The latest news on the How2Recycle labeling program for sustainably recyclable packaging that’s expanding at a rate of 80 new products daily.

Since its launch in 2012, the How2Recycle program managed by the sustainability leaders at GreenBlue has followed a four-point set of guidelines:

Reduce confusion by creating a clear, well-understood, and nationally harmonized label that enables companies to convey to consumers how to recycle a package.

Improve the reliability, completeness, and transparency of recyclability claims.

Provide a labeling system that follows Federal Trade Commission Green Guides.

Increase the availability and quality of recycled material.

Selfridges is now giving customers clothes bags made from recycled plastic bottles.

The covers have been supplied by Jutexpo, an eco-friendly reusable bag company, and have been made using an innovative process to recycle plastic bottles into fabric.

The covers are available in small, medium and large and each one is made using seven, eight and 12 plastic bottles respectively.

They have been rolled out in-store since the beginning of January and are now available in all Selfridges stores. The retailer expects the first six months of garment covers will result in more than 222,000 plastic bottles being recycled from post-consumer waste.

Captain Mike Meade (M3 Marine): We’ve come apart because of huge oversupply. “[There’s] too much steel and too much debt”

The Asian and African markets are showing some signs of improvement but the oversupply problem is still obvious in both areas, Captain Mike Meade of M3 Marine said yesterday.

Captain Meade noted that while Clarkson’s OSV index has historically tended to follow the oil price, this has not been the case in recent years. “We’ve got a decoupling in this cycle, a decoupling we’ve never seen before,” he said.

And the explanation? “We’ve come apart because of huge oversupply. [There’s] too much steel and too much debt, and none of us saw shale oil coming.

The history of modern biotechnology began around four decades ago, with the invention of genetic engineering. In this piece, we explore the story of how Genentech, one of the fundamental companies of this field, helped to set many trends for modern biotech companies today.

Biotechnology, the exploitation of living organisms and their products, doesn’t necessarily involve labs — in fact, humans have been using forms of biotechnology for millennia, for example, in alcohol breweries.

However, the type of biotech that we are referring to is modern biotechnology, involving genetic engineering and cell manipulation beyond what you could expect via breeding or fermentation.

A green initiative propelled by government support and kept alive through catchy slogans, recycling has become integrated into our lives. We all remember growing up with those three looped arrows, and now we glance down at our trash and decide whether to throw it into the gray or blue bins at Davidson.

Since 1950, 8,300 million metric tons of plastic have been produced worldwide, but recent research has determined only a small fraction of that has been recycled. Now, the emerging debate is about whether recycling is the best way to manage this massive amount of waste.

From films to rigid bottles, PEN is making inroads for packaging beer, juice, and foods, due to properties such as high dimensional and temperature stability, and shrinkage resistance.

During the Packaging Conference 2017, the use of PEN (polyethylene naphthalate) as part of a PEN/PET copolymer generated some interest, but in large part, we haven’t heard a great deal about its use in packaging applications for a while.

A new research report by Global Market Insights, Inc., however, says otherwise. It estimates the U.S. PEN market from packaging applications may exceed $640 million by 2024. The forecast says PEN is “used for food packaging applications as it provides high-barrier properties and [is] less permeable to water vapor and oxygen. Additionally, [PEN] reduces oxidation effects in containers, making it ideal for food preservation purposes.
