Enforcement of SASO OXO-Biodegradable Mark for Degradable Plastic Products

SASO OXOBiodegradable Degradable Plastic Products XDS Solutions, IOE&IT corporate member and expert in export certificates of conformity, has received notification from The Saudi Arabian Standards Organization (SASO), that with immediate effect, the list of degradable plastic products required to carry the OXO-Biodegradable Mark has been reduced to 5.  Including one time use plastic bags, and table covers.

All other products, previously included, are on hold until further notice.  This includes bubble wrap (HS Code 39211100) and cling film type products (HS Code 39211300).

This simple regulatory update. Provided by XDS Solutions Technical Manager Martin Churches will help ensure Institute members are prepared.

Which HS Codes need to comply with the SASO OXO-Biodegradable Mark?

The list of 5 products, along with corresponding HS Codes, as provided by SASO is included below:

Martin Churches says: “We are relieved to receive clarification from SASO regarding the proposed regulation.  It means that, for the time being at least, exporters can ship with confidence, certain of which products will be subject to compliance of the SASO technical regulation for degradable plastic products”.

SASO OXO-Biodegradable Mark – Examples to Consider

• Must comply:

A shipment of retail plastic bags.  As the consignment itself carries one of the 5 listed HS Codes then the finished product must carry the SASO OXO-Biodegradable mark to comply.

• Not required to comply:

A computer in a box, wrapped in a plastic packaging.  The consignment itself is not plastic and therefore the shipment is not required to comply.

No need for guess work.  XDS Solutions Account Managers are on hand to provide regulatory clarification and arrange CoC and Oxo-Biodegradable Mark issuance, fast.
