OMV Launches Austria’s Largest Green Hydrogen Plant at Schwechat
A Major Milestone in Austria’s Energy Transition
OMV, Austria’s leading energy and petrochemical company, has officially launched the country’s largest green hydrogen plant. Located at the Schwechat refinery near Vienna, the facility marks a significant step in Austria’s transition toward renewable energy and climate neutrality.
The 10-megawatt (MW) plant, now operational, is OMV’s first commercial-scale green hydrogen project. It represents a €25 million investment into the future of sustainable fuels and chemicals. PET-Bottle Recycling
Green Hydrogen Production Reaches New Heights
With the capacity to produce up to 1,500 tons of green hydrogen per year, this facility sets a national benchmark. OMV plans to use the output to manufacture more sustainable products, including:
- Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF)
- Renewable Diesel (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil, or HVO)
- Low-emission petrochemical feedstocks PET-Bottle Recycling
This use of green hydrogen in refining and fuel production aligns with European Union targets for reducing dependence on fossil fuels and advancing climate goals.
Powered by 100% Renewable Energy
At the core of the Schwechat plant lies a Polymer Electrolyte Membrane (PEM) electrolyzer, also known as a Proton Exchange Membrane electrolyzer. This cutting-edge technology splits water molecules into hydrogen and oxygen using electricity derived solely from renewable sources, including:
- Wind Power
- Hydropower
- Photovoltaic Solar Energy
Unlike traditional hydrogen production, which relies on natural gas and emits significant carbon dioxide (CO₂), this method generates zero emissions during the process.
Environmental Impact: Up to 15,000 Tons of CO₂ Saved Annually
According to the European Union’s Renewable Energy Directive, the new plant can save up to 15,000 metric tons of CO₂ emissions each year. To put that in perspective, it’s equivalent to the carbon footprint of around 2,000 average EU citizens annually, based on the 2024 per capita average of 7.5 tons. PET-Bottle Recycling
This substantial reduction underscores green hydrogen’s potential as a game-changing solution in the global effort to combat climate change.
“With the start-up of Austria’s largest electrolysis plant, we are re-inventing how essentials we use in everyday life are produced sustainably,” said Martijn van Koten, OMV board member responsible for Fuels, Feedstock & Chemicals. “Green hydrogen is at the heart of this transformation.”
Certified for Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin (RFNBOs)
One of the key strengths of the new plant is its certification for producing Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin (RFNBOs). This classification is vital under EU climate regulations and enhances the plant’s strategic importance in developing low-carbon fuels across Europe. PET-Bottle Recycling
The RFNBO designation ensures that the hydrogen generated is not only emission-free but also produced using electricity from certified renewable sources.
How PEM Electrolysis Works
To better understand how this plant functions, here’s a simplified look at PEM electrolysis:
- Electricity from renewable sources is used to power the electrolyzer.
- Water (H₂O) is split into hydrogen (H₂) and oxygen (O₂).
- At the anode, water molecules release oxygen and positively charged hydrogen ions (protons).
- These protons pass through the PEM.
- At the cathode, they combine with electrons to form hydrogen gas.
This method is not only efficient but scalable, making it ideal for future expansions and industrial applications. PET-Bottle Recycling
A Cornerstone of OMV’s Decarbonization Strategy
OMV has made clear its ambition to become net-zero by 2050, and the Schwechat hydrogen plant plays a crucial role in that plan. The company’s broader sustainability strategy includes investments in:
- Geothermal energy
- Chemical recycling
- Circular economy solutions
By integrating green hydrogen into its refining operations, OMV is reshaping its value chain to meet both environmental and market demands for cleaner energy.
Supporting a Sustainable Aviation Future
One of the most compelling applications for green hydrogen is in sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). As air travel continues to rebound globally, airlines and governments are under increasing pressure to decarbonize. PET-Bottle Recycling
By supplying hydrogen-based feedstocks for SAF, OMV positions itself as a key enabler in the aviation sector’s journey toward net-zero emissions.
Looking Ahead: A Model for Green Industry in Europe
OMV’s green hydrogen initiative at Schwechat serves as a powerful model for other countries and companies across Europe. It combines:
- Cutting-edge renewable technology
- Large-scale industrial application
- Clear climate benefits
- Strategic alignment with EU policies
As the European Union ramps up its Green Deal ambitions and moves toward a low-carbon economy, projects like this underscore the role of hydrogen as a clean, flexible energy carrier for the future. PET-Bottle Recycling
? Summary: Why This Matters

SK Chemicals Debuts Complete Automotive Recycling Solutions at 2025 ESG∙Net-Zero Expo
Turning end-of-life car parts into new high-performance materials, SK Chemicals leads the charge in circular automotive innovation.
A Bold Step Toward a Greener Auto Industry
SK Chemicals unveiled its groundbreaking automotive recycling technologies at the 2025 Auto Parts Industry ESG∙Net-Zero Expo, held March 23–25 at the aT Center in Yangjae-dong, Seoul. The event, co-hosted by Hyundai Motor Company, Kia Corporation, and key government bodies, highlighted innovations aligned with carbon neutrality and sustainable ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) practices. PET-Bottle Recycling
Introducing the “Car-to-Car Closed-Loop Solution”
One of the expo’s standout innovations was SK Chemicals’ “Car-to-Car Closed-Loop Solution.” This system tackles the entire vehicle lifecycle: from the collection of end-of-life automotive components to their conversion into high-quality raw materials and reuse in new vehicles.
A key example was the recycling of used airbags. SK Chemicals showcased how these can be chemically broken down and re-manufactured into new airbags—completing a closed loop within the automotive supply chain.
What Is Closed-Loop Recycling?
Unlike conventional mechanical recycling—which often degrades plastic quality—closed-loop chemical recycling restores plastic waste to its original molecular form. Through depolymerization, discarded automotive plastics are broken down and rebuilt into virgin-quality materials, enabling endless reuse without performance loss.
This high-performance output makes the technology perfect for industries like automotive and electronics, where precision and durability are non-negotiable. PET-Bottle Recycling
