-Chemical recycling may offer help on e-plastics

An industry group has identified six advanced recycling projects that target plastics from electronics. One of the tech developers is a prominent North American e-scrap processor.

Closed Loop Partners last month released a market-landscape report detailing the fast-evolving “chemical recycling” sector. Chemical recycling encompasses processing systems that use heat, pressure, solvents and other methodologies to convert recovered plastics into oils, fuels and feedstocks for new plastics and other petrochemical products. -Oil tumbles, with U.S. prices at 2-month low, poised to suffer biggest one-day loss of the year

Oil futures tumbled on Thursday, U.S. prices heading for a more than two-month low and poised to suffer their largest single-session loss of the year.

A broad aversion to assets perceived as risky gripped global markets, knocking down equities as investors weighed worsening U.S.-China trade tensions.

It’s “a risk-off day” with the equity markets “falling out of bed,” said Marshall Steeves, energy markets analyst at Informa Economics.

The U.S. Energy Information Administration data Wednesday “were bearish between the crude stock build and recovery in production, and there is some follow-through selling in reaction to that,” he told MarketWwatch. Polymers Petrochemicals Smart Packaging

-Smurfit Kappa takes step toward becoming a fully circular business

Smurfit Kappa is making significant progress in its journey towards becoming a fully sustainable and circular business, according to its latest Sustainable Development Report (SDR).

Smurfit Kappa reached a number of key milestones throughout 2018, including the launch of its Better Planet Packaging initiative that seeks to reduce packaging waste by creating more sustainable packaging solutions through design, innovation, and recycling capabilities. The initiative sparked a huge amount of interest from customers keen to replace non-recyclable materials with paper-based packaging.

An ambitious new set of sustainability goals was unveiled having met or exceeded previous targets ahead of their 2020 deadline. Smurfit Kappa has had a long-term commitment to making real and measurable progress against its five strategic sustainability priorities of forest, climate change, water, waste and people.

-Waste food can be used to produce biodegradable chemical

Engineers at the University of Waterloo have developed a technology that can help extract the biodegradable chemical from waste food that can be refined as a source of energy.

According to the study published in the ‘Bioresource Technology’, the chemical could also be used to replace petroleum-based chemicals in a host of products including drugs and plastic packaging.

“People like me, environmental biotechnologists, look at food waste as a tremendous resource. With the right technologies, we can extract numerous useful chemicals and fuel from it,” said Hyung-Sool Lee, a civil and environmental engineering professor at Waterloo.Polymers Petrochemicals Smart Packaging

-DuPont launches new masterbatch combining anti-block and slip for PE blown film at Chinaplas 2019

DuPont has launched its new Dow Corning AMB-12235 masterbatch for PE blown film at the Chinaplas 2019 show.

The masterbatch combines an anti-block agent with a compatible slip additive to improve film processing and ensure consistent quality.

By creating synergistic effects through the right combination and amount of each active ingredient, the solution delivers a low coefficient of friction over time.

It also helps prevent migration to the film surface that can affect downstream operations and helps reduce film blocking that can cause damage, at all cost-effective low loadings.

-Asia naphtha market flips to contango on supply overhang

Asia’s naphtha forward market structure flipped to a contango from a backwardation, with prompt-month prices weaker than forward months amid ample supply and slack demand.

Open-specification naphtha prices for first-half July delivery stood at $551.75/tonne CFR (cost and freight) Japan basis at early hours session, down from the previous day’s close at $562.25/tonne CFR Japan.

Prices for second-half July delivery stem stood at $552.25/tonne CFR Japan, reflecting the contango spread between the two inter-half months, according to ICIS data.

-US-China trade war brings advantages, challenges to Chinese re-export converters

The ongoing US-China trade war has brought both advantages and challenges to Chinese re-export converters, participants said on the sidelines of this year’s Chinaplas.

Chinese re-export converters purchase imported resins and then export the finished product after processing the resins. Through government incentive programs, these converters are able to reclaim customs duties and other taxes incurred after exporting the finished product.

“We have been receiving offers for US polyethylene (PE) at very attractive levels in recent months, which has caused us to purchase more of our raw materials from the US rather than our normal Middle Eastern suppliers,” a Chinese re-export converter said.

-Additives:Translucent ‘Frost’ Effect Colorants for PET Bottles

PolyOne’s Smartbatch Frost Collecton of color masterbatches launched at Chinaplas 2019

The launch of a new collection of color and additive masterbatches that offer a translucent ‘frost’ effect for PET bottles, was made at Chinaplas 2019 by PolyOne Corp., Avon Lake, Ohio. The Smartbatch Frost Collection  was developed in response to increasing demand from regional brands in China for greater product differentiation, this collection of color and additive formulations also offers to streamline production and reduce manufacturing cost.

When added to PET resins during the injection stretch-blow molding (ISBM) process, Smartbatch Frost Collection reportedly provides a soft, cool, and icy look with better slip-resistant performance than typical PET bottles.
