Seaweed-Based Biodegradable Plastic Packaging: A Sustainable Innovation from Aberystwyth University

A breakthrough in sustainable materials

Researchers at Aberystwyth University’s Institute of Biological, Environmental and Rural Sciences (IBERS) have developed a biodegradable plastic made from seaweed extracts. The study, published in Algal Research, explores how alginate—a natural compound found in seaweed—can be transformed into a flexible, plastic-like material for food packaging.

This innovation is part of a wider push to replace petroleum-based plastics with renewable, biodegradable alternatives that reduce environmental harm.


How seaweed is turned into biodegradable plastic

The material is created using a relatively simple but effective process:

Seaweed-derived alginate is extracted and converted into a powder. This powder is then mixed with water and combined with other biological compounds to improve its strength and elasticity. The mixture is heated and cast into moulds, forming thin films that resemble conventional plastic wrap.

These films can be used as packaging materials, particularly for food products, where flexibility, transparency, and safety are essential.


Testing performance: strength, safety, and water resistance

The researchers are currently evaluating the material for several key properties:

  • Mechanical strength
  • Water resistance
  • Antibacterial performance
  • Elasticity and durability

Early results suggest the seaweed-based plastic can compete with traditional plastic films in certain applications, particularly short-term food packaging.


Why this research matters for global plastic waste

Plastic film is one of the most widely used forms of plastic worldwide. According to the university’s findings:

  • Plastic films make up nearly one-third of global plastic production
  • Around 400 million tonnes of plastic are produced globally each year
  • Approximately 15 billion kilograms of plastic waste enters marine environments annually

These figures highlight the urgent need for alternatives that reduce long-term pollution, especially in oceans and ecosystems.

Dr Jessica Adams from IBERS explains the potential of seaweed-based materials:

Seaweed has unique chemical properties that make it highly adaptable for biodegradable materials. Films made from alginate can form transparent, flexible sheets that behave similarly to plastic but break down naturally after use.

The key advantage is that the material is fully biodegradable, supporting a circular lifecycle where packaging does not persist in the environment.


Funding and industry collaboration

The research was supported by the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) and food manufacturer Samworth Brothers, showing growing interest from both academic and commercial sectors in sustainable packaging solutions.


Wider industry developments in seaweed packaging

This innovation aligns with other developments in seaweed-based materials across the packaging industry:

  • Homethings is adopting Kelpi’s seaweed-based coatings for refill sachets designed to biodegrade safely after use.
  • Noriware has introduced a seaweed-based top seal film for fruit and vegetable packaging, designed to work with existing machinery and comply with emerging plastic reduction regulations.

These developments suggest seaweed-based materials are moving closer to commercial-scale adoption.


The future of circular packaging materials

Seaweed-based plastics represent a promising step toward reducing dependency on fossil-fuel plastics. Their biodegradability, renewability, and compatibility with food packaging systems make them strong candidates for future regulatory and environmental requirements.
