-Geno and Aquafil begin pre-commercial production for plant-based nylon-6

A step closer towards commercialization to fulfill brand demands

Sustainability leader Genomatica (Geno) alongside longtime collaborator Aquafil [ECNL:IM] successfully completed the first demonstration scale production runs for plant-based nylon-6. The material is intended to reshape the $22B nylon industry, enabling brands to meet demand from consumers for sustainable everyday materials from apparel to automotive parts to carpets. Geno and Aquafil have produced the first several tons of plant-based nylon-6 building block caprolactam, have converted it to nylon-6 polymer, and are now in the process of transforming it for evaluation in nylon applications such as yarns for textile and carpet and engineering plastics as part of pre-commercial quantities from demonstration production taking place in Europe.

The companies have been collaborating to first produce pilot-scale quantities of plant-based nylon-6 and have now advanced to produce pre-commercial quantities at demonstration scale which will help determine the final design of future commercial plants. The material will go to leading global brands and their value chain partners who are eager to explore and develop renewable products, create showcase goods and test feedback with customers. “Now, more than ever, global brands are taking action to incorporate sustainable materials into their products,” said Christophe Schilling, Geno CEO. “We’re working to build purposeful, traceable and transparent supply chains, in this case for nylon 6, with the goal to provide more sustainable products that consumers demand and material solutions that can help brands achieve their ESG goals.

“The world needs every possible approach put into action to make supply chains sustainable, and making bio-based nylon an essential piece of that,” said Giulio Bonazzi, Aquafil CEO. “Plant-based nylon can perfectly complement our approach to depolymerizing nylon products once they reach the end of their useful life. Together, we share a vision to lead the transition to more sustainable materials which has driven our long-term collaboration.”

Plant-based nylon-6 is Geno’s third major product line on a path to commercialization. The company has executed high impact deals with a range of brands to accelerate the global commercialization of sustainable materials, with the potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 100 million tons in upcoming years. Recent milestones advancing the sustainable materials transition include: a collaboration with lululemon (NASDAQ: LULU) to bring plant-based materials into lululemon’s products, a production milestone with partner Covestro (OTCMKTS: COVTY) for plant-based HMD used in sustainable coatings, and a partnership with Asahi Kasei (OTCMKTS: AHKSY) and a newly formed venture with Unilever (NASDAQ: UL) to commercialize and scale plant-based alternatives to feedstocks like palm oil or fossil fuels, to make key ingredients used in everyday cleaning and personal care products. -Circular Plastics Alliance extends coverage of MORE platform to rPVC

The European Plastics Converters Association (EuPC, Brussels; www.plasticsconverters.eu) said its online platform for converters – Monitoring Recyclates for Europe (MORE) – has extended its coverage to include also recycled PVC resins. The decision was made at the end of June by both the Monitoring Secretariat of the European Commission‘s Circular Plastics Alliance (CPA) and the CPA Monitoring Working Group.

The CPA was formed in 2019 by over 300 organisations representing industry, academia, and public authorities with the goal of achieving the EU targets of 10 mn t/y of recycled polymers use by 2025. Russian-gas-supplies – PET-dryer

The MORE platform was confirmed recently as a CPA data collector by the alliance’s monitoring secretariat and working group (see Plasteurope.com of 25.02.2022).

The EuPC created the platform for converters to monitor and register the efforts of European processors to reach the EU target for recycled polymer use.

-Alpek, Indorama, FENC JV to resume US PET project in August

Alpek, Indorama and FENC announced earlier today that Corpus Christi Polymers (CCP) will resume construction on the facility in August. The plant is expected to begin production of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and purified terephthalic acid (PTA) in early 2025.

Construction of the state-of-the-art plan is resuming following a period of pandemic-related disruptions.

The new facility is expected to be the largest vertically integrated PTA-PET production plant in the Americas, with annual capacities of 1.1m tonnes of PET and 1.3m tonnes of PTA. It will employ three state-of-the-art technologies: PTA: IntegRex; PET melt: Invista; and PET solid state: Easy Up (HCIRR – horizontal continuous slightly inclined rotary reactor).

The plant’s vertical integration optimises PTA-PET production and ensures additional capacities are available to the PTA and PET markets. Russian-gas-supplies – PET-dryer

Russell Wilson will leave his role with IVL as Head of Manufacturing Americas, Combined PET, to take up a new role as CEO of CCP from 18 July.

PET resins can be broadly classified into bottle, fibre or film grade, named according to the downstream applications. Bottle grade resin is the most commonly traded form of PET resin and it is used in bottle and container packaging through blow molding and thermoforming. Fibre grade resin goes into making polyester fibre, while film grade resin is used in electrical and flexible packaging applications.

-eFactor3 adds infrared dryer demo line

Customers can view demonstrations of the Kreyenborg IR-Batch dryer at eFactor3’s Charlotte, North Carolina, location. Russian-gas-supplies – PET-dryer

Efactor3 LLC has installed a demo infrared (IR) drying line from its partner of seven years Kreyenborg at its facility in Charlotte, North Carolina.

The IR-Batch dryer allows for discontinuous heating, crystallization, drying and coating of batches of different plastics and other bulk materials in minutes instead of hours, according to eFactor3. The equipment can be used to crystallize and dry polyethylene terephthalate (PET) pellets and flakes, to crystallize and dry polylactic acid (PLA) and to dry and heat polyethylene (PE) pellets to remove odors and volatiles. The system uses a combination of IR heating and a rotating drum with an internal spiral that is equipped with mixing elements to ensure constant mixing, avoiding material clumping and ensuring that the material is heated evenly throughout the process eFactor3 says.

The machine is available for small demos and trials at the Charlotte facility and also will be available for short-term rentals.

The stainless-steel rotary drum is filled via a pneumatic shut-off valve, and the bulk material is heated by the internal IR module. The mixing elements in the rotary drum are adapted to the bulk material, and the drum is emptied by reversing the direction of rotation.

The IR module and its accessories are mounted on a sliding frame that is pulled out for cleaning and maintenance purposes. Russian-gas-supplies – PET-dryer

-Russian gas supplies to EU drop via all routes, except TurkStream

Russian gas supplies have dropped via major routes, including via Ukraine and Belarus and through Nord Stream 1 under the Baltic Sea. The only route unaffected brings gas now exclusively to Russia’s  European friends – Serbia and Hungary.

Gazprom has not booked gas transit capacity for exports via the Yamal-Europe pipeline for August, auction results showed on Monday (18 July).

Russian gas accounts for some 40% in European gas market, while Yamal – Europe pipeline usually accounts for about 15% of Russia’s westbound supply of gas to Europe and Turkey.

Yamal doesn’t run across Ukraine, but across Belarus, to Poland and Germany.

Also, Gazprom has also not booked additional gas transit capacity via the Sudzha crossing point into Ukraine for August, or via Velke Kapusany on the Slovakia-Ukraine border for the same period. Russian-gas-supplies – PET-dryer

Ukraine has remained a major transit route for Russian gas to Europe even after Moscow launched what it calls a “special military operation” in the country on 24 February.

The transit point Ukraine shut usually handles about 8% of Russian gas flows to Europe, although European states said they were still receiving supplies. The Ukraine corridor mostly sends gas to Austria, Italy, Slovakia and other east European states.

‘Force majeure’

According to a letter seen by Reuters on Monday, Gazprom has declared force majeure on gas supplies to Europe to its bigger customer, namely Germany.

The letter said Gazprom, which has a monopoly on Russian gas exports by pipeline, could not fulfil its supply obligations owing to “extraordinary” circumstances outside its control.

It said the force majeure measure, a clause invoked when a business is hit by something beyond its control, was effective from deliveries starting from 14 June.

A trading source quoted by Reuters said the letter concerned supplies through the Nord Stream 1 pipeline, a major supply route to Germany and beyond.
