LyondellBasell has agreed to sell its Australian polymer business, LyondellBasell Australia (LBA), to Viva Energy, said Chemengonline.
BA’s operations include polymer manufacturing and distribution at Viva’s Geelong refinery near Melbourne.
LBA’s Geelong plant is Australia’s only producer of polypropylene (PP). The refinery provides the propylene feedstock for PP.
“This acquisition is another step in the development of our Geelong Energy Hub and the further diversification of our commercial and industrial businesses,” Scott Wyatt, CEO of Viva Energy, said in announcing the deal this week.
The deal’s financial terms or the expected completion timeline were not disclosed.
As MRC wrote earlier, in July, 2021, Neste and LyondellBasell announced a long-term commercial agreement under which LyondellBasell will source Neste RE, a feedstock from Neste that has been produced from 100% renewable feedstock from bio-based sources, such as waste and residue oils and fats. This feedstock will be processed through the cracker at LyondellBasell’s Wesseling, Germany, plant into polymers and sold under the CirculenRenew brand name. Sustainable-plastics – Circular-Economy

Alterra provides an innovative, patented, thermochemical liquefaction, converting hard-to-recycle plastic into pyrolysis based oil (“PyOil”).

The combination of both companies’ solutions ensures Alterra’s recycled PyOil is drop-in ready feedstock to further accelerate the replacement of hydrocarbon-based oil with recycled feedstock in the production of new plastic-based materials.

Export shipments of refined terephthalic acid (PTA) from China to other global markets rose 32.4 percent in February from the same month a year earlier, ICIS said.
Thus, the export of material from China amounted to 260.35 thousand tons during the reporting period against 196.59 thousand tons in February 2021.

The company recently launched what it says is the world’s first high-performance recycling lyocell Material made from 100 percent textile waste.
Evrnu’s mission dates back to when its co-founder, Stacy Flynn, spent a month in China, where she noticed the impact of toxic sewage from textile factories on local communities. Founded by Flynn and Christopher Stanev, both former employees of well-known textile companies, Evrnu aims to tackle textile waste and pollution at large. With its textile technology system nucyclethe company says it can only make its NuCycl r lyocell fabric with Cotton textile waste as starting material.
The company’s manufacturing process begins with the sorting of textile waste, which is then shredded and finally cleaned. The recycled textile pulp is then converted into a highly durable “R-Lyocell” fiber through a closed-loop process. The final fiber, says Evrnu, is one of superior durability and can replace and even outperform new cellulosic and synthetic fabrics, which make up 90 percent of all current textile fibers.

China’s polypropylene (PP) futures fell 1.5% on April 11, ICIS reported, citing data from the Dalyan Mercantile Exchange (DCE).
Thus, the PP futures for May 2022, the most actively traded on DCE, were at the level of CNY8,594 (USD1,349) per ton on April 11, which is CNY133 per ton below the approval level of the previous trading day.

PP futures in the country declined amid falling crude oil futures and weak demand in the downstream market caused by a rise in covid-19 cases in many cities in the country.
According to the ICIS-MRC Price Review, buying activity on spot last week was low. First, a serious increase in polypropylene prices has limited current purchases by some processors. Second, some sellers limit their PP sales on the spot, including due to preventive shutdowns and reduced load in some industries.
Dow plans to raise polyethylene (PE) prices by 7 cents per pound (USD154 per tonne) in the U.S. and Canada in May, the company said in a letter to its customers.
The letter added that the company will also implement the previously announced price increase of 7 cents per pound in April.
Domestic demand for PE is robust, although logistical difficulties affecting export sellers are leading to an increase in inventory levels.
