An escalating dispute between Greece and Turkey over energy resources in the eastern Mediterranean is fast becoming militarized, raising the risks of a clash among NATO allies.
Foreign Minister Heiko Maas of Germany, who visited Greece and Turkey this week urging dialogue, warned both governments against further military escalation. “Fire is being played with and any small spark could lead to catastrophe,” he said on Tuesday.
As Germany tries to mediate, four of its fellow E.U. members, France, Greece, Cyprus and Italy, are engaged in military exercises involving ships and planes off the Cypriot coast. Their purpose, they say, is to deter Turkey from further energy exploration in disputed waters, something it has been doing for several weeks with vessels guarded by warships and jet fighters.

Chemetry’s eShuttle technology produces high-purity ethylene dichloride (EDC), a chemical used primarily for PVC production, at a significant reduction in power consumption and production costs compared with existing techniques.
Chemetry, a business of clean technology innovation company Calera Corp., and Braskem, a leading producer of thermoplastic resins in the Americas based in Sao Paulo, Brazil, announced the construction of a demonstration plant in Brazil using Chemetry’s eShuttle technology for the production of ethylene dichloride (EDC).
Founded 12 years ago, Chemetry is dedicated to the development of environmentally and economically sustainable chemical processes. EShuttle EDC employs a unique metal halide ion process to produce high-purity EDC, a commodity chemical used primarily for PVC production, without the generation of chlorine gas.

This quarterly report represents an earnings surprise of 16.39%. A quarter ago, it was expected that this oil refiner and chemical company would post earnings of USDUSD.36 per share when it actually produced earnings of USD1.52, delivering a surprise of 11.76%.

LyondellBasell, which belongs to the Zacks Chemical – Diversified industry, posted revenues of USD5.55 billion for the quarter ended June 2020, missing the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 3.98%. One of the most complex engineering challenges when making membranes so thin is to maintain integrity in the uniformity of the pores, which required drilling atomically precise holes in a one-atom thick sheet of carbon atoms. “A single large hole can cause high leakage and compromise membrane performance,” said Piran Kidambi, assistant professor of chemical and biomolecular engineering.
“How do you poke trillions of holes between the size of 0.3 and 0.6 nanometers over a square centimeter of material that is just one-atom thick? That is 3 angstroms tolerance using processes that are scalable and roll-to-roll manufacturing compatible,” Kidambi said. An angstrom is one ten-billionth of a meter.

US chemical production is rebounding, according to the ACC’s US Chemical Production Regional Index (US CPRI). The figure, a three-month moving average (3MMA), increased 0.8% in July after dropping 2.0% in May and 1.6% in June, reported Chemweek.
Segments contributing to the increase included plastic resins, chlor-alkali, organic chemicals, industrial gases, synthetic dyes and pigments, consumer products, and fertilizers, says ACC. Production continued to decline in adhesives, coatings, other specialty chemicals, crop protection, synthetic rubber, and manufactured fibers.
