-Biopolymers firm Avantium boosted by new offtake contracts

Avantium has secured two new offtake contracts in a boost to its planned building of a new plant in the Netherlands.

The Dutch firm has now secured conditional offtake agreements with four companies – speciality chemicals business Toyobo, polyester film producer Terphane, beverage bottling company Refresco, and an unnamed global brand owner.

The contracts are for the supply of polyethylene furanoate (PEF) resin for bottles and films.

With the addition of the two new contracts, Avantium said its Renewable Polymers (RNP) business has made progress towards a Final Investment Decision (FID) over the construction of the planned furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) plant in the town of Delfzijl.

The company has also signed a collaboration agreement with brewer Carlsberg to jointly develop several PEF applications, including its Green Fibre Bottle, which uses a PEF polymer film barrier.

-US plastics association not in favour of pollution act

US-based Plastics Industry Association (PLASTICS) has voiced its strong opposition to the Break Free From Plastic Pollution Act, introduced in the US House of Representatives and US Senate. It says the act places the over US$7 billion capital expenditure spending in plastics material and resin manufacturing in “serious jeopardy”.

The plastics industry is one of America’s largest and is critical to the overall performance of America’s economy. Most plastics are used in manufacturing, although the use of plastics in services, such as healthcare, is becoming increasingly important. The “Break Free Act” would destroy manufacturing jobs and put America’s supply chains into chaos.  Petrochemicals PA6Recycling Hydrogen

“This legislation would be absolutely devastating to manufacturing jobs and America’s overall economy just as we begin to rebound from the effects of Covid-19,” said PLASTICS President/CEO Tony Radoszewski. “This bill is a direct threat to the nearly one million men and women who work in the domestic plastics industry. Additionally, this misguided legislation could have the unintended consequence of leading to an increase in greenhouse gas emissions.”

-Faerch promises PCR transparency

In what it calls an industry-first, Faerch can now provide third party-approved certificates on the share of post-consumer recycled content (PCR) in its PET food packaging solutions. Customers can gain full transparency for their products on individual recipe level, while PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) audits the statements.

“The amount of recycled post-consumer content in food packaging is a key indicator for sustainability,” said Spencer Johnston, chief executive of Faerch UK. “Consumers and legislators expect full transparency. With our audited certification we eliminate any uncertainty and doubt.  Petrochemicals PA6Recycling Hydrogen

“We apply the strictest calculation method and use post-consumer content based on an ISO definition as the basis for certification. We very much encourage decision makers in the industry to focus on maximising post-consumer content in contrast to post-industrial material, which is frequently referred to, but in fact comprises of industrial by-products or virgin regrind that has never been in the hands of a consumer.”

-New Package Concept Offers Relief from PP Shortages & Soaring Prices

A new IML approach that uses a thick paper label as most of the structure of a plastic container can slash resin use drastically—especially handy when resin supplies are tight and prices are soaring. Petrochemicals PA6Recycling Hydrogen

With Gulf Coast chemicals and plastics production disrupted by winter storms, resulting in tight availability and galloping price increases for PP and other resins, this might be a perfect time to consider a new injection molded package concept that can reduce plastic usage by up to 76%. As reported in Feb. ’20 Starting Up, the concept was introduced publicly at the K 2019 fair in Düsseldorf by Swiss-based Muller Group, specialists in molds and automation for thin-wall packaging and in-mold labeling (IML). Working with Artaplast of Sweden, Muller developed mold and IML automation technology for replacing up to 76% of the PP in a dairy cup with a thin skeleton injection molded over a thick paper IML label coated on both sides with PP. Artaplast calls the concept Fiber Cup and has applied it to cottage cheese and yogurt containers in Europe.

-BASF’s engagement for the responsible use of plastics

With its broad portfolio and strong capabilities in research and development, BASF offers high-value products and solutions for various applications and constantly works on increasing the sustainability of its products.

For example, our plastic materials are used in health, automotive, construction and consumer industries contributing to a reduction in CO2 emissions through light-weighting (i.e., less fuel consumption) and insulation (i.e., less heating) or extended life of packed goods (i.e., less food waste).  Petrochemicals PA6Recycling Hydrogen

Examples include high-performance fossil, bio-based, biomass-balanced and certified compostable products helping to address diverse societal needs and sustainability goals.

Plastics is an important material class providing many benefits for our society and should be part of the future if we want to reduce our climate footprint.

For many applications, plastics help to increase efficiency by saving resources in production and use phases.

Over the life of a product, plastics used in buildings, vehicles, packaging or electrical appliances save far more resources than were needed to produce them in the first place.

-Electrolux eyes increased recycled-content plastic

Appliance maker’s sustainability report points to 50 percent recycled content by 2030.  Petrochemicals PA6Recycling Hydrogen

Sweden-based household appliance maker Electrolux AB, in its most recent sustainability report, says it has set as a goal that by 2030 its product ranges will contain at least 50 percent recycled materials.

The company does not mention to what extent recycled-content metals will play a role but writes in more depth about its incorporation of recycled-content plastics.

Electrolux says it used 6,800 metric tons of recycled plastic in its products in 2020 and indicates it is aiming much higher.

-India levies anti-dumping duty on bottle-grade PET from China

India has imposed anti-dumping duty on Chinese bottle-grade PET (polyethylene terephthalate) resin—used to make bottles and jars for mineral water, carbonated soft drinks and pharmaceutical products among other goods—to offset the damage to the domestic industry.  Petrochemicals PA6Recycling Hydrogen

After a year-long investigation, the Directorate General of Trade Remedies (DGTR) in December 2020 recommended imposing anti-dumping duty on the PET resin imported from China, ranging from $60.92 to $200.66, depending on quality.

-Business Is Booming in China . . . Again

China saw 2.1% growth in 2020, an amazing accomplishment given that the economy was shut down for nearly six months. And this year, the World Bank projects 7.9% growth for the “world’s factory.”  Petrochemicals PA6Recycling Hydrogen

Thanks to a successful COVID-19 containment policy, China has emerged from the pandemic largely unscathed. Consumer spending, infrastructure, factory production, and private investment all experienced major upswings in the second half of last year. As a result, China saw 2.1% growth in 2020, an almost unbelievable feat given an economy that was shut down for nearly six months.

Add President Biden’s willingness to at least restart talks with China, the recently signed EU-China trade agreement, and the lifting of COVID lockdown orders throughout the United States, and it certainly appears that China, the United States, and the world are heading in the right direction.

-This New Recycling Plant Uses Steam to Recycle ‘Unrecyclable’ Plastic

A new recycling plant is designed to process hard-to-recycle plastic using what’s called supercritical steam—water heated to a high temperature and pressure—as molecular scissors, breaking down chemical bonds in plastic to create building blocks that can be used to make new plastic.  Petrochemicals PA6Recycling Hydrogen

The process works on any type of plastic, including packaging with multiple layers that normally isn’t accepted in recycling bins.

“A new solution is needed to recycle those materials that mechanical recycling cannot,” says Steve Mahon, CEO at Mura Technology, the company that developed the technology and is building the new plant.

“It is also important to recognize the value of waste plastic as a ready resource for the manufacture of plastic, decouple production from fossil resource and entering plastic into a circular economy, avoiding wasting this useful and flexible material.”

The new factory is under construction in a part of Northern England where some of the first large-scale plastic manufacturing began in the 1930s.

-Application of Textiles In Automobile

INTRODUCTION

Mankind knows textiles by generations. On a broad outlook it appears that textiles have no application other than apparel purposes. But as a matter of fact, there are non-apparel uses of textiles such as technical applications.

Wondering what automotive textiles mean?  Petrochemicals PA6Recycling Hydrogen

Automotive textile is that part of textile which is used in accordance with the vehicles i. e. it is widely used in automotive industry right from light weight vehicles to a heavy truck or duty vehicles.

Automotive textile is an integral aspect of technical textile. Since it cannot be classified in apparel textile, it is more of a techno mechanical application of textile. Industrial textiles are widely used in transportation vehicles and systems including cars, trains, buses, airplanes and marine vehicles. Approximately 50 square yards of textile material is used in an average car for interior trim (seating areas headliners, side panels, carpets and trunk, lining, tires, filters, belts hoses, airbags etc.)
