-KRICT comes in as a new leading player in the monopolized bio-polycarbonate market

Potential alternative for petroleum polycarbonate containing environmental hormone sources

NATIONAL RESEARCH COUNCIL OF SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY

The Korea Research Institute of Chemical Technology(KRICT) developed a bio-polycarbonate which has been monopolized by Japan, and opened up the possibility of bio-polycarbonate commercialization.

Bio-polycarbonate is an eco-friendly bio-plastic that can replace conventional polycarbonate, which contains the environmental hormone causing substance, bisphenol A(BPA). Until now, Mitsubishi Chemical Corp. of Japan is the only one who has successfully commercialized producing bio-polycarbonate.

-TRIAL OF ‘TAG AND TRACE’ RECYCLING TECHNOLOGY LAUNCHED

A trial to test a new ‘tag and trace’ recycling technology has been launched today (28 October).

The trial will measure the viability of Polytag – a recycling technology platform that allows brands to ‘tag’ their packaging with a unique PAC code at the point of manufacture and then ‘trace’ the packaging so that it can be isolated and reprocessed in batches of identical grade and colour plastic. -Swedish Recycling Mill creates a high-tech way to recycle old clothes

Thanks to a Swedish recycling mill, old clothes can be reprocessed via a new method.

About 80 billion items of clothing are produced globally every year and it requires about 20,000 litres of water to make 1kg of cotton. These number are allegedly enough to make only one T-shirt and a pair of jeans.Petrochemical Crude Oil BioPackaging

The Swedish recycling mill however uses about 80% less water to make its cotton. Through the new system, used cotton fabrics are separated and also ‘de-dyed’ in order to remove colour before they are turned into a pulp called circulose, which is dried into sheets.

These sheets are further sold to textile companies in order to make thread.

-Optimistic outlook at Cefic chemical convention despite current weak conditions

Despite a backdrop of economic tension and fractious global trade relations, a look at how chemistry will improve the world in the future was presented at the closing speeches of the European chemistry council (Cefic) annual Chemical Convention on Friday.

Among issues discussed was how Europe can work toward sustainability, with the EU Commission’s vice president for jobs, growth, investment and competitiveness Jyrki Katainen. Petrochemical Crude Oil BioPackaging

“Let’s get this straight –  the European Commission has not staged a war against plastics. Plastics render essential service to people. Plastics materials into their homes and their cars, true numbers indicate that plastic contributes to save energy and carbon dioxide emissions,” he said.
