-BP announces technology to enable circularity for unrecyclable PET bottles

BP has announced the launch of enhanced recycling technology that enables currently unrecyclable PET plastic to be transformed.Petrochemical PET Preforms PTA

The petroleum giant said BP Infinia enables currently unrecyclable polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastic waste to be diverted from landfill or incineration and transformed back into new, virgin-quality feedstocks.

BP Infinia technology is designed to turn difficult-to-recycle PET plastic waste – such as black food trays and coloured bottles – into recycled feedstocks that are interchangeable with those made from traditional hydrocarbon sources.

-Sympatex recycled share reaches 80 per cent

Functional textile developer Sympatex has expanded its share of unmixed, recycled polyester laminates in its apparel line to 80 per cent as it looks to develop a range of products that can be upcycled, and as part of its strategy to offer completely non-toxic, recycled and recyclable functional textiles by the end of 2020.Petrochemical PET Preforms PTA

The news comes on the eve of the 2019 Performance Days event in Munich where the company will also reveal details of its on-going collaboration with the Wear2Wear consortium. A European initiative, which aims to bring used polyester fibres back into the textile loop, thus preserving their value.

-RECIPAM project to improve recycling of multilayer food packaging

The RECIPAM project, funded by the Valencian Innovation Agency (AVI), is developing new recycling methods for multilayer food packaging to improve the quality of the resulting materials so they can be incorporated into high value-added applications.

The project partners hope the development of a cost-effective process and high-quality materials will lead to the creation of a recycling chain for this kind of packaging through the involvement and collaboration of the entire value chain.

-Avantium joins Paper Bottle Project

The Paper Bottle Company (Paboco®) – a joint venture between paper packaging material developer BillerudKorsnäs and bottle manufacturing specialist ALPLA -has announced that Avantium joins the Paper Bottle Project.

Avantium will be one of the technology providers for the fully plant-based and recyclable Paper Bottle. A thin layer of Avantium’s PEF (polyethylene furanoate) will provide the Paper Bottle with the high barrier properties (the ability to withstand gas permeability through the bottle) needed for beverages such as beer and carbonated soft drinks.

-Recycled HDPE prices continue to escalate

Market graph iconThe price of recovered natural HDPE has climbed again, in some areas breaking recent records. The price of OCC dropped further, however.

The current national average price of post-consumer natural high-density polyethylene (HDPE) from curbside collection programs is 51.75 cents per pound, compared with 46.38 cents this time last month.Petrochemical PET Preforms PTA

In some areas, it is trading as high as 57.00 cents per pound, a decade high.

The last similar high was in September 2014, when it reached a national average of 52.69 cents per pound.

Recycled HDPE prices continue to escalate

-Spot PE prices slide as suppliers compete for orders

Prices for both polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP)  weakened across the board last week, reports the PlasticsExchange (Chicago) in its Market Update.
