Trinseo has recently launched a chemical recycling demonstration plant in Rho, just outside Milan Italy
This facility, focusing on the depolymerization of polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) waste and scraps, was inaugurated in the presence of local officials. The announcement for this plant came at the end of the previous year, highlighting a significant development since Trinseo’s expansion in 2021 through the acquisition of methyl methacrylate (MMA) and PMMA activities from Arkema. The innovative recycling unit transforms PMMA waste back into its original monomer, MMA. This substance can then be reprocessed into new PMMA without losing the material’s inherent mechanical and optical qualities. The recycled MMA is suitable for use in manufacturing compounds or extruding various sheets.
This depolymerization process was originally developed as part of the European MMAtwo project, which began in 2018. The project was led by Dutch PMMA recycling specialist Heathland, which Trinseo later acquired. This step represents a move towards more sustainable practices within the industry, aiming to reduce waste and encourage the reuse of materials in a way that maintains product integrity. PET Prices
