-Turning Carbon Dioxide Into Hydrocarbon Fuels
AsianScientist – A research team at the Daegu Gyeongbuk Institute of Science and Technology (DGIST) in South Korea has developed photocatalysts that can convert carbon dioxide into usable energy such as methane or ethane. Their findings are published in Energy & Environmental Science. As carbon dioxide emissions increase, the Earth’s temperature rises, with potentially catastrophic consequences on ecosystems and the environment. Hence, there has been increasing interest in reducing carbon dioxide and relying on reusable fuel.
-China’s oil majors risk wasting a good trade war
[HONG KONG] China’s oil majors risk letting a good trade war go to waste. Earnings are gushing at the country’s energy giants, including the US$210 billion PetroChina. They are beneficiaries of US President Donald Trump’s belligerence, which has supported crude prices and opened opportunities in Iran. New rules hampering smaller rivals at home are helping, too.

They are beneficiaries of US President Donald Trump’s belligerence, which has supported crude prices and opened opportunities in Iran. New rules hampering smaller rivals at home are helping, too. The boost to bottom lines and stock prices will please Beijing, but does not obviate the need for longer-term reform.

-Vague policies make investors shy away from plastics sector
Manufacturers have called for clear policies on recycling plastic bottles to attract investors in the plastics and rubber sectors.
Four months ago, the National Environment and Management Authority, Nema, reversed its decision to ban plastic bottles. The reversal followed an agreement with the Kenya Association of Manufacturers that plastics would be recycled and used in the construction industry and other sectors.
-Oil dips as trade row weighs, Iran sanctions expected to cut supply
SINGAPORE (Reuters) – Oil prices fell on Monday on concerns the U.S.-China trade dispute will erode global economic growth, although looming U.S. sanctions against Iran’s oil sector kept crude from falling further, traders said.
-How the war on climate change slams the world’s poor
When a “solution” to a problem causes more damage than the problem, policymaking has gone awry. That’s where we often find ourselves with global warming today.
Activist organizations like Worldwatch argue that higher temperatures will make more people hungry, so drastic carbon cuts are needed
-Crude oil futures slip amid mild profit-taking; market awaits fresh cues
Singapore — Crude oil futures were marginally lower during mid-morning trade in Asia Monday amid some mild profit-taking following the surge during Friday’s trading session on the back of the fall in US rig count.
-Crude Oil Prices Eye OPEC+ Committee Meeting for Direction Cues
Commodity prices rose Friday as a much-anticipated speech from Fed Chair Jerome Powell at the Jackson Hole symposium stuck to familiar themes, leaving the status quo rate hike outlook intact. That translated as disappointed weakness in the US Dollar, which rallied in the prior session in anticipation of an upturn in hawkish rhetoric.
-AIP to run sustainable packaging design training course
The packaging industry is facing increasing demands to meet environmental challenges, and the Australian Institute of Packaging (AIP) will be launching a half-day training course in Melbourne to help businesses address sustainable packaging design.
The production premises of the new plant“Polipack” – like a sewing workshop from Soviet classics. A bright room amazes with scales, women in aprons are smiling, cars are being scribbled. True, they do not sew suits or skirts, but more demanded products: polypropylene bags should return 350 million rubles invested in them in six years
Alexei Lisovichenko, the head of the GC “NEO-COM”, about what is big-bags and how the plant “Polipack” is similar to the sewing workshop
As part of our Mission Possible campaign, edie brings you this weekly round-up of five of the best sustainability success stories of the week from across the globe.
-How Turkey’s political and economic outlook can affect apparel companies
Turkey boasts a strong textile and garment manufacturing sector, one that can be attractive for companies seeking new sourcing locations. But serious political and economic factors should be taken into consideration when considering integrating Turkish manufacturers into the supply chain.
-Technological Solutions for Ecological Challenges
Increasing urbanization, smaller household sizes and an ageing population are fundamentally changing the expectations for food and pharmaceutical packaging. At the same time, there is a growing need for more sustainable packaging solutions and processes. But according to Carsten Weiss, Vice President Engineering at Bosch Packaging Technology, no single company can rise to this challenge alone.
-Marine plastic waste crisis fuels quest for better packaging
Chemical industry sees opportunity in monomaterials and biodegradables
KUALA LUMPUR — With food and beverage companies increasingly moving to curb their use of plastic and investors becoming more environmentally conscious, the world’s chemical industry is under pressure to tackle marine plastic pollution.
-U.S. active drilling rigs reduce sharply while oil prices rebound after 7-week loss

-Local startup AlgoteK creates dissolving plastic
Picture this: in a midday munchies moment, you open the refrigerator to find last night’s leftovers in a bowl covered with plastic wrap. After taking the bowl out of the fridge, you remove the plastic wrap. Instead of throwing the plastic wrap away in the garbage, you turn on the faucet and run the plastic wrap under water until the wrap dissolves and washes harmlessly down the drain.
Such a scenario is closer to reality than you might think. AlgoteK, a start-up company founded by three recent University of Oregon alumni is developing a 100 percent biodegradable plastic product that can dissolve in water in under a minute.
