-Husky makes sustainable packaging a priority

Husky Injection Molding Systems Ltd. has tapped into a variety of markets for the plastics processing industry, but the Canadian injection molding equipment maker’s product portfolio for the food and beverage packaging sector is the major focus at K this year.

“Today, the competition is very strong, very fierce,” Henry Zhang, Husky’s director of marketing and market intelligence, said Oct. 17 during a media booth tour.

-Is rPET economically viable?

According to research by S&P Global Platts, there is a growing disconnect between pricing in the recycled PET flake market and the virgin PET market. “Flake prices have traditionally held a wide and fairly steady discount to the virgin market, making using flakes economically viable,” the report explained. “However, 2019 saw virgin resin prices sink, at first to parity with flake prices, and then below.”

S&P Global Platts Analytics has forecast that the European rPET price will continue to hold at or above the virgin PET price next year. It warned that, if the PET to rPET spread averages close to the Q3 2019 level of $(72) per metric tonne in 2020, this will increase the cost of rPET content by $250 million relative to 2018.

New TECHBLAK™ 85 black masterbatch series helps meet the evolving sustainability needs of the plastics industry

Cabot Corporation today announced the launch of a new black masterbatch series made from postindustrial carbon black and recycled polymers. The new formulations are designed to help plastics producers meet sustainability targets across a wide variety of industries, while maintaining optimal performance.

As plastics manufacturers seek more sustainable solutions to comply with global environmental and labeling standards, these formulations are specifically designed to help the industry lower its carbon footprint and increase the amount of recycled and secondary content in end products.

-In this “biorecycling” factory, enzymes perfectly break down plastic so it can be used again

The process lets any plastic—say a polyester shirt—be recycled into any other plastic (like a clear water bottle). It could fundamentally change the market for recycling.

Inside a bioreactor in the laboratory of the France-based startup Carbios, pulverized PET plastic waste—the kind of plastic found in drink bottles and polyester clothing—is mixed with water and enzymes, heated up, and churned. In a matter of hours, the enzymes decompose the plastic into the material’s basic building blocks, called monomers, which can then be separated, purified, and used to make new plastic that’s identical to virgin material. Later this year, the company will begin construction on its first demonstration recycling plant.

-KHS develops PET containers

KHS has developed wide-neck PET containers for the hot filling of food. According to the German filling and packaging systems supplier, the containers are both light in weight and feature “good recycling properties”, reducing the packaging’s carbon footprint.

“Saving carbon dioxide is an important issue for food companies, both regarding the design of the packaging and the way their supply chains are organised,” said Sebastian Wenderdel, non-beverage global product account manager at KHS Corpoplast.

-Milliken introduces Millad® NX® 8000 ECO in Europe at K 2019

Milliken & Company has announced the European launch, at K 2019, what it describes as one of its most sustainable products yet—Millad® NX® 8000 ECO.

The latest addition to the Millad NX 8000 product range, the ECO clarifying additive not only produces the fully transparent material known as NX UltraClear™ PP, which yields durable end products with superb, glass-like clarity, but addresses the growing trend for greater sustainability among brand owners, converters and consumers.

Designed to offer the same advantages as Millad NX 8000, Millad NX 8000 ECO offers faster production rates, average energy savings of 10% for the production of clarified polypropylene (PP) parts certified by the UL (Underwriters Laboratories) label, tunable clarity to meet specific market needs and the low risk of defects such as white specs, streaks and voids.

Big businesses avoid eco- friendly packaging due to cost

The individuals behind the UK’s first completely compostable crisp packets say consumers should push huge corporations for more eco-friendly packaging.

Their crisp packets are created from cellulose film derived from eucalyptus.

The break down starts within 25 weeks in a home compost bin. As per the reports, two farmers can make around 7000 packets a day and supply local pubs and farm shops, but all bag costs around 10p more to make as compared to a standard crisp packet, meaning it can be hard to convince shops to stock them.

Mr. Mason (Dealer of eco-friendly packaging) stated that they try to absorb some of the deficit but still get turned down by many retailers they approach. “I think it is entirely down to price,” he says.

-Space technology a new frontier in Turkey-Italy partnership

As political allies and economic partners, Turkey and Italy have worked together over the years in areas ranging from automotive, banking and defense to agribusiness and textiles; now space will join that list.

Space is an area both Turkey and Italy are paying more and more attention to, trying to get involved in the 21st century’s global space race.

So far, the two countries’ partnership has been mostly built on other areas, but now there is an opportunity for them to strengthen the longstanding mutual connections in space technology.

-Ireland’s DUP says it can not support PM Johnson’s Brexit deal

Northern Ireland’s Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) said on Thursday it could not support Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s Brexit agreement with the European Union because the deal was not in the British province’s interests.

“These proposals are not, in our view, beneficial to the economic wellbeing of Northern Ireland and they undermine the integrity of the union,” the party said, warning a parliamentary vote on Saturday was just the first stage in approving the deal
