-Turkish association urges buyers to stop purchasing virgin raw materials

“Speculative” current prices have been inflated via artificial supply restrictions by petrochemical companies, warns PAGEV

The Turkish plastics industry association PAGEV has called for the removal of import duties and protectionist measures on plastics raw material imports, after pointing to a suspicious wave of closures by the global petrochemical industry that has ruined the supply and demand balance. Generalnews PA6Recycling Hydrogen

As of November 2020, petrochemical companies around the world have cut production and reduced the supply of raw materials under various pretexts, allowing prices to rise rapidly and giving the suspicion of an OPEC-like Cartel arrangement.

In a press statement, PAGEV said that the profitability of cartel-like conduct, coupled with supply chain disruptions, logistics issues, and most importantly the reluctance of governments to intervene due to the fragility of the global economy because of the pandemic, encourages some companies to continue these practices.

-Formosa increases April PE prices in the US by USD88 per tonne

Formosa Plastics Corporation USA, a subsidiary of a major global petrochemical producer Formosa Petrochemical, announced an increase in the price of polyethylene (PE) of all Formolene grades for deliveries in April this year, the company said in a letter to its customers.  Generalnews PA6Recycling Hydrogen

Thus, the increase in April prices for the company’s PE will be 9 cents per pound (USD198 per ton) and will come into force on April 1, 2021.

The supply of PE to the United States was limited prior to the mid-February winter storm off the US Gulf Coast, which caused at least temporary disruptions to most of the PE manufacturing facilities in the country.

These factories have gradually returned to service over the past few weeks, but production losses have significantly reduced the supply of already small batches of material.

-Proposed plastic packaging tax ‘falls short’ says TIPA

Sustainable alternatives to conventional plastic should be exempt from the UK’s new plastic packaging tax, according to a flexible compostable packaging producer.

Writing to the UK Treasury, TIPA said: “Traditional recycling alone is failing to deal with the millions of tonnes of plastic detritus on our planet and there is no foreseeable change to this without systematic change in the materials we employ, including compostables.”  Generalnews PA6Recycling Hydrogen

The company’s call for action was backed by the Bio-based and Biodegradable Industries Association (BBIA), a UK trade body, and came as the government’s Plastic Packaging Tax consultation closes.
