Fluor Awarded Engineering, Procurement and Construction Contract for World-Scale Adiponitrile Plant

Fluor Corporation announced today that it was recently awarded a contract to provide engineering, procurement and construction for a new 400 kilo-ton-per-annum adiponitrile (ADN) plant in Shanghai, China. The new ADN plant is part of INVISTA’s ongoing work at the Shanghai Chemical Industry Park where the company recently completed a 215 kilo-ton-per-annum hexamethylenediamine (HMD) plant and a 150 kilo-ton-per-annum nylon 6,6 polymer plant. Fluor booked the undisclosed contract value in the fourth quarter of 2019.

“Fluor has been providing engineering, procurement and construction solutions to clients in China for more than 40 years,” said Mark Fields, group president of Fluor’s Energy & Chemicals business. “With this award, our proud legacy in China continues and we look forward to supporting INVISTA’s efforts to expeditiously increase production of ADN with their company’s most-advanced technology to meet growing demand within China and globally.”

-U.A.E. Company Produces Mideast’s First Plant-Based Bottles

A Middle Eastern drinking-water company is producing the region’s first bottles made entirely from fermented plant sugars.Chemicals Biodegradable Bioplastic

Agthia Group, which markets the Al Ain brand of drinking water, plans to distribute its first shipment of water in the biodegradable containers within a few months, Chief Executive Officer Tariq Ahmed Al Wahedi said in an interview. The Abu Dhabi-based company is in talks with potential buyers across the United Arab Emirates including hotels, restaurants and government agencies, he said.

Agthia makes the new bottles from corn sugars, which it processes into a resin and molds like plastic. It fashions the bottle caps from fermented sugar cane. The plant-based materials can decompose in as little as 80 days, Al Wahedi said in Dubai, the second-biggest emirate in the U.A.E. after Abu Dhabi.

-The Russian economy expects an increase in food prices and an increase in waste after the introduction of a ban on polymer packaging

The Russian economy is expected to increase prices for dairy products, meat and fish, groceries and bakery products by almost 10%, as well as a large-scale increase in the volume of food and paper waste after the ban on polymer packaging, Kommersant reports citing research by scientists of the Higher School of Public Administration (HSHA) of Moscow State University M.V. Lomonosov.

The ban on packages from the checkout area will not give unambiguous positive results: the implementation of this scenario may reduce the volume of polymer packaging waste by 2024, but will lead to a serious increase in paper waste (by 1.15 million tons the next year after the ban was introduced).

-VEOLIA TO SUPPLY CHLORIDE-REMOVAL SYSTEM FOR PULP PLANT IN BRAZIL

Veolia Water Technologies (www.veoliawatertechnologies.com) will support a major expansion of a mill in Brazil by providing a turnkey chloride removal system designed to optimize the processing of wood-derived pulp used in the making of cellulose fibers.

The pulping production uses a washing and cleaning process to increase the purity of the pulp. The resulting product of this process is a liquid stream that is rich in organics for energy production. Chemicals Biodegradable Bioplastic

This liquor, however, requires careful management and removal of chemicals to avoid the undesired build-up of chloride and potassium in the recovery cycle, which if left uncontrolled, can create corrosion and boiler fouling.

-Malaysia is not Asia’s top ocean plastic polluter

Following from the recent headlines in the media claiming that Malaysia is the top plastic ocean polluter in Asia, we would like to clarify that we are disappointed with the inaccurate and misleading headlines of these articles.Chemicals Biodegradable Bioplastic

The report cited in the articles, entitled “Plastic Packaging in Southeast Asia and China”, only states that Malaysia ranked the highest among the six countries studied in the report in terms of annual per capita plastic packaging consumption, at 16.78 kg per person.

But this high-level consumption does not translate to highest polluter. We would like to reiterate that there is no data or findings in the report which support these headlines.
