Mutares Finalizes Landmark $450M SABIC Deal, Launching NexPoint Materials

Private equity firm Mutares SE & Co. KGaA  has officially completed its acquisition of SABIC’s regional Engineering Thermoplastics (ETP) business across the Americas and Europe. Valued at an enterprise value of USD 450 million, the transaction stands as the largest acquisition in Mutares’ corporate history.

Following the transaction’s close, the business has launched as an independent entity operating under the name NexPoint Materials. The enterprise forms the anchor platform for Mutares’ newly created strategic business division, “Chemicals & Materials.”

A New Global Leader in Engineering Plastics

NexPoint Materials enters the industrial market as a major global supplier of high-performance polymers, supported by an established manufacturing network and substantial revenue footprint:

  • Annual Revenues: Approximately USD 2.5 billion

  • Manufacturing Network: 8 state-of-the-art production facilities spanning North America, South America, and Europe

  • Workforce: Approximately 2,800 full-time technical and operational personnel

  • Annual Capacity: ~1,085 KT in resin production capacity and ~780 KT in compounding capacity

The transaction significantly reinforces Mutares’ international reach, particularly accelerating its operational expansion within the United States.

Dominant Positions in Core Polymer Segments

The acquired business brings market-leading positions across core engineering thermoplastic categories:

  • Polycarbonate (PC): World’s second-largest producer.

  • Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS): Leading ABS producer in the United States.

  • Polybutylene Terephthalate (PBT): Sole domestic producer of PBT in the United States.

The product line is backed by universally recognized industrial material brands, including LEXAN™, CYCOLOY™, VALOX™, and CYCLOLAC™.

Diversified End-Markets and Balanced Regional Revenue

NexPoint Materials supplies materials across a resilient and diversified industrial customer base:

End-Market Sector Share of Revenues Primary Applications
Automotive 39% Structural components, EV housing, interior/exterior trims
Building & Construction 20% Architectural glazing, protective cladding, roofing
Consumer Products 17% Durable appliances, personal goods, home electronics
Electrical & Electronics 10% Connectors, circuit breaker housings, enclosures
Industrial & Containers 11% Heavy industrial equipment, liquid containers
Healthcare 3% Medical device housings, diagnostic components

Geographically, the revenue base offers balanced stability, with 66% generated in the Americas and 34% in Europe.

Executive Commentary & Strategic Vision

The acquisition enables Mutares to leverage an upstream-integrated production model, extensive product innovation pipelines, and technical capabilities to drive long-term value creation.
