-BASF Q4 sales expected to rise on higher volumes, prices

German chemicals giant BASF said operating income saw a better-than-expected gain during the fourth quarter, boding well for its upcoming dividend policy review, said the company.

Quarterly earnings before interest and tax, adjusted for one-off items, rose 32% to 1.11 billion euros (USD1.35 billion), beating market consensus and slightly above the highest analyst estimate, BASF said in an unscheduled statement on Wednesday, citing preliminary figures.

Quarterly sales increased by 8% to 15.9 billion euros as higher volumes and product prices outweighed the effect of weaker overseas currencies.

“The BASF Group’s operating business performed better than expected in the fourth quarter of 2020,” the company said in a statement.

The company expects to post an EBIT loss in the full year of 2020, mainly due to the non-cash-effective impairments and provisions for restructuring in the third quarter of last year.

After a tumultuous 2020 for the global recycled plastics markets that saw production margins pressured and bearish virgin prices causing buyers to shun recycled plastics, the first half of 2021 may see a step change, at least in Europe and the US, in reaction to newly signed legislation that may provide an impetus to increased demand.

In the Asian markets, a combination of uneconomic export opportunities and expected low virgin prices well into H1 2021 will likely mean recycled plastics markets will continue to struggle, though upcoming high-specification recycling plants, delayed from 2020, may provide a lifeline and a new impetus to high-specification recycled plastics in the region.

Recent tests have shown that lightweight carbon-fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) is strong enough to replace metal in upper-stage rocket structures. Most people reading this will probably have something made of plastic within their line of sight. This material is ubiquitous: we’re now producing more than 300 million tons (272 metric tons) of plastic a year, and roughly half of that is intended for single-use — meaning that it’s discarded immediately after it has served its purpose.
