-Busting recycling myths as third think it’s a waste of time
Many believe what we recycle just ends up in general waste
95 per cent of people put plastic bottles, tins, glass, or cardboard out for recycling each week, but more than a third are concerned their recycling ends up with the general waste anyway once taken away.
Although most of the public works hard to ensure they’re as green as possible, 25 per cent admitted they would do more if they understood the recycling messaging on products better, with 15 per cent claiming they don’t feel educated enough on recycling.
-Asia benzene buoyed by firm crude; arbitrage window to US still shut
Asia’s benzene market was bolstered by firm crude oil futures, following US offshore production shutdowns from Hurricane Sally.

Brent crude futures topped $42/bbl, after slipping under $40/bbl recently, as US crude stocks declined.
The uptick in benzene prices, however, appeared to be still tempered by ample availability in Asia.
“The market is slightly firmer, the crude oil impact is not very significant yet,” said a supplier in Thailand.
-Eurozone inflation turns negative in August on energy, industrial goods
Inflation in the eurozone was at -0.2% in August, down from 0.4% in July, following a fall in energy and industrial goods prices, the EU’s statistical office Eurostat said on Thursday.

In addition to eurozone recession concerns, core inflation – which excludes volatile energy prices – also fell in August.
The European Central Bank (ECB)’s target for inflation is to keep it close to, but below, 2%.
A negative inflation rate may reinforce suggestions that the central bank will need more economic stimulus later in the year to prop up prices.
-Axens to license alpha-olefins technology for Baltic chemical complex in Russia
Axens says it will license its alpha-olefins production technology to Baltic Chemical Plant LLC (BCP LLC), a subsidiary of RusGazDobycha (Moscow, Russia), for its gas-based petrochemical project at Ust-Luga, near St. Petersburg, Russia, said Chemweek.
Axens will supply its AlphaButol technology for the production of high-purity butene-1 by ethylene dimerization, and its AlphaHexol process to produce high-purity 1-hexene through ethylene trimerization. Both products are used as comonomers in the production of various grades of polyethylene (PE), including linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) and high-density polyethylene (HDPE). Butene-1 will be produced at two 60,000-metric tons/year units at the petchems complex, while 1-hexene will be produced at a single 50,000-metric tons/year plant on the same site. The agreement includes the transfer of the license, the process book, a number of chemicals such as catalysts and adsorbents, and proprietary equipment, says Axens. It will also provide training to the customer’s employees, plus technical support, it says.

-Europe BDO supply tightens as demand from automotive rises
European supply of butanediol (BDO) has tightened, though sources’ views remain mixed on the extent of supply limitations in the market.
Increased demand, a production issue causing reduced rates for major producer INEOS during September and limited availability from Asia have resulted in lower availability of BDO. Petrochemicals PETBottles Hydrogen
Sources also referred to increases in spot pricing due to this change in fundamentals.
REBALANCED SUPPLY
European supply of BDO has rebalanced, though some sellers see restrictions on availability.
One producer said that it had been approached by multiple customers looking for spot volumes due to tight market conditions, while another said that it would be difficult for a consumer to secure larger volumes of BDO in the current situation.
Buyers agreed that availability of material has reduced compared to recent weeks but said that supply continues to be ample.

-Michigan expands use of carbon fiber as alternative bridge material

The ensuing report for the Michigan Department of Transportation was named one of the top 16 research projects in 2020 by the Research Advisory Committee at the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials.
“Investigators found that CFRP strands held up well to conditions that simulated Michigan’s harsh weather,” says an MDOT news release. “Moisture, rain, freezing rain and extreme temperature swings did not significantly affect the material’s strength or mechanical properties over time. In addition, test results showed that some currently accepted parameters for CFRP are conservative and can be updated.”

-ALPLA builds new HDPE recycling plant in Mexico
ALPLA has acquired a property in Toluca, capital city of the State of México in the country’s centre.
Construction of a state-of-the-art recycling plant will commence on it in autumn 2020, with its launch planned for the second half of 2021.
The amount invested is roughly 15 million euros and 65 jobs will be created.
The company will be run as a 100-per-cent subsidiary of ALPLA, while the facility will have an annual capacity of 15,000 tonnes of HDPE recycled material for non-food applications, for example for packaging solutions for personal care or household cleaning products.
