Polyblend’s Bold €4M Push for Recycled Plastic Compounds
Polyblend is investing €4 million in a production-line conversion at its Bad Sobernheim plant in Germany, increasing its ability to manufacture plastic compounds made with mechanically recycled feedstock.
The converted line is scheduled to begin operating toward the end of 2027. Polyblend says it will have annual capacity of up to 15,000 metric tonnes of recycled plastic compounds.
The final investment decision was announced on September 1, 2026, and independently reported by industry publication Plastech the same day. The project represents a practical response to rising European demand for traceable recycled materials, particularly from automotive manufacturers. recycled plastic compounds
Key facts
- Investment: €4 million
- Location: Bad Sobernheim, Germany
- Project: Conversion of an existing production line
- Feedstock: Mechanically recycled plastic
- Planned capacity: Up to 15,000 metric tonnes per year
- Expected start: End of 2027
- Target market: Manufacturers seeking circular polymer solutions, including the automotive sector recycled plastic compounds
Existing infrastructure supports the expansion
Rather than constructing an entirely new production site, Polyblend will adapt an existing line at Bad Sobernheim. This approach may allow the company to add capacity while making greater use of its current industrial infrastructure.
Polyblend has not disclosed the line’s present capacity, the expected number of new jobs, its energy requirements or the percentage of recycled material that will be used in each finished compound. The announced figure of 15,000 tonnes therefore describes maximum planned production capacity, not a guaranteed annual output.
The company presents the project as part of a broader strategy built around reconsidering plastic use, reducing its environmental impact and developing more circular material flows.
Automotive rules strengthen demand
The timing is significant for Europe’s automotive supply chain. The EU’s new End-of-Life Vehicles Regulation entered into force in August 2026 and introduces mandatory recycled-plastic targets for newly manufactured vehicles.
Under the regulation, recycled material must account for 15% of the plastic used in new vehicles from 2032. That target rises to 25% in 2036. The rules are intended to create a more dependable market for secondary raw materials while improving vehicle design, dismantling and material recovery.
Polyblend’s planned 2027 start date would give the company several years to qualify products, establish supply arrangements and work with customers before the first recycled-content target takes effect.
However, production capacity alone does not demonstrate regulatory compliance or environmental performance. Automotive customers will also need dependable information about material origin, recycled content, technical properties and quality consistency. recycled plastic compounds
Why mechanically recycled compounds matter
Mechanical recycling processes recovered plastic through sorting, cleaning and reprocessing rather than breaking it down into its basic chemical components. The resulting material can be blended with additives or other polymers to obtain characteristics required for particular applications.
For automotive manufacturers, the challenge is not simply to use more recovered material. Compounds must also meet specifications for strength, durability, appearance, processing and safety.
Suppliers able to deliver consistent recycled plastic compounds at commercial scale could therefore become increasingly important as manufacturers prepare for binding EU requirements. recycled plastic compounds
What happens next
Polyblend must now complete the conversion, commission the equipment and prepare the line for its scheduled launch at the end of 2027.
The company has not published a detailed construction timetable or identified specific automotive customers connected to the project. Those points should be treated as undisclosed unless Polyblend provides additional information.
If completed as announced, the investment will add up to 15,000 tonnes of annual recycled-compound capacity to the European market. Its longer-term effect will depend on customer adoption, feedstock availability, product performance and the successful operation of the converted line. recycled plastic compounds
