Explosion at MOL’s Olefin 1 Plant Leaves One Dead and Nine Injured

A serious industrial accident occurred at the MOL Group petrochemical complex in Tiszaújváros, Hungary, on the morning of May 22. An explosion at the Olefin 1 plant resulted in one fatality and left nine people injured during the facility’s restart operations.

According to MOL, the incident happened while the Olefin 1 unit was being brought back online. The explosion triggered a fire inside the facility, prompting an emergency response from on-site firefighting teams.

Firefighters were able to quickly contain the blaze and extinguish the flames later that morning. Emergency crews also assisted injured workers at the scene.

The company confirmed that a full investigation has been launched to determine the exact cause of the accident. Preliminary findings suggest that hydrocarbons may have remained inside a pipe connected to the Olefin 1 unit during the restart procedure, potentially leading to the explosion.

MOL stated that other parts of the Tiszaújváros petrochemical complex continue to operate normally, including the Olefin 2 plant. The company has not yet released additional details about the victims or the extent of the damage.

Industrial safety experts are expected to examine operational procedures, maintenance records, and restart protocols as part of the investigation. Authorities will also review whether all safety measures were properly followed before operations resumed.

The Tiszaújváros complex is one of Hungary’s most important petrochemical production sites and plays a key role in the regional chemical and energy sector.
