Many believe what we recycle just ends up in general waste
95 per cent of people put plastic bottles, tins, glass, or cardboard out for recycling each week, but more than a third are concerned their recycling ends up with the general waste anyway once taken away.
Although most of the public works hard to ensure they’re as green as possible, 25 per cent admitted they would do more if they understood the recycling messaging on products better, with 15 per cent claiming they don’t feel educated enough on recycling.
Asia’s benzene market was bolstered by firm crude oil futures, following US offshore production shutdowns from Hurricane Sally.
Spot benzene prices rose above $415/tonne FOB (free on board) Korea, after receiving a shot in the arm from buoyant crude, from around $406.5/tonne FOB Korea in the first half of the week. Petrochemicals PETBottles Hydrogen
Brent crude futures topped $42/bbl, after slipping under $40/bbl recently, as US crude stocks declined.
The uptick in benzene prices, however, appeared to be still tempered by ample availability in Asia.
“The market is slightly firmer, the crude oil impact is not very significant yet,” said a supplier in Thailand.
Inflation in the eurozone was at -0.2% in August, down from 0.4% in July, following a fall in energy and industrial goods prices, the EU’s statistical office Eurostat said on Thursday.
Except for France, inflation in all the other major economies in the 19-country currency union was in the negative. Petrochemicals PETBottles Hydrogen
In addition to eurozone recession concerns, core inflation – which excludes volatile energy prices – also fell in August.
The European Central Bank (ECB)’s target for inflation is to keep it close to, but below, 2%.
A negative inflation rate may reinforce suggestions that the central bank will need more economic stimulus later in the year to prop up prices.
Axens says it will license its alpha-olefins production technology to Baltic Chemical Plant LLC (BCP LLC), a subsidiary of RusGazDobycha (Moscow, Russia), for its gas-based petrochemical project at Ust-Luga, near St. Petersburg, Russia, said Chemweek.
Axens will supply its AlphaButol technology for the production of high-purity butene-1 by ethylene dimerization, and its AlphaHexol process to produce high-purity 1-hexene through ethylene trimerization. Both products are used as comonomers in the production of various grades of polyethylene (PE), including linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) and high-density polyethylene (HDPE). Butene-1 will be produced at two 60,000-metric tons/year units at the petchems complex, while 1-hexene will be produced at a single 50,000-metric tons/year plant on the same site. The agreement includes the transfer of the license, the process book, a number of chemicals such as catalysts and adsorbents, and proprietary equipment, says Axens. It will also provide training to the customer’s employees, plus technical support, it says.
PakTech announces participation in the U.S. Plastics Pact, a multi-sector public-private collaborative aimed at creating a circular economy for plastics in the U.S. As one of the founding organizations, PakTech is at the forefront of creating a solutions-driven system to better reduce, reuse, and recycle plastics. Our aim is to create a more efficient and just economy that keeps plastic in the economy and out of the environment.
The U.S. Plastics Pact is led by The Recycling Partnership and World Wildlife Fund (WWF), as part of the Ellen MacArthur Foundation’s global Plastics Pact network. The U.S. joins similar pacts in Europe, Latin America, and Africa, which unites over 850 global organizations with the shared goal of taking meaningful, measurable, and actionable steps toward creating a sustainable economy for plastic. European supply of butanediol (BDO) has tightened, though sources’ views remain mixed on the extent of supply limitations in the market.
Increased demand, a production issue causing reduced rates for major producer INEOS during September and limited availability from Asia have resulted in lower availability of BDO. Petrochemicals PETBottles Hydrogen
Sources also referred to increases in spot pricing due to this change in fundamentals.
European supply of BDO has rebalanced, though some sellers see restrictions on availability.
One producer said that it had been approached by multiple customers looking for spot volumes due to tight market conditions, while another said that it would be difficult for a consumer to secure larger volumes of BDO in the current situation.
Buyers agreed that availability of material has reduced compared to recent weeks but said that supply continues to be ample.
On 15.09.2020, the Fuel Cells and Hydrogen Observatory (FCHO) online launch event took place with around 1000 participants from European and national institutions, industry and associations from around the world. Petrochemicals PETBottles Hydrogen
The Fuel Cell Hydrogen Observatory (FCHO) provides data and up to date information about the entire hydrogen sector. It focuses on technology and market statistics, socio-economic indicators, policy and regulation, as well as financial support.
Fuel cells and hydrogen technologies are now seen as a firm part of public strategies to drive the climate-neutral revolution envisaged in the European Green Deal and to decarbonise the economy. The arising interest in fuel cells and hydrogen technologies requested filling knowledge gaps and providing analysis covering the entire value chain. The FCHO provides rich synthesis and data interpretation of all hydrogen industry and it is designed to engage directly with policy-makers and experts, industry players and investors, as well as the general public.
Carbon fiber continues to grow in popularity as an alternative to steel-reinforced concrete bridges, and a recent report indicates the material can stand up to years of harsh weather.
Lawrence Technological University tested carbon fiber reinforced polymer components for four years to determine how well they would endure the Michigan’s harsh weather and other conditions. Petrochemicals PETBottles Hydrogen
The ensuing report for the Michigan Department of Transportation was named one of the top 16 research projects in 2020 by the Research Advisory Committee at the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials.
“Investigators found that CFRP strands held up well to conditions that simulated Michigan’s harsh weather,” says an MDOT news release. “Moisture, rain, freezing rain and extreme temperature swings did not significantly affect the material’s strength or mechanical properties over time. In addition, test results showed that some currently accepted parameters for CFRP are conservative and can be updated.”
Belgian textile innovator Devan Chemicals has been lauded by Frost & Sullivan for its antimicrobial technology, known under its trade name as BI-OME. The non-leaching attributes of the technology coupled with its ability to reduce microbial mutation make it a potential candidate for textiles where durability and safe human contact are highly valued.
Based on its recent analysis of the European antimicrobial technology for the textile market, Frost & Sullivan has recognized the Belgium-headquartered Devan, with the 2020 European Technology Innovation Leadership Award. Devan’s highly relevant antimicrobial technology addresses issues concerning the contamination of PPE and textiles, including the spread of drug-resistant bacteria, viral transmissions, and hospital-acquired infections (HAIs). ALPLA has acquired a property in Toluca, capital city of the State of México in the country’s centre.
Construction of a state-of-the-art recycling plant will commence on it in autumn 2020, with its launch planned for the second half of 2021.
The amount invested is roughly 15 million euros and 65 jobs will be created.
The company will be run as a 100-per-cent subsidiary of ALPLA, while the facility will have an annual capacity of 15,000 tonnes of HDPE recycled material for non-food applications, for example for packaging solutions for personal care or household cleaning products. The target markets are primarily Mexico, neighbouring countries in Central America and the United States. Petrochemicals PETBottles Hydrogen
The company believes by making this investment, ALPLA is realising its global objectives for the New Plastics Economy (an initiative of the Ellen MacArthur Foundation).
