-Truetzschler solutions for sustainable affordable wipes

Truetzschler Nonwovens and Truetzschler Card Clothing will introduce new line concepts and wires for efficiently making sustainable nonwovens for wipes or hygiene textiles at the forthcoming INDEX show in Geneva (Booth No. 2327).

-CZECH SCIENTISTS DEVELOPING REVOLUTIONARY MICROWAVABLE, “SMART” BIOPLASTIC BOWL

Czech scientists have invented a new kind of bioplastic which they say decomposes remarkably fast– and is highly resistant to heat. Researchers from Tomáš Baťa University in Zlín say the product could be brought to market within two years. It could represent a significant advance in global efforts to eventually replace single-use plastic waste.

China’s decision two years ago to impose a ban on the import of plastic waste set off alarm bells in countries throughout the European Union, which have historically done a poor job of recycling and storing plastics.

The Czech Republic, which jumped on the sorted waste bandwagon rather late, had by that time already become European leaders in sorting plastic waste – but lacked enough places to store it.

-Versalis launches chemical recycling project in Mantova, Italy

Versalis has launched a project for the development of a new technology to chemically recycle plastic waste, the Italian chemicals major said on Monday.

The project is a joint venture with Italian engineering company Servizi di Ricerche e Sviluppo (S.R.S.), and will use pyrolysis technology to transform mixed plastic waste into feedstock for new polymers.

The first plant will be built at Versalis’ Mantova site in Italy and will have capacity of 6,000 tonnes per year. A start-up date was not disclosed.

-P&G signs deal for 200 million bottles’ worth of recycled plastic

Procter & Gamble (P&G) has signed a deal to source 200 million bottles’ worth of recycled plastic over the next five years, as it strives to halve the amount of virgin plastics it uses by 2030.

Under the deal, P&G will receive recycled plastic feedstocks for the manufacture of home cleaning product packaging from Viridor, the UK-based recycling and energy recovery firm.

Plastic supplied under the deal will be from post-consumer sources, with Viridor claiming it will be able to up the quantity of plastics delivered to P&G on a year-on-year basis through to 2025. The firm has three dedicated plastics recycling facilities in the UK – at Avonmouth, Rochester and Skelmersdale – through which the plastics for P&G will be sourced.

-P&G and Viridor agree five-year contract for supply of HDPE

UK recycling and energy recovery company Viridor will supply HDPE (high-density polyethylene) to P&G in a move that is projected to save the equivalent of 200 million bottles of virgin plastic over the five-year duration of the contract.

The companies, both founding partners of the UK Plastics Pact, say they are committed to inspiring positive action on the environment and driving circular change. Consumers will apparently see evidence of this on their supermarket shelves in P&G’s Ariel laundry product range which aims to reach up to 50% recycled content in its liquid bottles as of 2020.
