German chemicals giant BASF said operating income saw a better-than-expected gain during the fourth quarter, boding well for its upcoming dividend policy review, said the company.
Quarterly earnings before interest and tax, adjusted for one-off items, rose 32% to 1.11 billion euros (USD1.35 billion), beating market consensus and slightly above the highest analyst estimate, BASF said in an unscheduled statement on Wednesday, citing preliminary figures.
Quarterly sales increased by 8% to 15.9 billion euros as higher volumes and product prices outweighed the effect of weaker overseas currencies.
“The BASF Group’s operating business performed better than expected in the fourth quarter of 2020,” the company said in a statement.
The company expects to post an EBIT loss in the full year of 2020, mainly due to the non-cash-effective impairments and provisions for restructuring in the third quarter of last year.
Sustainable packaging expert Robert Lilienfeld reacts to a scientific opinion on biodegradable plastics published by The European Commission (EC).
Some of you may remember that in February of last year I wrote a piece for PlasticsToday entitled Top Eight Things to Know about Biodegradable Packaging. It stated that biodegradable plastics were a complex undertaking that would not be the silver bullet that many marketers and packaging designers were hoping they would become.
Well, about a month ago the European Commission (EC) published the Scientific Opinion on the Biodegradability of Plastics in the Open Environment.
Because of all the news relating to the pandemic and politics during this time, the opinion has received very little attention. This is too bad, because it will set the direction of both regulatory and business activity in Europe, and therefore in North America as well (only a little bit later). A huge industry has developed around the use of wood pellets as a source of energy, and wood pulp–based beverage “bottles” are being promoted as an eco-friendly alternative to plastics. In fact, these initiatives may be doing more environmental harm than good.
It wasn’t that long ago when people used wood to build their cooking fires and heat their homes on cold winter nights.Petrochemical LLDPE GreenHydrogen
The 20th century brought us better, cleaner ways than burning wood, such as natural gas and oil, even some types of coal. So why is there a global push to return to burning wood as a source of energy? It seems that the Kyoto Protocol signed in 1997 provided a loophole for the burning of forest biomass as a carbon-neutral “renewable energy source” equal to wind and solar.
As 2021 gets underway, Europe’s new plastics tax is creating a demand boost for recycled plastics in the region, while in Asia, recyclers are expected to struggle with bearish virgin markets and soaring freight costs at least in the first half of the year. By Benjamin Brooks, Sarah Schneider, Miranda Zhang and Hui Heng Petrochemical LLDPE GreenHydrogen
After a tumultuous 2020 for the global recycled plastics markets that saw production margins pressured and bearish virgin prices causing buyers to shun recycled plastics, the first half of 2021 may see a step change, at least in Europe and the US, in reaction to newly signed legislation that may provide an impetus to increased demand.
In the Asian markets, a combination of uneconomic export opportunities and expected low virgin prices well into H1 2021 will likely mean recycled plastics markets will continue to struggle, though upcoming high-specification recycling plants, delayed from 2020, may provide a lifeline and a new impetus to high-specification recycled plastics in the region.
Interview with Mr Hasan Tepe – CEO at Tepar Filament Yarns Corp
Tepar has been established in 1992 as an exporting company for cotton and textile wastes for European banknotes. With the booming of denim cut and saw industry, a tremendous denim fabric clipping has been accumulated. Petrochemical LLDPE GreenHydrogen
The entrepreneurship of Tepar owners has turned this waste denim clipping into extremely high value-added products such as banknotes, high-security paper and bleached absorbing cotton.
- Please let us know more details about Tepar Filament Company, history and success story.
I am pleased to inform you that, today Tepar is the leading functional yarn texturizer from 5 den up to 8000 Denier (ATY and DTY) of Turkey. Despite the fact that Tepar has been established only 29 years ago, with our vision and enthusiasm for innovation we have reached a dominant position in functional filament yarns for active sports, home textile, Athleisure, Medical as well as military applications.
Funded by some of the world’s biggest oil and chemicals companies, Renew Oceans has failed to meet its goal of keeping plastic waste in the Ganges River from entering the ocean surrounding India.Petrochemical LLDPE GreenHydrogen
The plastics industry has devoted tremendous resources to trying to solve the plastic waste challenge, even if anti-plastic activists are loath to recognize the efforts. Sometimes, though, the industry gives itself a black eye, as is seemingly the case with Renew Oceans. Funded by some of the world’s biggest oil and chemicals companies, Renew Oceans has failed to meet its intended goal of keeping plastic waste in the Ganges River from entering the ocean surrounding India.
Canadian machinery maker Husky Injection Molding Systems has launched the UltraShot Injection System, a next generation melt delivery and control system that is said to eliminate the deficiencies of traditional injection moulding.
“With the UltraShot Injection System, we are re-engineering the injection moulding process. We are breaking down the barriers of traditional injection moulding processes in order to achieve higher levels of capability, control and overall part design freedom. The UltraShot Injection System is a game changer and provides better control than anything else in the industry. Petrochemical LLDPE GreenHydrogen
This approach is especially important now with massive, increased demand and speed-to-market, especially in the medical market, for example, where production risks and scalability are critical,” said John Galt, President/CEO, Husky.
Recent tests have shown that lightweight carbon-fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) is strong enough to replace metal in upper-stage rocket structures. This is an important milestone in Europe for the development of a prototype of a highly optimised ‘black’ upper stage, Phoebus, a joint initiative by MT Aerospace and ArianeGroup, funded by ESA.
The key goal of the Phoebus project is to increase launch vehicle payload performance by over two tonnes by reducing the mass of the upper stage through design and materials.
Carbon-fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) materials, or carbon composites, allow new architectures and combinations of functions otherwise not possible using metallic materials. CFRP is lightweight and dark in appearance and will be used for the cryogenic propellant tanks.Petrochemical LLDPE GreenHydrogen
PETValue Philippines has been awarded pioneer incentives by the Board of Investments (BOI) for aP2.28-billion project, the country’s first bottle-to-bottle, food-grade recycling facility.Petrochemical LLDPE GreenHydrogen
The multi-phased project is a partnership between Coca-Cola Beverages Philippines Inc. (CCBPI)– the bottling arm of Coca-Cola in the country, and Thailand-based Indorama Ventures, a global leader in packaging solutions and green technology.
PETValue will establish the most advanced and world-class technologies in the Philippines to produce more sustainable packaging innovations and to help improve the collection and recycling rates of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastic bottles.

“Only we humans make waste that nature can’t digest.” Those are the words of oceanographer Capt. Charles Moore, who discovered the Great Pacific Garbage Patch in 1997. And, of course, he’s talking about plastic.Petrochemical LLDPE GreenHydrogen
Most people reading this will probably have something made of plastic within their line of sight. This material is ubiquitous: we’re now producing more than 300 million tons (272 metric tons) of plastic a year, and roughly half of that is intended for single-use — meaning that it’s discarded immediately after it has served its purpose. This has led to a mounting problem of plastic waste going to landfills, and some of this waste gets blown off course and makes its way into rivers and ultimately the sea. In fact, around 8 million tons (7.2 million metric tons) of plastic pollution enters the ocean every year, where it entangles marine life, pollutes coral reefs and ultimately — subjected to degradation by water, wind and sun — breaks apart into trillions of tiny microplastic pieces.
