Pet prices in Latin America are stable
Prices for polyethylene terephthalate (PET) in most Latin American countries
remain unchanged in January, despite rising prices in Asia, ICIS reports .
The offer remains extensive, as the markets in the region are weak against the backdrop of the New Year holidays.
Volatility is mainly due to a wide range of prices in the regions, which depend on imports mainly from Mexico and Asia.
Since December, there has been a growing Asian price trend for raw materials, which slowly raises PET prices and led to an increase in prices by USD10-30 per ton last week. This trend may ultimately affect prices in Latin America.
However, offers from North America were very competitive due to the stability of commodity prices and weakened seasonal demand in the region.
PET offers throughout the region mostly exceed CFR (cost and freight) at the main port for USD1000 per ton.
It is expected that trade in the region will improve in the second half of January amid sufficient supplies, as the slow economy in the region will continue to affect consumer interest.
According to ScanPlast reviewMarket Report, in January-November, the estimated PET consumption in Russia increased by 2% compared to the same period a year earlier and amounted to 639.58 thousand tons. Compared with November 2018, the total estimated consumption in the reporting month decreased by 22% and amounted to 46.16 thousand tons against 59.34 thousand tons last year.
