-RESOLVING PLASTIC PACKAGING WASTE: CAN DEPOSIT RETURN SCHEMES PROVIDE A BREAKTHROUGH?

While the prevalence of single-use plastic has grown dramatically over the last 20 years, the systems to contain, collect, reuse and recycle it have not kept pace. Plastic drinking bottles could be made out of 100% recycled plastic, known as rPET, and campaigners are pressing drinks companies to significantly increase the amount of recycled plastic in their bottles.  Petrochemicals CarbonFiber Graphene PEF

The EU Single-Use Plastics Directive sets a 90% separate collection target for plastic beverage bottles by 2029. Policymakers are debating whether deposit return schemes (DRS) can be the solution to achieve this target. Several EU countries have demonstrated that DRS can help meet the SUP targets much earlier than 2029 and guarantee a closed loop for plastic bottles.

DRS are a system where consumers buying a product pay an additional fee (a deposit) that is reimbursed upon the return of the packaging or product to a collection point.

-Leading Textile Tech Innovators Unite to Create World’s First Garment fully powered by HeiQ Viroblock

The upshot of a collaboration among 2A-NYGUARD, COATS, HEIQ, VAGOTEX and SITIP, JUST 5 is an ingenious ‘viroblocked’ jacket that provides the best garment solution for resuming normal life by protecting the wearer, loved ones and everyone encountered.

JUST5 is a multi-functional and fashionable jacket with every component powered by HeiQ Viroblock to protect them from spoilage by contaminating microorganisms in just five minutes. The treatment does not protect the wearer or others against food-borne (or disease-causing) bacteria. But the jacket sets up a highly effective barrier to shield the wearer from spoiling contaminants in the surrounding.Petrochemicals CarbonFiber Graphene PEF

-Are oxo-biodegradable plastics bad for the environment?

Packaging Gateway looks into what oxo-biodegradable plastics are, whether they’re bad for the environment, and the current debates surrounding the material.

Critics of the material say that the plastic does not biodegrade but breaks into microplastics which are then released into the environment and cause significant harm.

Oxo-biodegradable Plastics Association (OPA) chairman Michael Stephen has said that he was disinvited to the upcoming ‘Plastic Free World Conference & Expo’ in Berlin due to his views on oxo-biodegradable plastics.  Petrochemicals CarbonFiber Graphene PEF

Stephen told news source PlasticsToday: “There is a campaign against oxo-biodegradable plastics promoted by the bio-based plastics industry, on which they must by now have spent millions of dollars. They are obviously not doing this to protect the environment but to damage their competitors.”

-Bio-based coatings overview: Increasing activities

Bio-based paints and coatings continue to play a rather small role in the coatings business. The current market share is estimated at around 5 % in sales and 1 % in volume. Most of this is also likely to come from long-established natural raw materials. However, something has been happening for some years now. Petrochemicals CarbonFiber Graphene PEF

The market is still too small for reliable data to be available; the 5 % market share mentioned is almost all that can be found in concrete figures on market size. The figure has also not changed for some time, and was communicated by the market research institute Chemquest as early as 2018, and is also found in exactly the same amount in their newsest global market analyis.

-Lenzing creates unprecedented level of traceability

Most of the top 100 fashion brands have announced targets for 100 per cent sustainable fibres target by 2025, but less than 5 per cent can trace their textile inputs to verify sustainability credentials. To address this challenge, Lenzing, ArmedAngels and Schneider have joined hands with TextileGenesis to create an unprecedented level of traceability.

The fibre-to-retail traceability pilots covered 45 garment styles each containing Lenzing Ecovero specialty viscose fibres or Authentico organic wool, from supply chains spanning six countries. Petrochemicals CarbonFiber Graphene PEF

Using the innovative Fibrecoin technology of the TextileGenesis platform, Lenzing, ArmedAngels, and Schneider were able to issue digital blockchain ‘assets’ (or tokens) in direct proportion to the physical shipments of Lenzing Ecovero and Authentico fibres. These digital tokens provide a unique ‘fingerprint’ and authentication mechanism, preventing adulteration and providing a secure, digital chain-of-custody across the entire textile value chain.
