-Evergreen Ups Game as PET Bottle Recycler and rPET Producer

Acquisitions and expansions enable the company to increase food-grade rPET production, and technology is streamlining its recycling operations.

Thanks to an enterprising acquisition strategy, Clyde, OH-based plastics recycler and manufacturer Evergreen is emerging as a leading producer of food-grade recycled polyethylene terephthalate (rPET) — even as it increases its PET-bottle recycling capacity.PET-Bottle-Recycler- Sustainable-Packaging

Evergreen, owned by The Sterling Group, Houston, acquired UltrePET and Novapet from wTe in November 2021. The acquisitions boosted Evergreen’s annual production of rPET from 40 million pounds one year ago to more than 147 million pounds currently. According to Evergreen, the company is now one of North America’s three largest producers of food-grade rPET.

With the acquisitions, the company has grown from one location in January 2021 to four North American locations currently. The four are Clyde, the original facility; Albany, NY; Amherst, Nova Scotia; and Riverside, California, which Evergreen acquired from CarbonLite in mid-2021.

Evergreen is also implementing a significant upgrade at its Clyde facility (shown above), adding a 54,000 sq ft building to its existing 238,000 sq ft facility. The new building will house four high-volume food-grade rPET manufacturing lines. Evergreen expects to complete the Clyde expansion in June 2022, bringing its annual rPET production capacity to 217 million pounds

The supply increase is well timed due to increased demand for rPET in North America. Recycled PET has become increasingly popular as consumer packaged goods companies seek sustainable alternatives to virgin resins for beverage bottles, food containers, health and beauty packaging, home products, and more.

The 2020 PET Recycling Report from the National Association for PET Container Resources (NAPCOR) noted a 10% increase in end-use consumption of rPET in the United States and Canada between 2019 and 2020. The report also revealed that the use of rPET in the food/beverage and non-food/beverage bottle categories grew 32% in 2020, and that US and Canadian rPET consumption grew from 1 billion to 1.8 billion pounds between 2010 and 2020. -FSSAI now permits use of recycled plastics for pkg food

FSSAI has issued a direction regarding the operationalisation of the draft related to the use of recycled plastics for the purpose of packaging by the food industry.

These regulations say that ‘products made of recycled plastics including carry bags may be used for packaging, storing, carrying or dispensing of food products as and when standards and guidelines are framed by the food authority. Such packaging materials shall also comply with any other national standards/regulations as applicable’. PET-Bottle-Recycler- Sustainable-Packaging

This proviso will replace the sub clause (e) related to plastic materials intended to come in contact with food products, under clause 4 related to specific requirements for primary food packaging, in the packaging regulations.

Earlier under clause (e), the use of recycled plastics material was prohibited for food contact material.

As the food authority is in process of notifying the regulations related to the use of recycled plastics as food contact material, and according to the FSSAI, it was taking some more time for the final notification, the food authority has decided to operationlise these regulations. Called the FSS (Packaging) Amendment Regulations 2022 permitting the use of recycled plastics as food contact material, these regulations were based on the Plastic Waste Management (Amendment) Rules 2021 notified in September’21 and recommendations of the FSSAI Scientific Panel on packaging material.

FSSAI has stated that it has been decided to operationalise the provision of these regulations from January 18, 2022, to allow the FBOs to make use of recycled plastics as food contact material.

“Accordingly, the approved guidelines for recycling of post consumer PET for food contact applications and acceptance criteria for recycled PET resin for food contact applications is also made effective for implementation,” read FSSAI’s statement in this regard. The guidelines pertain to the recycling process/operation of transforming post consumer PET bottles used for food packaging into food grade recycled PET resins suitable for making bottles and packaging material for bottling or packaging and its testing. The guidelines also cover the acceptance criteria for using food grade recycled PET resin material in bottling or packaging operations.
