Europe’s energy transition is accelerating, but it faces a structural challenge that cannot be ignored: how to store renewable energy reliably and at scale

Solar and wind power are essential to decarbonization, yet their intermittent nature creates mismatches between production and consumption. Without effective storage, excess renewable electricity is wasted and grid stability is compromised.

This is why long duration energy storage has become a strategic priority for Europe.

Energy storage systems allow surplus renewable power to be stored and released when demand rises, supporting grid resilience and reducing reliance on fossil fuels. Within this landscape, Italy is emerging as a key player in what is increasingly described as Europe’s green battery factory. green battery factory Europe

In Rovereto, Green Energy Storage has presented an innovative hydrogen manganese battery designed specifically for long duration energy storage. green battery factory Europe

This technology represents more than a single industrial achievement. It reflects a broader European ambition to build domestic energy storage capacity, reduce dependence on imported raw materials, and strengthen energy sovereignty.

The origins of this project date back more than a decade. As renewable energy capacity expanded across Europe, it became clear that conventional battery technologies were not sufficient for future needs. Lithium ion batteries, while effective for short term applications, are limited in lifespan, cost efficiency, and storage duration. Most are designed for a few hours of energy discharge, making them unsuitable for managing seasonal variability or prolonged periods of low renewable generation.

Long duration energy storage, capable of storing energy for days rather than hours, was largely missing from the market. Addressing this gap became essential to managing renewable overcapacity during production peaks and ensuring grid stability during extended demand cycles. This realization laid the foundation for the hydrogen manganese battery.  green battery factory Europe

The technology stands out for its material choices. Hydrogen is produced internally within the system, reducing external supply dependencies, while manganese is abundant, low cost, and environmentally compatible. Unlike lithium or cobalt, manganese does not face the same geopolitical or supply chain risks, making it a strategic material for Europe’s energy transition.

At the core of the system is flow battery technology

This approach separates energy storage capacity from power output, allowing installations to be scaled independently based on specific needs. As a result, the battery can be adapted for grid scale storage, industrial applications, or renewable energy plants without compromising performance or durability.  green battery factory Europe

Flow battery technology also offers significant advantages in terms of longevity. With more than 10,000 charge cycles, the hydrogen manganese battery far exceeds the lifespan of many conventional storage solutions. This durability reduces replacement costs, improves lifecycle economics, and supports long term infrastructure planning. green battery factory Europe

Cost competitiveness is another critical factor

The cost per kilowatt hour stored is significantly lower than many existing solutions, thanks to the use of inexpensive and widely available materials. At the same time, the system is designed to be fully recyclable, aligning with Europe’s circular economy objectives and increasingly strict sustainability regulations. green battery factory Europe

From a grid perspective, long duration energy storage plays a central role in stabilizing renewable energy systems. It enables excess power generated during periods of high sun or wind to be stored and redistributed during demand peaks or low production phases. This capability is essential for integrating higher shares of renewables into national and cross border electricity networks.

Energy storage is also becoming a geopolitical issue. Europe’s energy security depends on reducing exposure to fossil fuel imports and volatile global markets. By investing in domestic energy storage technologies, Europe strengthens its strategic autonomy while supporting industrial growth. green battery factory Europe

The urgency of this transition is amplified by rising electricity demand. The expansion of artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and data centers is expected to significantly increase energy consumption in the coming years. Meeting this demand sustainably will require renewable energy paired with long duration energy storage solutions capable of operating at scale.

To support industrial development, Green Energy Storage has secured 61.5 million euros in European funding through the IPCEI framework. This investment highlights the strategic importance of energy storage within Europe’s industrial and climate policy.

The company is currently in the scale up phase, with commercial production planned for 2026. International market entry is expected in 2027, with a strong focus on the European market. Collaboration with industrial and scientific partners continues to refine performance and prepare the technology for large scale deployment.

Europe’s ambition to become a green battery factory reflects a broader transformation of its energy system. Long duration energy storage is no longer a niche technology but a foundational component of a renewable based economy.
