Italy Recycling Breakthrough – Revet Doubles Plastic Packaging Granule Production to Over 20,000 Tons and Elevates Circular Economy Leadership in Italy 23-10-2025
Plastic Packaging – Introduction
The Italian company Revet has inaugurated a new production line in Pontedera, which brings its annual output of granules made from plastic packaging waste to over 20,000 tons. With a substantial investment of €11 million, the firm has effectively doubled its plastic recycling capacity, signalling a major step for the circular economy in Italy.
Capacity Expansion & Investment
The expansion in Pontedera involves the second line that will be fully operational next year. When both lines are running at full speed, Revet’s capacity will exceed 20,000 tons per year of plastic packaging granules. The investment supports not only volume but also quality and traceability of recycled materials.
Improved Recycling Rate & Quality
Last year Revet processed more than 174,000 tons of materials – including plastics, glass, aluminium, steel and Tetra Paks – and achieved a recycling rate of 68.4 %, already surpassing the EU’s 65 % target for packaging by 2035, and doing so ahead of schedule. The company handles the complete recycling chain for mixed plastic packaging and ensures 100 % traceability from collection to finished granules.
Tailored Materials and In-house Laboratory
As part of the investment, Revet built a pilot plant and a new in-house laboratory at the Pisa site. These facilities enable the production of bespoke recycled materials formulated to meet specific customer application needs, allowing the company to serve more demanding industrial uses and ensure higher performance of recycled granules.
Employment Impact
The doubling of production capacity has also had a direct employment impact: the company hired 20 new employees, raising its total workforce to 278 staff. The expansion therefore creates jobs and supports the regional economy in Tuscany.
Strategic Significance for the Group
Revet is part of the Plures Group, via the multi-utility company Plures. According to the Group’s CEO, this expansion is a key element of a broader growth plan that includes biodigesters, a paper recovery platform, a WEEE plant and a textile hub. By strengthening Revet’s capacity, the Group consolidates its recycling supply chain and reinforces its leadership in Italy.
Future Outlook & Circular Economy Leadership
Revet not only meets current targets but already exceeds regulatory expectations, positioning itself as a pioneer in the transition from linear to circular economic models. With this new line, Revet plans to go further by recovering not only packaging plastics but also other types of plastics currently not collected in the household waste stream.
Why It Matters
Expanding recycling capacity and quality matters for several reasons:
-
It drives the transition to a circular economy by turning packaging waste into high-value granules.
-
It lowers dependence on virgin materials and reduces environmental footprint.
-
It strengthens regional industrial ecosystems, jobs, and supply chains.
-
It improves traceability and material performance, enabling recycled content in more demanding applications.
Conclusion
The doubling of Revet’s production capacity to over 20,000 tons per year of recycled plastic packaging granules marks a powerful step in Italy’s recycling sector. Backed by an €11 million investment, a new pilot plant and lab, improved employment and quality outcomes, Revet sets a benchmark for circular economy practices. Its success is an encouraging example of how industry can lead the way in sustainable resource management. Plastic Packaging
