-Versalis to acquire remaining 60% stake in Finproject to become the Italian leader in the production of special polymers

Closing is expected in the fourth quarter of 2021 and follows Versalis’ acquisition of 40% of the company which took place in July 2020. The operation will allow for the development of more specialized products and also those derived from renewable or recycled raw materials.

San Donato Milanese, 22 September 2021 – Versalis has announced that it has exercised the call option to buy the remaining 60% of the shares of the Marche region based industrial group Finproject, an Italian leader in the compounding sector* and in the production of ultralight products, in order to raise its stake to 100%.

The transaction, which will be formally completed with closing expected in the fourth quarter of 2021, follows the initial acquisition of a 40% stake in the company in July 2020 from VEI Capital, and confirms Versalis’ strategy to become the Italian leader in the high performance formulated polymers sector.

Finproject is the leading operator in Italy in the production of cross-linkable and thermoplastic compounds for industrial uses and in the molding of products, in particular for the footwear sector, and of products in the ultralight expanded materials marketed under the XL EXTRALIGHT® brand which, in collaboration with some of the most important brands, are intended for the consumer end market.

-Car parts group Faurecia revises down 2021 targets due to semiconductor shortage

French car parts company Faurecia lowered its main 2021 financial targets on Thursday, saying it was adapting them due to the new forecasts for the global automotive market published last week by information provider IHS Markit.

Faurecia noted IHS Markit now estimated worldwide car production at 72 million vehicles this year versus 76.8 million previously, adding this sharp reduction was primarily attributable to a higher than expected impact from semiconductor shortages.

“Faurecia’s financial guidance for 2021 was explicitly based on the assumption of 76.6 million vehicles produced in the full year”, the company said.

Based on this new assumption of a 72-million global car production, Faurecia now sees full year sales of 15.5 billion euros ($18.2 billion) versus a previous target 16.5 billion.  Special Polymers – Automotive semiconductors

-PET prices in Latin America remain stable

Prices for polyethylene terephthalate (PET) in Latin America remain stable this week amid high prices for preforms in other regions, ICIS reported .

Continuously rising transport costs and higher electricity costs in some countries could lead to price fluctuations in October as negotiations continue.

Demand is volatile as high prices and bad weather restrict business, especially in Mexico. Stocks remain low. Special Polymers – Automotive semiconductors

Asian preform prices remain stable, but buying activity remains low due to high prices in major ports, which are around USD1,600 per tonne.

Market availability of Chinese preforms is declining amid recent declines in plant utilization as the country reduces energy consumption in some regions. Market sources report that more Chinese goods are being sold in bulk rather than in containers, and mainly to South America and Europe.

Offers from South Korea are also present, but most of the volumes are directed to the United States.

Shipping costs remain high, widening the gap between FOB Asian PET prices and CFR prices at a major port in South America.

-Lenzing Celebrates One Year Launch Of Carbon-Zero TENCEL™ Branded Fibers With Expansion To REFIBRA™ Technology

Celebrating the first anniversary of the launch of carbon-zero TENCEL™ branded fibers, the Lenzing Group today announced the expansion of carbon-zero TENCEL™ branded fibers to REFIBRA™ technology to address the growing industry demand around “circular fashion” and carbon neutrality.

The first carbon-zero TENCEL™ branded lyocell and modal fibers, which launched last year, have continued to gain momentum among industry partners including fashion brands and mills. Special Polymers – Automotive semiconductors

Available in September 2021, the expansion aims to provide more innovative solutions for fashion brands to meet carbon reduction targets and consumers to enjoy sustainable products, reinforcing Lenzing’s commitment to achieving net-zero CO2 emissions by 2050.

The expansion demonstrates Lenzing’s solid commitment to building a truly sustainable textile industry, not only through the reduction of carbon footprint, but also via increased circularity through the REFIBRATM technology. This pioneering technology involves upcycling cotton scraps from garment production and transforming them into cotton pulp. The cotton pulp is then added to sustainably sourced wood pulp to produce virgin TENCEL™ Lyocell fibers.

-BASF to boost recycling ops to secure battery materials supplies

German chemicals giant BASF said its burgeoning auto battery recycling activities will see further investments to bolster a scarce stream of supplies of metal ingredients for its battery chemicals business.

The Ludwigshafen, Germany-based company is developing a global production network for cathode materials, the most complex chemical component of an automotive battery, as electric vehicle production surges. Cobalt and nickel are key inputs. Special Polymers – Automotive semiconductors

BASF and China’s Contemporary Amperex Technology (CATL), one of the world’s largest car battery makers, last week struck a partnership https://www.basf.com/global/en/media/news-releases/2021/09/p-21-310.html on battery recycling, among other activities, part of CATL’s move to expand in Europe.

“There is a de facto scarcity of raw materials,” BASF chief technology officer Melanie Maas-Brunner told a media briefing. She added that BASF can only run the cathode business over the longer term “if the raw materials are skilfully kept in a circular movement”.

She said she expects volumes of raw material for cathodes from recycling to surpass those from mining in roughly five to 10 years.

The chemicals group, whose products also include catalytic converters, insulation foams, coatings, vitamins and plastics, will compete in battery recycling mainly with Belgium’s Umicore.

-PP Engineered for Thin-Wall Food Packaging

Specialty polypropylene is optimized for large thin-wall, injection-molded refrigerated food containers.

Strong growth in the thin-wall injection molded (TWIM) packaging industry is being propelled by consumers’ enthusiasm for online grocery shopping and concerns about environmental impacts, together with manufacturers’ efforts to drive down costs. Lightweight, yet strong and stiff TWIM containers effectively protect foods, conserve space during storage and shipping, and reduce raw material usage.

To successfully optimize the performance of TWIM packaging, especially refrigerated containers, Flint Hills Resources, a US polypropylene (PP) manufacturer, developed its new AP5195-LV PP impact copolymer. This product surpasses incumbent PP materials by delivering superior impact strength, high melt flow and good stiffness simultaneously, without traditional trade-offs among these properties. Key to Flint Hills Resources’ achievement is DeltaMax performance modifier from Milliken & Company’s Chemical Business. Special Polymers – Automotive semiconductors

“The balanced performance of Milliken’s additive technology enhances the resin architecture of our new AP5195-LV PP impact copolymer,” said Pierre Donaldson, director of polypropylene R&D for Flint Hills Resources. “By excelling in impact, melt flow and stiffness, our novel PP material can make it easier for converters to produce strong yet lightweight packaging, boost productivity, and reduce energy and plastic use to support environmental efforts.
