These syringes utilize black stoppers made from Teknor Apex’s new medical-grade thermoplastic elastomers.

PAWTUCKET, R.I.—Teknor Apex Co. will introduce new medical-grade thermoplastic elastomers for injection molded plunger stoppers at NPE2018, held May 7-11 in Orlando, Fla.

The firm’s new Medalist compounds are designed to provide improved syringe performance, are less costly and easier to mold than natural and isoprene rubbers. Teknor Apex said they also provide processing advantages compared to thermoplastic vulcanizates.

Stoppers molded using the new Medalist TPEs perform well in both glass and plastic syringe barrels, according to Teknor Apex. They achieve a consistent piston release and travel force thanks to a low coefficient of friction. The compounds eliminate an assembly step because they can be over molded onto plungers.

Teknor added that its Medalist compounds provide substantial advantages over rubber, the predominant material for use in syringe stoppers. TPEs avoid the curing step required in rubber processing, eliminating concerns about extractables and leachables. And their scrap can be recycled, unlike with rubber. TPEs process in considerably shorter molding cycles and lend themselves to more intricate designs and tighter dimensional tolerances.

Teknor Apex produces Medalist compounds in ISO-13485 facilities in the U.S. and Singapore. To learn more visit www.teknorapex.com.
