A North American post-consumer plastics reclaimer is expanding to process additional curbside-grade film, a move the company attributes to rising demand among end users.
Enviroplast, a Canadian reclaimer with facilities in Quebec and Ontario, recently installed a new wash line in one plant and is gearing up for significant expansion in the other. The company’s processing growth has been driven by increased end-user demand, alongside improving output quality from the company’s post-consumer film suppliers.
Mathieu Séguin, Enviroplast CEO, said processors must make significant equipment improvements to meet that incoming demand.
South Korea’s imports of Iranian crude last month reached 1.2 million tons, or 8.8 million barrels which was a 23-percent increase on February and a fivefold increase in January, when Korean refiners resumed their purchases of Iranian crude.

HÀ NỘI — Elimination of many tariff lines for goods under the CPTPP has helped Việt Nam’s exports to Japan increase sharply in the first quarter of this year, according to the General Department of Customs.
Việt Nam’s export value to Japan in the first quarter surged 6.7 per cent year on year to US$4.6 billion, the general department said. Việt Nam became one of three markets gaining an export value in the billions of US dollars to Japan, after the US and China.

Coca-Cola Amatil (CCA) has pledged to double the amount of recycled plastic it sources for inclusion in plastic bottle production, after green campaigners criticised parent firm The Coca-Cola Company for its continued use of high quantities of virgin plastics.
The commitment will see CCA, which is the largest soft drinks bottler in Australia, incorporate more than 10,000 tonnes of pre and post-consumer recycled (PCR) plastics in its range of bottles annually by 2020.
This move will enable the company to produce all bottles with a capacity of 600ml or less using 100% recycled plastic, while also doubling the proportion of recycled content in all other bottle ranges. Selected lines in the firm’s 600ml and under range, which includes on-the-go bottles for the likes of Sprite, Fanta, Coca-Cola and Mount Franklin, will be launched in 100% recycled bottles by the end of 2019.

Tight polyethylene (PE) supply for some grades in Europe is leading to stronger pressure on buyers for April pricing.
Last week, Dow stopped all new orders for April, adding a supplement of €70/tonne, compared to March business.
Other sellers are still talking of plus €50/tonne for end-month retroactive business.
Buyers’ early expectations for April settlements were at €30/tonne increase.
In some cases, this is still the case, but low density polyethylene (LDPE) and linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE) have been but tightening due to some production issues and fewer imports, leading to stronger targets from some producers.

Your article (Plastic plague: tiny particles can reach anywhere on the planet, say scientists, 16 April) says that “about 335m tonnes of plastic is produced each year, and while it degrades extremely slowly it can be broken into smaller and smaller pieces”. It adds that these pieces are now being blown around the world by the wind.
Perhaps one day there will be no plastic, but until then a way must be found to make it become biodegradable much more quickly, so that it can be recycled back into nature by naturally occurring bacteria and fungi.
