PET recycling project
Kenya is amongst the countries in Africa set to benefit from a Sh3.8 billion fund from Coca-Cola to stimulate plastic recycling industries and create awareness on plastic waste pollution.
Through the funding, the beverage manufacturer will speed up the collection and recycling of PET plastic bottles in Southern, East and Central Africa in the next three years addressing the implementation of its global World Without Waste vision, aimed to collect and recycle close to 100 per cent of the packaging it sells by 2030.
“We have formulated strategies to ensure that our post-consumer plastic bottles do not pollute the environment as wastes. We are creating value from our bottles in a bid to drive and sustain a green economy,” said Ahmed Rady, General Manager, Coca-Cola East & Central Africa Franchise.
Oil prices mixed on economic slowdown fears, supply hopes
Oil prices were mixed on Monday, as concerns about a slowdown in global economic growth lingered, offset by the prospect of tighter U.S. crude supply.
Brent crude oil futures settled at $67.21 a barrel, up 18 cents, while U.S. crude fell to $58.82 a barrel, down 22 cents.
“Some of the weakness we saw earlier was related to the reawakening of concerns surrounding demand growth,” said Gene McGillian, vice president of market research at Tradition Energy in Stamford, Connecticut.

“In some cases, the consumer will not actually notice the difference, because the products that can be produced in yeast in some cases will mimic exactly what can already be produced.
