Revolutionary PA6 Automotive Recycling Triumphs in Award-Winning Industry Trial

How Advanced PA6 Automotive Recycling Is Unlocking Closed-Loop Car Manufacturing

The transition toward a sustainable circular economy in vehicle manufacturing has long hit a roadblock when dealing with high-performance engineering plastics. While metals are readily recovered from scrap vehicles, structural polymers like Polyamide 6 (PA6)—widely relied upon for their extreme heat tolerance, mechanical strength, and chemical resistance—have historically proven resistant to high-grade recycling. Standard mechanical recycling methods deteriorate polymer chains, degrade added fibers, and suffer from contamination, making the resulting material unsuitable for critical auto parts.

This barrier is beginning to dissolve. A collaborative consortium featuring chemical producer BASF alongside industry partners Mercedes-Benz, ZF Group, and Pöppelmann K-Tech has successfully demonstrated two distinct advanced recycling pathways for PA6. By processing post-consumer waste from end-of-life vehicles (ELVs) back into near-production automotive components, the initiative secured major industry recognition: winning the Materialica Award 2026 in the CO2 Efficiency category and taking second place in the Sustainability category at the Fakuma Innovation Award 2026.

The Push of the EU End-of-Life Vehicles Regulation (ELVR)

The impetus behind these technological breakthroughs goes beyond internal corporate sustainability commitments. European auto manufacturers face regulatory deadlines under the proposed European End-of-Life Vehicles Regulation (ELVR). PA6 automotive recycling

The regulatory framework introduces strict mandates requiring higher plastic recovery rates from scrapped cars and explicitly setting targets for closed-loop content—meaning recycled plastics must be incorporated directly back into new vehicles.

Because high-stress vehicle parts are subject to strict structural standards, automakers cannot simply substitute lower-grade recycled plastics into safety-critical environments. The success of closed-loop initiatives hinges on chemical and solvent technologies capable of delivering virgin-grade performance directly out of post-consumer waste.  PA6 automotive recycling

Route 1: Chemical Depolymerization for Heavily Contaminated Components

The first pathway developed by BASF explores chemical depolymerization, targeted specifically at heavily soiled engine components like used transmission oil pans.

  1. Monomer Recovery: Contaminated PA6 waste is chemically broken down into its original building block, the monomer caprolactam.

  2. Purification & Repolymerization: The recovered caprolactam undergoes thorough purification before being repolymerized back into fresh PA6. The resulting resin matches the chemical purity and structural integrity of virgin fossil-based material. PA6 automotive recycling

  3. Component Validation: In partnership with ZF Group, the repolymerized material was formulated into a glass fiber-reinforced PA6 compound. ZF molded this compound into a functional stabilizer link for Mercedes-Benz.

Under rigorous test conditions, the recycled stabilizer link passed all mechanical, thermal, and stress requirements while exhibiting processing behavior identical to prime material.

Route 2: Solvent-Based Extraction from Complex Mixed Shredder Waste

While depolymerization targets single-polymer parts, the second pathway tackles Automotive Shredder Residue (ASR)—the heterogeneous waste stream left behind after metals and large pieces are extracted during vehicle demolition. ASR consists of mixed plastics, rubbers, foams, and coatings, which makes traditional sorting nearly impossible.  PA6 automotive recycling

Through selective solvent extraction, BASF separated PA6 and PA66 from the ASR fraction, isolating clean PA6. Pöppelmann K-Tech then processed this material into an engine chain guide rail for Mercedes-Benz—a component exposed to high wear, elevated temperatures, and aggressive chemical media throughout its service life.  PA6 automotive recycling

Environmental Benefits and Scale-Up Challenges

Initial Life Cycle Assessments (LCAs) conducted on these pilot processes reveal a significantly reduced Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) compared to conventional virgin polyamide production. By diverting hard-to-recycle automotive waste from landfills and incinerators, closed-loop processing preserves raw fossil materials and cuts greenhouse gas emissions. PA6 automotive recycling

Navigating the Road to Industrialization

Despite these technical successes, BASF and its partners emphasize that these trials were executed under pilot-scale conditions. Scaling up to industrial production volume requires overcoming key economic and operational obstacles:

  • Feedstock Logistics: Establishing reliable collection, sorting, and pre-processing infrastructure for end-of-life vehicle plastics across regional markets.  PA6 automotive recycling

  • Process Economics: Balancing energy consumption and solvent recovery costs to remain cost-competitive with prime virgin polymers.

  • Commercialization Flexibility: BASF has noted that while it helped develop the solvent-based recovery route, the commercial implementation at full scale could ultimately be driven by other market entities and recyclers.

The Path Ahead for Automotive Polymers

The pilot trials validated by Mercedes-Benz, ZF, Pöppelmann K-Tech, and BASF prove that high-performance engineering plastics do not have to end up downcycled or incinerated at the end of a vehicle’s life.

By deploying complementary depolymerization and solvent-extraction technologies, the automotive industry gains a practical, scalable roadmap toward circular manufacturing—meeting strict European environmental standards without compromising safety, durability, or vehicle performance.  PA6 automotive recycling
