-Hydrogen-Powered Cars Could Be More Competitive in the Future
Hydrogen fuel cell vehicles are gaining some traction as automakers and governments plot the demise of the internal combustion engine, but the technology still has many speed bumps to overcome.
The power plants in vehicles that use hydrogen fuel for power can operate in two ways — by converting the chemical energy of hydrogen to mechanical energy either by burning hydrogen in an internal combustion engine or by means of electrochemical reactions.
In the latter case, a fuel — typically hydrogen — is combined with the oxygen in the air to produce energy to power an electric motor.
The only emissions are “harmless water vapor as a byproduct,” said Popular Mechanics in a recent article. While water vapor may seem harmless compared with other types of emissions, it is worth noting that water vapor is the largest greenhouse gas (GHG) in the atmosphere, representing about 72% of GHG.
LyondellBasell today announced another step towards its ambition to advance the circular economy by making virgin quality polymers from raw materials derived from plastic waste at its Wesseling, Germany, site.
Produced by the thermal conversion of plastic waste, this raw material is converted into ethylene and propylene in the LyondellBasell production facilities, and then processed into polypropylene (PP) and polyethylene (PE) in the downstream units for plastics production. The first use of raw material derived from plastic waste follows the company’s successful production of plastic materials made from renewable-based raw materials such as used cooking oil, which helps to reduce CO2 over the product life cycle and reduce the use of fossil-based raw materials.
Textile and apparel brands are invited to take climate action by joining the 85 brands and suppliers committed to replace their use of virgin polyester with recycled polyester to ultimately shift global volume from an average of 14% to 45% by 2025.

The 2025 Recycled Polyester Challenge asks brands to commit to the most ambitious uptake target possible. High percentage rPET commitments from brands are essential to reaching the 2025 45% recycled volume target and for building critical mass to reach an absolute 90% recycled volume share by 2030.

-Trinseo to build commercial PS recycling plant in Belgium

Trinseo will build a full commercial scale polystyrene (PS) recycling plant in Tessenderlo, Belgium that is expected to be operation in 2023.
The company will use depolymerisation which breaks down polymers into their precursors to chemically recycle the material. The recycled PS will have identical properties with virgin PS. Polypropylene Resinprices Petrochemicals
Trinseo is currently working in partnership with Germany’s INEOS Styrolution, and UK-based Recycling Technologies to build a pilot PS plant in the UK in 2022.
INEOS Styrolution also plans to build its own full commercial scale recycling facility in Wingles, France.
Each plant would aim to convert 15,000 tonnes/year of PS waste into recycled styrene.

In his keynote speech at the recent EDANA Outlook virtual conference, Kaushik Mitra, executive director of Düsseldorf-headquartered consultancy IHS Markit, explained that while the Covid-19 pandemic led to unprecedented demand for health, hygiene and medical products, demand from the automotive industry, construction and other durable markets for polypropylene (PP) and polyethylene (PE) was deeply impacted.
“Oil prices collapsed last year in the USA and Middle East and polymer prices followed,” Mitra said. “There was a sharp reduction in imports and recycling became uncompetitive, leading to many manufacturers switching to virgin resin. In the USA, many resin and fibre producers cut back production due to the pandemic and several plant start-ups were delayed for three-to-six months. In Europe the refineries cut back on oil production due to the low demand for fuel, leading to a tight supply for propylene.”

The demand for biodegradable plastics in Vietnam is projected to reach 80,000 tonnes annually by 2025, according to Associate Prof. Dr. Le Hung Anh, Director of the Institute of Environmental Science, Engineering and Management.
At a recent workshop on biodegradable plastic production and consumption held by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment in Ho Chi Minh City, Anh said the growth orientation of Vietnam’s plastics sector now focuses on effectiveness and sustainability.

The deal is the Vancouver-based bioplastics maker’s third acquisition in just over a year.
Vancouver-based bioplastics maker Good Natured Products Inc. is acquiring Ex-Tech Plastics Inc., an extruder of rigid plastic sheets headquartered in Richmond, Ill., for US$14.1 million.
