California sues ExxonMobil over plastics, recycling

California is suing ExxonMobil Corp., alleging the company has misled the public about plastics recycling for decades.

State Attorney General Rob Bonta claims the company has “engaged in a decades-long campaign of deception that caused and exacerbated the global plastics pollution crisis,” the state said in announcing the Sept. 23 legal action.

The 147-page lawsuit pulls no punches, coming out of the gate swinging at plastics and plastics recycling. Recycling

“The plastics industry, through its deceptive public messaging regarding plastic recycling, is responsible for one of the most devastating global environmental crises of our time: the plastic waste and pollution crisis,” the lawsuit states.

California alleges ExxonMobil is the largest producer of plastic that becomes plastic waste in the state and has deceived state residents for “almost a half a century by promising that recycling could and would solve the ever-growing plastic waste crisis.

“All the while, ExxonMobil has known that mechanical recycling, and now ‘advanced recycling,’ will never be able to process more than a tiny fraction of the plastic waste it produces,” the lawsuit alleges. Recycling

While only ExxonMobil is specifically named in the lawsuit at this point, the attorney general left a placeholder in the lawsuit, also naming unknown defendants who also allegedly violated the law. Those unnamed defendants will be added to the complaint once they are discovered, the lawsuit states.

Italian rubber and plastics machinery manufacturers are experiencing a slowdown due to a contracting industrial sector and economic challenges in Germany, according to trade association Amaplast

Following positive results in 2023, imports have consistently decreased in the first half of 2024 compared to the same period last year, with declines reaching double-digit percentages in the second quarter.

This downturn reflects a reduced willingness to invest amid broader economic contraction, significantly impacting the industrial sector. In the second quarter, sales fell 12% year-on-year to €483 million, with noticeable declines in imports from key sources like Germany, China, and Austria. Recycling

Despite this, the first half of 2024 saw exports grow by 2.5% year-on-year to €1.73 billion. However, the period ended on a diminishing trend due to lower demand for various machinery and molds. Exports to Germany, traditionally a main partner, have been lackluster as the country deals with unfavorable economic conditions and political complications. Sales to the US, the second-largest export destination, have also slowed, reversing recent high trends.

Conversely, exports to Spain and Poland increased by 13% and 32% respectively, while demand in France remained stable. Significant growth was recorded in extra-EU markets such as Mexico (+26%), China (+36%), Turkey (+50%), India (+22%), and the UK (+24%). Overall, exports showed substantial growth towards the Far East, North America (excluding the US), extra-EU Europe, and Sub-Saharan Africa. Recycling

Order trends are negative but vary across different technologies. After a particularly negative first quarter, slight signs of recovery have emerged in subsequent months. Due to a 6-9 month lag in export data because of delivery times, Amaplast anticipates a contraction in year-end results compared to 2023.

At the first meeting of security experts under the BRICS+ format in St. Petersburg, significant developments for cooperation between the emerging nations emerged

Discussions focused on the growing role of BRICS and their expansion into new countries, symbolizing a multipolar world order.
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi proposed four security initiatives: peaceful coexistence, independence, autonomy and true multilateralism, opposing Western exceptionalism. Beijing sees BRICS+ as a tool to achieve these goals in a polarized global environment.
Strengthening bilateral relations was central. Recycling
Russia highlighted ties with India, with senior official meetings highlighting the two countries’ enduring alliance. Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar said BRICS represents a new model of international cooperation, uniting emerging powers to counter the exclusivity of the G7 and promote a more equitable global order.
Cooperation between Russia and Iran has been notable, with the confirmation of a strategic partnership focused on the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC), offering an alternative trade route that circumvents Western sanctions. President Putin announced Iran’s official entry into the BRICS, extending the group’s influence in the Middle East. Recycling
Russian Minister Shoigu highlighted the expansion of cooperation between the BRICS security councils, aimed at indivisible security and a multipolar world order, in contrast to the Western strategy of sanctions. These measures have prompted Russia, Iran and China to intensify cooperation in key sectors such as defense, energy and advanced technologies.
A key element is the industrial revolution promoted by the BRICS, with a focus on new technologies. At the BRICS Forum in China, discussions were held on how emerging nations can access technologies despite sanctions, promoting innovation in areas such as artificial intelligence and green technologies. Recycling
Another key theme is China’s central role as the leading trading power and growing cooperation with nations of the Global South. China’s leadership sees BRICS+ as a means to strengthen its influence, offering alternatives to Western economic mechanisms.
This monumental shift in international relations is reducing the influence of the West, still focused on maintaining global hegemony. Western policies collide with the reality of a multipolar world where emerging powers redefine global rules. In this context, hostility towards the rise of China and Russia appears unsustainable in the face of a new, more equitable and polycentric world order. Recycling
