Rieter Venture Targets Certified Recycled Yarns at Industrial Scale

Recycling Powerhouse brings together textile machinery, sorting and recycling expertise in an effort to make certified recycled yarn production repeatable across international markets.

Rieter is supporting a new Swiss textile-recycling venture that aims to move recycled-yarn manufacturing beyond isolated projects and into standardized industrial facilities.

Recycling Powerhouse Ltd., established in Switzerland in July 2026, plans to develop a network of textile-to-textile recycling operations through a franchise-based model. The first reference facility is scheduled to launch in Qatar in early 2027 with Suhail Industrial Holding Group.

The venture is backed by Rieter Group, Swiss textile engineering company Säntis Textiles and Belgian sorting-technology specialist Valvan. Together, the partners intend to combine textile sorting, waste preparation, fiber recovery and spinning within a traceable production system.

A standardized model for textile recycling

Many textile-recycling projects depend on locally developed processes, machinery configurations and quality standards. Recycling Powerhouse is taking a different approach by creating a common technical and operational blueprint that can be deployed by franchise partners in multiple markets.

The company is expected to provide plant engineering, recycling technologies, operating procedures, digital systems, audits and technical support. Franchise facilities will also be required to follow shared standards for certification, quality control and material traceability.

Yarns manufactured by participating facilities are intended to be sold under a common brand as certified recycled yarns.

Why certified recycled yarns matter

The textile industry generates large quantities of waste, but only a small share of discarded textiles currently returns to the market as new textile products. Rieter and its partners state that less than 1% of used textiles are recycled into new textiles.

Closing that gap requires more than collecting unwanted garments. Textile waste must be identified, sorted by fiber composition, stripped of unsuitable components and processed without excessively damaging the fibers.

Manufacturers must then produce yarn with sufficiently stable properties for commercial spinning, weaving or knitting.

Certification and traceability are equally important. Apparel companies need reliable information about recycled content, input materials and processing conditions to support sourcing decisions and environmental claims.

Recycling Powerhouse is intended to connect these stages within one controlled production framework.

Rieter brings fiber preparation and spinning expertise

Rieter will contribute machinery and technical knowledge for preparing recycled fibers and spinning short-staple material.

Mechanical recycling can shorten or weaken fibers as fabrics are opened and torn apart. Preserving as much usable fiber length as possible is therefore essential for producing consistent yarn.

According to Rieter, its tearing and fiber-processing technology is designed to recover fibers while limiting unnecessary quality loss. The recovered material can then be prepared and blended for industrial yarn production.

The project could create additional demand not only for spinning machinery, but also for plant engineering, digital services, maintenance and technical support.

Rieter also referred to the Recycling Powerhouse partnership in its 2026 half-year reporting, describing its purpose as the industrialization, standardization and scaling of textile recycling.

Valvan adds automated sorting technology

Valvan will supply technology for identifying and preparing textile waste before fiber recovery.

Its contribution includes Fibersort, an automated system that uses near-infrared analysis and artificial intelligence to sort textiles according to their fiber composition and color. Accurate sorting is important because mixed or incorrectly identified materials can reduce the consistency and commercial value of recycled fibers.

Valvan’s Trimclean technology is designed to remove disruptive components from textile waste before the material enters subsequent recycling stages.

These preparation steps can help reduce contamination and produce a more predictable feedstock for tearing and spinning equipment.

Qatar facility will test the blueprint

The first franchise operation is scheduled to start in Qatar in early 2027 through a partnership with Suhail Industrial Holding Group.

Suhail already has activities in recycling sectors including metals, plastics and steel. The textile facility will allow the group to expand into another material stream while testing the Recycling Powerhouse model under commercial operating conditions.

Rather than functioning only as a local recycling plant, the Qatar project is expected to serve as a reference for future franchise facilities. Its performance could provide evidence about production reliability, recycled-yarn quality and the economics of combining several recycling stages in one standardized system.

The partners have not yet published detailed information on the facility’s planned production capacity, investment value, textile feedstock or final yarn range. Those factors will be important when assessing the project’s potential impact.
