PPWR: A Regulatory Turning Point for Retailers

The Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) is reshaping packaging norms across the EU. By 2030, at least 10% of beverages must be sold in reusable packaging, pushing retailers to adapt both private-label and branded offerings.

Retailers will also take on a critical role in the collection and refund process, enabling closed-loop systems that foster a seamless reuse experience.

Reusable PET in Action Around the World

Regions like South America, South Africa, and Germany have long embraced reusable PET. Consumers appreciate its lightweight, familiar design that works well for on-the-go convenience and large-format options for home use.

Easier Path to Reuse and Lower Carbon Footprints

Packaging is a major driver of Scope 3 emissions in retail. Switching to reusable PET offers a straightforward solution—consumers keep the same bottle type, with only one behavior change: returning it.

This simplified transition supports corporate sustainability goals, while catering to eco-conscious shoppers. PET Beverage Packaging

The Sustainability Advantage: PET vs. Glass and Single-Use

According to the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, reusable PET outperforms other beverage packaging options in material usage, water consumption, and greenhouse gas emissions.

In fact, plastic consumption drops by up to 92% compared to single-use plastic bottles, making reusable PET a smart choice for circular packaging.

Act Now: 2030 Is Closer Than You Think

To stay ahead of PPWR regulations, retailers must begin planning today. PET bottles are cost-effective, scalable, and quick to deploy, allowing early adoption and smoother integration.

Bridgestone Unveils Industry-First 70% Recycled & Renewable Tire at WasteExpo

Bridgestone Americas is making sustainability history by introducing a commercial demonstration tire made with 70% recycled and renewable materials. This marks the first time a tire of this kind will be commercially available, debuting at WasteExpo 2025.

A Milestone in Circular Innovation

The eco-forward tire is based on the Bridgestone M870, a rugged, all-position radial tire engineered for waste collection fleets. What makes this version unique is its use of circular synthetic rubber, including butadiene, halo butyl rubber, circular carbon black, and natural rubber—tracked via a Mass Balance approach. This method ensures the certified sustainable materials used match those accounted for at the beginning of production. PET Beverage Packaging

Additionally, the tire has earned ISCC PLUS certification, a globally recognized standard for validating the sustainability of materials throughout the supply chain. A limited run of these tires will be deployed to urban waste fleets later this month.

“This is not a glimpse into the future, but a reality of today,” said Steve Hoeft, President of Bridgestone’s Commercial Truck Group. “It’s a proof of how we can help fleets achieve their sustainability goals with proven products that meet ISCC’s rigorous standards.”

Drive-Over System Expands Tire Monitoring

In addition to the new tire, Bridgestone is also unveiling its Drive-Over System, an advanced in-yard monitoring tool. Using pressure-sensitive plates, the system captures tread depth and wear data automatically, allowing fleet operators to optimize tire maintenance, extend service life, and reduce costs.

With more frequent, automated data collection, fleets can prevent premature replacements, avoid unsafe wear patterns, and ensure maximum performance from each tire. PET Beverage Packaging

Advancing the Bridgestone E8 Commitment

Both the tire and the Drive-Over System align with Bridgestone’s E8 Commitment, supporting the pillars of “Ecology” and “Efficiency.” These innovations show how sustainability and performance can go hand-in-hand.

Recycled PET Prices Surge Amid Seasonal Demand Revival

The recycled plastics market has seen a noticeable price increase over the past two months, with R-PET and R-LDPE leading the uptrend. After a quiet start to the year, demand has picked up modestly as converters prepare for the spring season.

Stronger Demand and Cost Pressures Drive the Trend

While overall buying volumes remain lower than average, seasonal restocking has prompted converters to return to the market. At the same time, higher input costs and tighter supplies of virgin plastics are supporting price increases across multiple recyclate grades. PET Beverage Packaging

R-PET Sees the Largest Price Gains

Recycled PET (R-PET) prices have jumped the most, with increases of €25-30/tonne in March and an even steeper €40-50/tonne hike in April for clear food-grade pellets and flake. These rises are driven by both stronger seasonal demand and a significant cost push from bottle scrap prices. Colored flake prices also saw a moderate rise of €20-25/tonne.

R-LDPE Hits Two-Year High

Recycled low-density polyethylene (R-LDPE) natural film prices climbed by €20/tonne in March and rose again in April by €25-30/tonne. These levels are now the highest seen in two years, thanks to a shortage of virgin LDPE and increased substitution by recyclates. PET Beverage Packaging

Other Notable Movements

  • R-HDPE prices increased by €20/tonne in March and a further €10-15/tonne in April, reflecting higher production costs.
  • R-HIPS rose sharply in April by €35-40/tonne, fueled by higher prices for standard polystyrene scrap.
  • R-PP, in contrast, showed only marginal gains of €5/tonne or remained flat, hindered by weak demand and competition from cheaper imports.

Outlook for May: Gains May Slow

Looking ahead, recyclers may struggle to maintain the same pace of price hikes in May. Volume calls remain muted, and virgin polymer prices are beginning to fall. Input costs could also stabilize or decline, easing pressure on recyclers.

Key Takeaway: As recyclers capitalize on seasonal demand and rising costs, the current uptrend may continue into early May—but headwinds are building. Stay informed for further updates as market dynamics evolve. PET Beverage Packaging

Tetra Pak Trials Industry-First Paper Cap on Aneto’s Broth Cartons

Leading the Way in Sustainable Packaging

Tetra Pak has taken a bold step in sustainable packaging by trialling the world’s first paper-based cap on Aneto’s popular vegetable broth cartons. This marks a significant milestone in the company’s journey toward creating food packaging that is fully renewable, recyclable, and responsibly sourced.

“We’re on a journey to deliver the world’s most sustainable food package,” said Aldo Fontana, Global Product Manager at Tetra Pak.

This trial reflects a growing trend known as paperization—the shift from fossil-based plastics to fibre-based, renewable materials in packaging design. PET Beverage Packaging

Why Aneto? A Perfect Match for Innovation

Aneto Natural was chosen for this pilot thanks to its sustainability leadership and year-round demand for its products. The brand had previously switched to sugarcane-based bioplastics for caps and coatings, making it a logical partner for this new venture.

“Sustainability isn’t just a commitment for us – it’s part of our DNA,” stated Joaquim Jiménez Santamaria, CEO of Aneto Natural.

Initial test batches of these paper-based caps will be released in Spain, providing real-world data on their durability, resistance to moisture and temperature shifts, and consumer response. PET Beverage Packaging

A New Era in Cap Design

Developing a paper cap is far more complex than a simple material swap. Tetra Pak’s innovation team had to rethink everything—from raw material sourcing to engineering and production.

“This is not just a packaging tweak – it’s a vertical innovation,” explained Pietro Martini, Manager, Solutions Scouting & Early Innovation.

Despite successful internal testing, including recyclability and structural resilience, consumer trials will reveal whether these caps can match the performance of plastic: easy to open, resealable, and durable.

Consumers Want Change

Tetra Pak cites research showing that 21% of consumers prefer renewable packaging, while 31% would recycle more if cartons were made entirely from paperboard. This shift in perception fuels the company’s push for more paper content.

Collaborations like the one with Nissha Metallizing Solutions—to replace aluminium foil layers with FSC-certified paper barriers—aim to increase paper share in cartons to 80% and cut carbon footprints by up to 33%. PET Beverage Packaging
