-ExxonMobil invests USD2 billion in the expansion of the petrochemical complex in Baytown

ExxonMobil intends to invest USD2 billion in the expansion of the petrochemical complex in Baitoun in the US state of Texas, Prime reports with reference to the company.

Exxon plans to build a new division of a polymer production plant with a capacity of 400 thousand tons per year by 2022.

As the head of the company, Darren Woods, said, the expansion of the project will allow Exxon to maximize profits from the growth of hydrocarbon production in the Permian basin in the United States, as well as to meet the growing demand for petrochemical products.

-MCC worth USD5.27 billion to be built in Uzbekistan

The gas chemical complex with a total value of USD5.27 billion will be implemented in the Baysun district of Uzbekistan, Uzdaily reports.

An agreement providing for the exploration and development of the Mustakilliqning 25 gas field in the Baysun district with the further construction of a gas chemical complex was signed in April 2017 with Russian investors during the state visit of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev to Russia.

The project is scheduled to be implemented in two stages: at the first stage – in 2018–2022 – it is planned to build a processing plant with an annual capacity of 5 billion cubic meters per year;  At the second stage, calculated for 2023–2025, it is planned to build a gas chemical complex capable of producing 500 thousand tons of polymer products per year by processing 1.5 billion cubic meters of gas.

-Axion Polymers welcomes proposed 500ppm decaBDE limit for recycled plastics

A 500ppm limit of flame retardant decaBDEs within recycled compounds and articles that looks set to be agreed by the EU Commission soon has been welcomed by Axion Polymers as ‘leaving the door open’ for plastic recycling and the use of recyclate in new products.

A 500ppm limit of flame retardant decaBDEs within recycled compounds and articles that looks set to be agreed by the EU Commission soon has been welcomed by Axion Polymers as ‘leaving the door open’ for plastic recycling and the use of recyclate in new products.

The Manchester-based plastics recycler describes the 500ppm level in recycled plastics as a ‘workable’ solution, although it would be tougher to achieve than the proposed 1,000ppm in line with most REACH and RoHS regulations. Virgin polymers have a 10ppm limit.Polymers Petrochemicals Plastic Renewability

-Rejuvenation commits to sustainably-sourced textiles

Expanding their commitment to sustainability through their product assortment, Rejuvenation has announced that all textiles will now be sustainably sourced and made from organic fibres. Further, the Oregon-based company will also completely revamp its bedding assortment and will now only offer textiles that are 100 per cent organic fibre construction.

Rejuvenation’s new linen bedding collection is crafted with 100 per cent organic flax fibres at a Fair Trade Certified factory and is Oeko-Tex Standard 100-certified, surpassing the highest criterion of testing for harmful chemicals and synthetics. Rejuvenation’s new Sateen Bedding collection is made with 100 per cent organic cotton and crafted at a family-owned factory in Guimarães, Portugal. The cotton is certified to the Global Organic Textiles Standard (GOTS), which is recognised as the world’s leading processing standard for textiles, ensuring both organic fibre composition as well as a finished product free from harsh chemical residues.

-ACC urges US to reject higher tariffs

The American Chemistry Council is pushing back against President Donald Trump’s plan to raise tariffs on $200 billion in imports from China if Washington and Beijing are unable to agree on a new trade pact in talks this week.

In a statement late May 6, ACC said that “the risks of continuing to use tariffs as a negotiating tactic with China are simply too high — and any potential benefits still unclear.”

U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer told reporters May 6 that Washington was preparing to raise tariffs on May 10 on $200 billion in Chinese imports, from their current 10 percent level to 25 percent. President Trump first tweeted over the weekend that he planned to raise the tariffs.

U.S. officials accuse China of backtracking on previous commitments in the trade talks. A spokesman for China’s Foreign Ministry told reporters that Beijing has “good faith” in continuing talks and that “raising tariffs won’t resolve any problem.”

-A next-generation plastic that can be recycled again and again

Plastic pollution has increased in the past few decades. No doubt, plastic has a number of valuable uses- we have become addicted to single-use or disposable plastic. Every year, we produce about 300 million tonnes of plastic waste and half of all plastic produced is designed to be used only once — and then thrown away, meaning it ends up in landfills or the ocean.

To overcome this problem, the scientists at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in California, US, have developed a new kind of plastic that can be re-manufactured back into the same type of plastic in a more sustainable way. And that too without losing any quality or performance..Polymers Petrochemicals Plastic Renewability

-New research shows that biodegradable plastics aren’t really biodegradable

Making plastic from biological sources could be a solution, but supporting infrastructure is necessary.

The idea of a “biodegradable” plastic suggests material that would degrade to little or nothing over a period of time, posing less of a hazard to wildlife and the environment.

This is the sort of claim often made by plastic manufacturers, yet recent research has revealed supposedly biodegradable plastic bags still intact after three years spent either at sea or buried underground.

So un-degraded were these bags that they were still able to hold more than two kilos of shopping.

The study’s authors, Imogen Napper and Richard Thompson at the University of Plymouth, tested compostable, biodegradable, oxo-biodegradable, and conventional polythene plastic bags in three different natural environments: buried in the ground, outdoors exposed to air and sunlight, and submerged in the sea.

-First CFRTP for High-Volume Production Vehicles Now in Use

Teijin’s Sereebo carbon fiber reinforced thermoplastic selected by GM for use in select pickup box applications.

What is said to be the world’s first use of carbon fiber reinforced thermoplastic (CFRTP) for structural parts in a high-volume production vehicle is being used in the optional CarbonPro pickup box for General Motors’s GMC Sierra Denali 1500 and GMC Sierra AT4 1500. Jointly developed by Tokyo-based Teijin LTD (U.S. office in Greenwood, S.C.) and Detroit-based GM at Teijin’s technical center in Auburn Hills, Mich., the Sereebo CFRT high-volume composites manufacturing process is specifically being used for the  pickup box’s inner headboard, side and floor panels. Compared to steel, CarbonPro is 40% lighter, offers 10 times greater impact resistance, is more corrosion-resistant, and is even more readily recyclable.
