-MEG spot prices in Europe rose

MOSCOW Spot prices for monoethylene glycol (MEG) in Europe rose amid increasing demand and delays in import supplies, ICIS reports .

In early January, European wholesale MEG prices rose due to increased demand, increased spot purchases and limited supplies of imported materials.

2019 was a difficult year due to an increase in global capacities, and a decrease in demand, which led to a record decline in prices.

-New fluorescent tech can light up food packaging recycling rates

Current sustainability objectives and the drive to a more effective circular economy have increased the demand for recycled materials in packaging, yet despite this the biggest hurdle to boosting the amount of recycled plastic for food packaging remains the poor quality of recyclates.NexTek-Bottle-Scan-Recycling-Fluorescent

One of the key limitations of the current technologies is that whilst recyclers can sort plastic by polymer type, they can’t readily identify what the product once contained.

-OPEC sees growing supply threat from rivals beyond U.S. shale

OPEC’s latest forecasts suggested a weaker outlook for global oil markets this year as surging supplies from competitors from Norway to Guyana threaten the group’s efforts to defend crude prices.

The organization and its allies — which together account for about half the world’s oil output — are embarking on a fresh round of production cuts as another year of booming rival supplies threatens to unleash a new glut. OPEC’s latest monthly report shows their challenge extends far beyond the shale patch of Texas and North Dakota.

The Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries boosted forecasts for growth in output from non-members in 2020 by 180,000 barrels a day to 2.35 million a day, as offshore projects once seen unfeasible in an era of lower oil prices take off. While the outlook for the U.S. was lowered, America will still account for almost two thirds of the new output.Bioplastic CrudeOil Plastic Recycling

-UK R-PET colourless flake prices drop on virgin PET competition

Colourless recycled polyethylene terephthalate (R-PET) spot prices have seen significant reductions because of pressure caused by low virgin PET prices, market sources said this week.

The three-digit drop at the low end of the price range was a result of sellers offering significantly lower prices in order to secure business from buyers tempted to switch back to virgin.

Prices below £700/tonne FD UK were also heard in the market but these were not widely confirmed, though prices could still come under pressure if the virgin market remains at low levels.Bioplastic CrudeOil Plastic Recycling

-European R-PET sentiment dominated by upstream costs, geopolitics

The direction of virgin polyethylene terephthalate (PET) prices and the availability of post-consumer material, together with ever-increasing demand from brands and fast moving consumer goods (FMCGs) for certain grades of recycled material, are all impacting recycled PET (R-PET) sentiment into the new year, according to market sources.Bioplastic CrudeOil Plastic Recycling

Many R-PET buyers and sellers are watching the virgin PET market and upstream feedstocks paraxylene (PX) and monoethylene glycol (MEG) in an attempt to understand where R-PET prices may go in the first quarter.

-New PET bottle recycling rule effective on Feb. 1

In 2018, a waste crisis occurred in Seoul after private waste collectors refused to pick up plastic, leading to the central government banning the use of plastic bags and cups in big supermarkets and coffee shops nationwide.

Starting from Feb. 1, residents of the capital will face another consequence. The city will collect plastic bottles made of polyethylene terephthalate ― simply known as PET ― separately  Bioplastic CrudeOil Plastic Recycling

Residents will have to put PET bottles in separate bags for collectors to pick them up. The new rule will only be applied to transparent water PET bottles ― colored beer and soda bottles and transparent milk bottles will be excluded. The new PET collections will be on Thursday only.
