-Ascend Elements’ battery recycling process recovers over 99.9 percent pure graphite from EV batteries

Ascend Elements and Koura, an Orbia business, have launched a proprietary process technology yielding battery-grade graphite material from spent lithium-ion batteries. Orbia is serving as a development partner to Ascend Elements to scale the company’s technology for commercial production. Orbia has also backed the company through several investment rounds.

With sales of plug-in electric vehicles expected to grow at a 30 percent compound annual rate through 2030, Ascend Elements’ technology is welcome in the battery recycling and sustainable materials spaces. With consistent yields of over 99.9 percent pure graphite and with energy capacity and cycle life on par with virgin battery-grade graphite anode material, Ascend Elements’ Hydro-to-Anode process technology has the additional benefit of extending recycling and manufacturing throughput beyond cathode active materials to anode materials as well. This technology increases the value of lithium-ion batteries recycled using the Ascend Elements process.  Battery-recycling – Plastics-Recycling – Ukraine

“With this advancement, we just made the case for battery recycling a lot more compelling. Increasing the value of the extracted materials improves the economics of recycling, which creates an incentive for even more recycling,” said Michael O’Kronley, Chief Executive Officer of Ascend Elements. “The ability to recover graphite for use in batteries helps solve another critical material challenge in the battery supply chain and minimizes the need for mining new materials.”

“Orbia is committed to developing and deploying sustainable solutions across all our business in pursuit of our purpose of advancing life around the world,” says Sameer Bharadwaj, CEO of Orbia. Bharadwaj continued, “Ascend Elements is a perfect development partner for our Koura business given our focus on renewable technologies and the incredible material opportunities in the lithium-ion battery space.”  Battery-recycling – Plastics-Recycling – Ukraine

-Republic Services Aims for Vertical Integration with Planned Plastics Recycling Facility

The company’s Polymer Center will supply recycled PET flake as well as HDPE and PP to consumer packaging brands to meet their sustainability goals.

Development plans for an integrated plastics recycling facility are underway at major hauler and recycler Phoenix-based Republic Services, Inc. The new Republic Services Polymer Center, scheduled to open in 2023, is said to represent the first time a U.S. company will manage the plastics stream through an integrated process from curbside collection of recycled material to production and delivery of high-quality recycled content for consumer packaging. The company’s first Polymer Center will process plastics– from Republic’s recycling facilities in the West, where legislation is driving increased demand for recycled content. The move  directly supports Republic’s long-term sustainability goal to increase the recovery and circularity of key materials by 40% by 2030, and will help consumer packaged goods (CPG) brands meet their own sustainability goals.

Rigid plastics collected from residential and commercial customers and sorted at local recycling facilities will be delivered to the Polymer Center for processing, including shredding and hot washing or sorting by color. The facility is expected to produce more than 100 million lb/yr of recycled plastics, including 100% PCR PET flake delivered to the food-grade marketplace to enable bottle-to-bottle circularity. In addition, HDPE and PP packaging such as detergent jugs, which today are collected in multicolored bundles, can be separated by plastic type and color, allowing, for example, an orange jug to be recycled into another orange jug.

Battery-recycling - Plastics-Recycling - Ukraine-Polyester products whole line in loss, why PET bottle chip still lucrative ?

Recently, crude oil futures continuously hit the all-time high, and the benefits of major polyester products have been significantly compressed after a sharp rise in raw material costs, and even losses have occurred. However, among the many polyester products, the processing spread of PET bottle chip is still good. So what are the reasons for the good benefits of PET bottle chip? Battery-recycling – Plastics-Recycling – Ukraine

Basis trading mode like futures

First of all, the sales model of PET bottle chip is slightly different from that of other polyester products. Compared with PFY and PET fiber chip, PET bottle chip is mostly sold in advance, and customers basically only need to pay 10% deposit in advance. Due to the large downstream consumption volume, bottle chip factories typically need to take in orders 1-2 months in advance in order to better arrange the delivery rhythm. In this way, in fact, both buyers and sellers can judge whether it is a buying point or a selling point based on the raw material futures trend. At the same time, some manufacturer has also tried out basis trading in the past two years, that is, a monthly premium or discount on the basis of the benchmark price. The suppliers lock the cost of raw materials as they sell, and the buyers can also prepare the goods in advance according to his own judgment on the market. Therefore, as long as the PET bottle chip producer is not too aggressive, breakeven processing spread can at least be guaranteed. In addition, after determining the quantity and price in the early stage, it is easier for the bottle chip manufacturer to adjust its raw material purchasing rhythm and bottle chip sales strategy in the later stage.

So far, most of the mainstream bottle chip manufacturers are already selling orders for May to August in China, and only some of them are still selling spot orders for March to April, while overseas exports are basically talking about the shipping date from May to July. Therefore, the recent rise in crude oil may be beneficial to bottle chip factories to take in orders over a period of time. In the long run, high costs are certainly not a good thing for the industry. Battery-recycling – Plastics-Recycling – Ukraine

The company that launched the first demonstration plant in the Netherlands for the physical recycling of demolition polystyrene waste last June, went bankrupt
On March 8, the Dutch company Polystyrene Loop BV filed for bankruptcy. The reasons – explains the same company in a note – are linked to the delays in starting the demonstration plant, aggravated by unforeseen events such as the pandemic crisis and the recent surge in energy costs. PolystyreneLoop had inaugurated last June in Terneuzen, in the Netherlands, the demonstration plant for the physical recycling, by dissolving in solvent, of polystyrene coming from insulating sheets for building (XPS and EPS), with an initial treatment capacity of up to 3 thousand tons per year of styrene based waste
The project was initiated by the PolystyreneLoop Coöperatief consortium, made up of over 70 members from 18 European countries active in the entire polystyrene supply chain, interested in reusing the regenerated material to produce new XPS and EPS insulating sheets.
The physical recycling process would have made it possible to recover both the polystyrene contained in the waste of insulating materials based on XPS and EPS, and the bromine contained in the flame retardants based on hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD). Battery-recycling – Plastics-Recycling – Ukraine
