-Coca-Cola Beverages Collaborates with Namibia Polymer Recyclers to Set up PET Flaking Plant

The two businesses committed to working together by signing Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs), promising to increase the number of women and young people who are gainfully employed in the recycling of plastic waste in addition to accelerating PET collection and recycling nationwide.

In order to establish a plastic recycling facility in Namibia, Coca-Cola Beverages Africa (CCBA) and Namibia Polymer Recyclers (NPR) have signed an investment agreement. The recycling facility will turn used PET flakes, which are valuable on the global market, into plastic beverage bottles.

Post-consumer bottles must be sorted, cleaned, and crushed into PET flakes before being shipped back to South Africa for further processing into recycled PET goods or R-PET material. Tires-from-recycled-bottles – Nonwovens

In line with The Coca-Cola Company’s World Without Waste initiative, this investment will broaden CCBA’s partnerships in Namibia that are centered on the collection of plastic waste. The Coca-Cola Company and all of its bottling partners are setting the standard for the industry by encouraging people to recycle and save one bottle or can for each one they sell by 2030.

“We are working on ways to develop a circular economy that is good for society and profitable for our company. According to Pottie de Bruyn, General Manager of CCBA Namibia, “We’ve set ambitious goals for our business, to take responsibility for our packaging across its lifecycle and reduce plastic waste pollution.

-Genuine multipolar order advocated by BRICS allows greater levels of dialogue to address challenges: former S.African envoy

The 14th BRICS Summit will kick off on Thursday. The Summit will be held in virtual format under the theme of “Foster High-quality BRICS Partnership, Usher in a New Era for Global Development.” When the world is plagued by a pandemic, hunger, war, and division among many others, the BRICS members and a big number of emerging markets and developing countries will jointly demonstrate to the world the BRICS spirit of “openness, inclusiveness, and win-win cooperation.” Tires-from-recycled-bottles – Nonwovens

On the occasion of the Summit, the Global Times interviewed Argentina’s Ambassador to China Sabino Vaca Narvaja and Gert Grobler, a former senior South African diplomat, on the importance they attach to the multilateral mechanism.

BRICS states are bringing economic and political clout to international relations during a period when the old Western-centric world system is under pressure to transform, and China is believed to be a linchpin in a much-needed economic dynamism and a key driver for inclusive global governance, Gert Grobler, a former senior South African diplomat, who served as an ambassador to Spain, Japan, and Madagascar, told the Global Times in a recent exclusive interview.

The BRICS summit is taking place against the background of increasing challenges such as weak global leadership, dismal economic growth, unilateralism, and the fueling of geopolitical tensions which affect world peace and stability, he said. “BRICS, however, has never had the intention to create an exclusive elite group but to jointly harness a common vision and its resources to benefit all its people through concrete mutual cooperation and to actually strengthen international cooperation toward a people-centered, better world.”

Grobler has high expectations over the bloc, reiterating that “the role of BRICS in the global governance system is destined to steadily increase as the countries have transformed a purely economic concept – BRICS – into a new and global governance institution.” Tires-from-recycled-bottles – Nonwovens

“BRICS states bring economic and political clout to international relations during a period when the old Western-centric world system is under pressure to transform,” Grobler said.

At the virtual meeting of BRICS ministers on May 19, member states reiterated their commitment to enhancing and improving global governance by promoting a more agile, effective, efficient, representative, and accountable system; exercising inclusive consultation and collaboration for the benefit of all on the basis of respecting sovereignty, independence, territorial integrity, equality, and the legitimate interests and concerns of different countries.

-Continental tires made from recycled PET bottles available across Europe

German automotive part manufacturer Continental has announced that its tires containing polyester made from recycled PET bottles are now available to all dealers in Europe.

Continental tires use the company’s so-called ContiRe.Tex technology, which can completely replace the conventional polyester in the tire carcass. Unveiled in September 2021 for the first time, the technology uses high-performance polyester yarn, which is obtained from used PET bottles without any intermediate chemical steps and is not recycled in any other way. Tires-from-recycled-bottles – Nonwovens

This makes the technology both eco-friendly and much more efficient than other standard methods for processing PET bottles into high-performance polyester yarns.

The plastic bottles used for the technology come exclusively from regions without a closed recycling loop. As part of a special recycling process, these bottles are sorted and mechanically cleaned after the caps are removed. After mechanical shredding, the PET is further processed into granulate and finally spun polyester yarn.

Continental says a set of standard passenger car tires uses the material from around 40 recycled PET bottles. The Continental tires are reliable and remain dimensionally stable at high temperatures and under high loads.

Recently, the company has been awarded the “Tire Manufacturer of the Year” prize by the international trade magazine Tire Technology International (TTI). Its ContiRe.Tex technology has been in series production since April 2022. Tires-from-recycled-bottles – Nonwovens

Toyota Motor North America (Toyota), as part of its commitment to reduce its environmental footprint year after year and achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, has embarked on a mission to create a sustainable, closed-loop battery ecosystem for its electrified powertrains. This mission focuses not only on the collection, testing and recycling of batteries into raw materials to create a sustainable supply chain, but also aims to develop second-life opportunities for remanufactured and repurposed Toyota hybrid electric vehicle batteries by leveraging battery health screening tools and empowering data from its vehicles.

In connection with these goals, Toyota and Redwood Materials (Redwood) will explore a series of end-of-life battery solutions for Toyota’s proposed battery ecosystem. Initially, this collaboration will focus on the collection, testing and recycling of Toyota hybrid electric vehicle batteries. The companies will then look to expand into other areas such as battery health screening and data management, remanufacturing and battery material supply throughout North America.

“We are excited to be working with Redwood Materials to identify solutions for our electrified powertrains at the end-of-life that contributes to our vision of creating a sustainable, circular battery ecosystem,” said Christopher Yang, group vice president of Business Development at Toyota. “We are committed to developing sustainable solutions that allow our batteries to provide value beyond the initial lifecycle in an electrified vehicle. This also contributes to our carbon neutrality goals and our mission to build a more sustainable world for all.”  Tires-from-recycled-bottles – Nonwovens

Redwood Materials is driving down the environmental footprint and cost of lithium-ion batteries by offering large-scale sources of domestic anode and cathode materials produced from recycled batteries. Redwood receives more than ~6 GWh of end-of-life batteries annually for recycling, which are then refined and remanufactured into critical battery materials.
