-ALPLA Group to invest €50m per year in recycling

The ALPLA Group is to invest up to €50m a year on average between now and 2025 in further expanding its recycling activities.

The group plans to globalise its activities in the area of high-quality recyclates in order to close the materials cycle in as many regions as possible.

In 2018, ALPLA Group signed the Global Commitment of the New Plastics Economy and committed to spending a total of €50m to expand its recycling activities up to 2025. ALPLA is now significantly increasing this investment target. From 2021, an average of €50m a year will be ring-fenced specifically for recycling.

Georg Lässer, Head of Corporate Recycling at ALPLA, said: “We have been very active in the past two years. We succeeded in initiating bottle-to-bottle projects around the world, including in Asia, Europe and Central America. We nevertheless continue to see increasing demand on the part of our customers all over the world.”

-Encina, Flint Hills consider renewable aromatics facility in Corpus Christi

Encina Development Group (Encina; The Woodlands, Texas) and Flint Hills Resources say they are exploring a collaboration to produce renewable chemicals and fuels from plastic waste, reported Chemweek.  Polymers Biodegradability CrudeOil PETBottle

The two have signed a non-binding term sheet that proposes construction of a facility in Corpus Christi, Texas. Flint Hills would market the aromatic products produced at the Encina Corpus Christi facility and work with its affiliates to market renewable aromatic products from other Encina plants in the US.

“Our work with Encina is an exciting addition to our growing portfolio of renewable product and technology investments,” says Francis Murphy, senior vice president/chemicals at Flint Hills. “Renewable aromatics and bioplastics are playing an increasingly import role in the product value chain and reducing environmental impacts while still delivering on all the various products that make modern life possible.”

-Novolex boosts recycling potential of plastics bags

Novolex has added easy-to-understand recycling instructions to more of its plastics bags and packaging as part of wider plans to increase its recycling capacity.

The US-based company said it will also include the How2Recycle store drop-off label on more of its products across its business units.

Products from its Shields division to have the label added include poly mailers for shipping applications and security bags used in banking.

Hilex products that will benefit include its ‘Thank You’ plastics T-shirt bags, produce bags for conventional and organic items, and its Load & Seal tamper-evident delivery bags, which are said to be growing in demand as ‘to-go’ orders increase at restaurants.  Polymers Biodegradability CrudeOil PETBottle

-BASF’s heat-stabilised Ultramid material a rising star in automotive applications

Legal requirements for pollutant emissions, downsizing of internal combustion engines, alternative powertrains such as electric, hybrid or fuel cell have accelerated further development of the vehicle rapidly. Fiberglass-reinforced plastics, such as BASF’s Ultramid®, make a significant contribution to further development. With the new development of the heat-stabilized Ultramid® B3PG6 BK23238, BASF is expanding its product portfolio of polyamides for the high-temperature range. A new type of stabilization enables heat resistance of up to 190 °C and protects sensitive electronic components from galvanic corrosion. Polymers Biodegradability CrudeOil PETBottle

Heat-resistance, good long-term use properties and weld-resistance are the basic prerequisites for components in current and future powertrains. Whether in the internal combustion engine as well as in the hybrid or electric vehicle, reliable and technically flawless materials are indispensable in a demanding environment. Esterpet is tackling single use plastics thanks to £9m funding from Shawbrook Bank

The management team of Esterform Packaging Ltd is behind Esterpet Ltd which was created to satisfy growing demand for recycled Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET)

Esterpet has purchased two Starlinger recoSTAR PET production lines to produce more than 13,000 tonnes of recycled PET each

Shawbrook Bank has provided asset finance facilities totalling £9m to both Esterpet Ltd and Esterform Packaging Ltd for the project

The management behind the UK’s largest independent producer of PET bottles and containers is taking a leading position in the fight against single use plastics thanks to a £9m funding boost.  Polymers Biodegradability CrudeOil PETBottle

Leeds-based Esterpet Ltd, set up by the management of Esterform Packaging Ltd, was launched to satisfy a growing demand for recycled Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) products in the UK.

Following a government tax on plastic packaging containing less than 30% recycled raw material, demand for recycled PET – or rPET – is now outstripping supply.

An estimated 100,000 tonnes of rPET is needed across the UK PET container sector as organisations look to conform to the Government requirements.

-Vopak to expand capacity for waste feedstocks at Rotterdam

Vopak is to expand its capacity in Rotterdam for the storage of waste-based feedstocks for production of biofuels, the Dutch chemicals storage and logistics provider said on Wednesday

Vopak will build 16 tanks with a combined capacity of 64,000 cubic metres at Vopak Terminal Vlaardingen.  Polymers Biodegradability CrudeOil PETBottle

The renewable feedstocks that will be stored in the new tanks will come from waste materials such as used cooking oil and tallow.

The Dutch logistics major also published its financial results for 2020; as expected, the effects of the logistics woes caused by the pandemic hit the company.

Sales fell around 5%, but earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT, or operating profit) and net profit collapsed compared with 2019 on the back of provisions caused by the global downturn.

-PRE and SCS launch reciprocal membership

Plastics Recyclers Europe (PRE), the organisation representing the voice of the European plastics recyclers, and Styrenics Circular Solutions (SCS), the value chain initiative to increase the circularity of styrenic polymers, have deepened their collaboration by introducing reciprocal membership.

This collaboration adds to the network of the already existing 11 SCS members, from across the value chain and to the extensive network of more than 140 PRE members.

Jens Kathmann, secretary-general of SCS, commented: “This is a crucial new membership for SCS. Joining forces together with PRE, which represents the individual recyclers across Europe, will further accelerate the momentum that SCS has been building to create a strong market pull away from incineration and landfill towards significantly increased plastics-to-plastics recycling of polystyrene.

Building on the excellent sortability and unique circularity of polystyrene, our joint efforts will extend the closed loop food contact recycling beyond bottles to new applications.”  Polymers Biodegradability CrudeOil PETBottle
