-Sustainable nonwoven solutions from automotive to wipes

At this year’s IDEA show in Miami, FL/USA, from March 28-31, 2022, nonwovens producer Sandler will highlight innovations that combine function and conservation of resources. Automotive-non-woven-recycling – Packaging

In hygiene applications, new nonwovens for acquisition and distribution layers (ADL) put sustainability concepts into practice. The next generation ADL from Sandler AG, Schwarzenbach/Germany, brings together the functionalities of the ADL and the core cover in a single-layer material. The new fluid handling concept gets rid of any gaps between functional layers and the absorbent core, meaning optimum fluid management is ensured. Owing to an exclusively mechanical production process these nonwovens can do entirely without thermoplastic polymers in raw material selection. Material composition and properties can be adapted to the respective features of the end product.

An innovative manufacturing process for wipes lowers energy consumption and use of resources by up to 50% compared with common production methods. The nonwovens feature similar or even improved softness as well as higher thickness at similar basis weights and bonding levels. For this new development, a wide variety of natural fibers or fibers based on renewable sources can be used and tailored to customer wishes and requirements of the end application.

In the field of nonwovens in technical applications is a sustainable new development for the automotive industry. In this sector, single-material solutions are currently also expanded to so-called molded exterior parts, e.g. underside panels, engine compartment shielding, and damping trays. Innovative nonwovens made from 100% PET offers a sustainable alternative for these applications. No binders are used, nor additional fibers often used to reinforce this type of components, thereby significantly reducing the weight of the material. Their porous structure makes these nonwovens very good sound absorbers, increasing the driving comfort of the vehicle. By customizing the fiber structure and the 3D shape of the component, performance can be further optimized to specific applications.

The textile materials are also not susceptible to mold and fungi, and are extremely resistant to all common engine compartment fluids. Automotive-non-woven-recycling – Packaging

-Andritz to supply spunlace line to Uzbekistan

International technology group Andritz has received an order from the Uzbek cotton spinning specialist Texygen Textile LLC to supply a complete neXline spunlace line. Start-up is scheduled for the first quarter of 2023.

This will be the first spunlace line ever installed in Uzbekistan. The equipment will process high-quality cotton fibers in a fully integrated production line, from bleaching to winding. With this new line, Texygen Textile says it will be able to produce high-quality spunlace wipes made of 100 per cent cotton, therefore opening up new market opportunities. Rasulov Ikrom, owner of Texygen Textile, said that the Andritz equipment will minimize fibre loss and enable the company to produce a high-end spunlace fabric that will allow the company to serve the international medical industry with premium-quality spunlace wipes. “We are very proud to be a pioneer in the spunlace industry in our country. We have commissioned Andritz to supply our first spunlace line, and their know-how relating to the carding machine, among other units, will enable us to produce premium-quality, nonwoven cotton roll goods.” Flexible-packaging-sorting – Spunlace

Plastic is a functional, long-lasting, adaptable, and versatile material, and so far, even cheap. In its little more than a century of history since it was first synthesized in 1907 by the Belgian chemist Leo Baekeland, it has played a role in the rapid social, industrial, and technological development that has brought us to the present day. However, its meteoric expansion as a material in this period, which has come to be baptized as ‘the age of plastic’, has made it necessary to establish strategies for its management as waste, especially when it comes to single-use plastic objects or packaging.Automotive-non-woven-recycling – Packaging

The figures shared by the European Commission confirm this need. Every year, Europeans generate 25 million tons of plastic waste, but less than 30% is collected for recycling. 80-85% of marine litter on European beaches is plastic and, of this, 50% is single-use plastic (it is worth recalling that there is a mass of 80,000 tons of plastic three times the size of France floating in the Pacific). This results in massive collateral losses for European sectors as diverse as tourism and fishing.

For this reason, legislation is being adopted throughout Europe to face this great challenge. In Spain, the regulations governing single-use plastic objects are already in place, and at the beginning of next year the new Royal Decree on Packaging and Packaging Waste, which is currently being processed, will come into force, while research centers are working hard to develop alternatives to replace the material.

“In this sense, legislation is moving faster than the technical side,” says Luis Gil, packaging specialist at AINIA. “Laws set a pyramid of priorities for the management of packaging waste. The number one priority is to prevent the waste from being produced, but once we cannot prevent it, we have to opt for reuse, recycling, and, finally, recovery. The fruit and vegetable sector has been working for a long time on sustainability in packaging and leads by example when it comes to reusing, with the use of wooden or high-density polyethylene crates for transport and even for the distribution of fruit and vegetables.” Automotive-non-woven-recycling – Packaging
