Crude Oil Prices Trend

Forecasts for crude oil prices and quantities in 2025 indicate a challenging landscape influenced by various economic factors

The International Energy Agency (IEA) projects global oil demand growth to be under one million barrels per day, a significant reduction compared to the two million barrels per day increase seen in 2023[1]. This subdued demand is primarily attributed to ongoing economic concerns, particularly regarding China’s recovery and its impact on global consumption patterns.

In terms of pricing, analysts are predicting Brent crude oil prices to average around $74 per barrel throughout 2025, with some estimates ranging from $70 to $76 per barrel[2][4]. The Commonwealth Bank of Australia expects prices to drop further to $70 per barrel due to increased production from non-OPEC+ countries outpacing demand growth[1]. Additionally, the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) anticipates a rise in global oil production by approximately 1.6 million barrels per day, predominantly from non-OPEC nations such as the U.S., Canada, and Brazil[7]. PET Flakes
Market dynamics suggest that while OPEC+ may attempt to manage supply through production cuts, the overall market is likely to experience a surplus due to robust output from non-member countries[4][6]. This situation could lead to continued pressure on prices, especially if demand does not rebound as anticipated. Thus, 2025 is shaping up to be a year of cautious optimism tempered by significant uncertainties in both supply and demand.

LSU Researchers Create Low-Cost Method to Recycle Plastic

LSU researchers have created a new, low-cost way to break down plastic, a potential Kerry Dooleybreakthrough that could save billions of dollars and eliminate billions of tons of plastic pollution.

“Getting plastics to the recycling plant is only half the battle. The other half is reusing that plastic waste to create new products,” said James Dorman, program manger with the U.S. Department of Energy and former LSU Chemical Engineering professor. “Some estimates show as much as 95 percent of plastics in the U.S. ends up in landfills and incinerators. Our process breaks down commercial plastics, including polystyrene and high- and low-density polyethylene, so recycled material can be seamlessly integrated into new products.”  PET Flakes

Dorman and LSU Chemical Engineering Professor Kerry Dooley use electromagnetic induction heating along with special magnetic materials and catalysts to break down different types of plastic.

Electromagnetic waves melt the plastics from the inside out, which requires far less energy. Dorman and Dooley’s process also produces only small amounts of unwanted byproducts such as methane, a powerful greenhouse gas, unlike conventional recycling. The conventional method of melting plastic waste, pyrolysis, requires high temperatures and produces gases like carbon dioxide and hydrogen.

Dorman and Dooley’s method works at lower temperatures and offers more precise control of the breakdown process. Their method can be tailored to handle food residues and other contaminants that help limit plastics recycling. For example, recyclers commonly send plastic containers that still contain food – yogurt for example – to the landfill because the residue taints the recycled material.  PET Flakes

Biopolymers from Waste: Circular Biocarbon’s Innovative Biorefineries

The Circular Biocarbon project has launched its first biorefinery in Zaragoza, Spain, and is building a second in Sesto San Giovanni, Italy. These facilities transform sewage sludge and organic municipal waste—such as food scraps and grass clippings—into high-value products like biopolymers (PHA), minerals (struvite), biofertilizers, and green graphene.

The Zaragoza biorefinery, inaugurated last year, is managed by Urbaser in collaboration with the Municipality of Zaragoza. It integrates innovative waste treatment technologies to enhance waste management in the region.

The second plant, managed by Italy’s CAP group, will test the process with different waste systems and industrial ecosystems. This multi-site approach, involving Italian companies and universities, enables the Circular Biocarbon project to optimize biorefinery performance across varied environments.  PET Flakes

These biorefineries exemplify circular economy principles, turning organic waste into sustainable resources while reducing environmental impact.

Redefining Display Technology for Automotive Windshields

Eastman, Covestro, and Ceres showcase advanced holographic transparent displays at CES 2025 in Las Vegas.

Head-up displays (HUDs) show useful information, such as speed and turn-by-turn directions, on the lower part of the windshield, where it can be seen without the driver needing to take his or her eyes off the road.

Automakers and their suppliers are looking for advanced solutions for next-generation HUDs to increase user experience and safety. PET Flakes

German polymer materials manufacturer Covestro, US specialty materials company Eastman, and Scotland’s Ceres Holographics, a provider of holographic optical elements for displays, have joined forces to redefine such displays. The partners signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to explore the commercial production of the cutting-edge Holographic In-Plan Transparent Display (HIPTD) — a laminated hologram technology that allows multiple head-up displays on a single windshield.

Technology overcomes limitations of traditional HUD systems

The new displays overcome the performance, size, and geometric limitations of traditional HUD systems, enabling the practical and scalable implementation of multiple displays in one windshield and elsewhere in side-light glazing. Proof of concepts developed with OEMs will be showcased at CES 2025 in Las Vegas from Jan. 7 to 10.  PET Flakes

What is PET Flakes?

PET flakes, derived from recycled Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) plastic bottles, are a sustainable and versatile raw material widely used in manufacturing. These flakes are produced through a meticulous process involving collection, cleaning, shredding, and reprocessing of post-consumer PET bottles, ensuring their utility in diverse applications. PET flakes are valued for their exceptional durability, lightweight nature, and ability to be molded into various shapes, making them an essential component in creating fibers, sheets, containers, and packaging materials. Additionally, their contribution to environmental conservation by reducing plastic waste and promoting recycling underscores their importance in fostering sustainable development.  PET Flakes

Talent Talk: Why I’m Optimistic About US Manufacturing in 2025

Consider this leading indicator: New factory construction has tripled in the last three to four years.

Previously, we looked at how manufacturing and plastics fared in 2024. To say that the industry treaded water would be putting a positive spin on the facts. But the windshield is much bigger than the rearview mirror and there are a lot of reasons to be optimistic about 2025 and beyond.  PET Flakes

Let’s start with investment. Talent Talk first noted the rapid acceleration of US manufacturing construction in July 2023. At that time, we reported that the pace of building new factories had more than doubled over the span of just about one year.

Factory construction forges ahead despite high interest rates

In the year and a half since then, despite continued high interest rates and soft demand, we are up another 21%. We are building factories at three times the rate we did three to four years ago.

This investment, impressive as it is, does not include the cost of production machinery and equipment, but because construction spending comes first, it is a great leading indicator of the direction and pace of future manufacturing growth. PET Flakes

Public spending carries a cost

Much of this investment is coming from federal government spending, which has not happened without a downside: It contributes to high interest rates and ballooning national debt.
