-Rising Tensions Between Turkey and Greece Divide E.U. Leaders

An escalating dispute between Greece and Turkey over energy resources in the eastern Mediterranean is fast becoming militarized, raising the risks of a clash among NATO allies.

Foreign Minister Heiko Maas of Germany, who visited Greece and Turkey this week urging dialogue, warned both governments against further military escalation. “Fire is being played with and any small spark could lead to catastrophe,” he said on Tuesday.

As Germany tries to mediate, four of its fellow E.U. members, France, Greece, Cyprus and Italy, are engaged in military exercises involving ships and planes off the Cypriot coast. Their purpose, they say, is to deter Turkey from further energy exploration in disputed waters, something it has been doing for several weeks with vessels guarded by warships and jet fighters.

-Braskem and Chemetry to Build EDC Plant Based on Breakthrough Technology

Chemetry’s eShuttle technology produces high-purity ethylene dichloride (EDC), a chemical used primarily for PVC production, at a significant reduction in power consumption and production costs compared with existing techniques.

Chemetry, a business of clean technology innovation company Calera Corp., and Braskem, a leading producer of thermoplastic resins in the Americas based in Sao Paulo, Brazil, announced the construction of a demonstration plant in Brazil using Chemetry’s eShuttle technology for the production of ethylene dichloride (EDC).

Founded 12 years ago, Chemetry is dedicated to the development of environmentally and economically sustainable chemical processes. EShuttle EDC employs a unique metal halide ion process to produce high-purity EDC, a commodity chemical used primarily for PVC production, without the generation of chlorine gas.

-LyondellBasell beats Q2 earnings estimates

LyondellBasell came out with quarterly earnings of USD0.71 per share, beating the Zacks Consensus Estimate of USD0.61 per share. This compares to earnings of USD2.75 per share a year ago. These figures are adjusted for non-recurring items, as per ZACKS.

This quarterly report represents an earnings surprise of 16.39%. A quarter ago, it was expected that this oil refiner and chemical company would post earnings of USDUSD.36 per share when it actually produced earnings of USD1.52, delivering a surprise of 11.76%.

Over the last four quarters, the company has surpassed consensus EPS estimates two times.Petrochemicals Nylon66 Graphene PET

LyondellBasell, which belongs to the Zacks Chemical – Diversified industry, posted revenues of USD5.55 billion for the quarter ended June 2020, missing the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 3.98%. This compares to year-ago revenues of USD9.05 billion. The company has not been able to beat consensus revenue estimates over the last four quarters.

-Researchers develop enhanced graphene sieve that could advance clean water efforts

Vanderbilt engineers recently designed a simple defect-sealing technique to correct variations in pore size in graphene membranes. The researchers reported a breakthrough in scalable fabrication of graphene membranes with a sealing technology that corrects variations in the pore size so they remain small enough to trap salt ions and small molecules but allow water to pass. Petrochemicals Nylon66 Graphene PET

One of the most complex engineering challenges when making membranes so thin is to maintain integrity in the uniformity of the pores, which required drilling atomically precise holes in a one-atom thick sheet of carbon atoms. “A single large hole can cause high leakage and compromise membrane performance,” said Piran Kidambi, assistant professor of chemical and biomolecular engineering.

“How do you poke trillions of holes between the size of 0.3 and 0.6 nanometers over a square centimeter of material that is just one-atom thick? That is 3 angstroms tolerance using processes that are scalable and roll-to-roll manufacturing compatible,” Kidambi said. An angstrom is one ten-billionth of a meter.

-Polymers and Polymerization Reactions

Prior to the early 1920’s, chemists doubted the existence of molecules having molecular weights greater than a few thousand. This limiting view was challenged by Hermann Staudinger, a German chemist with experience in studying natural compounds such as rubber and cellulose. Petrochemicals Nylon66 Graphene PET

In contrast to the prevailing rationalization of these substances as aggregates of small molecules, Staudinger proposed they were made up of macromolecules composed of 10,000 or more atoms.

He formulated a polymeric structure for rubber, based on a repeating isoprene unit (referred to as a monomer). For his contributions to chemistry, Staudinger received the 1953 Nobel Prize.

The terms polymer and monomer were derived from the Greek roots poly (many), mono (one) and meros (part).

Recognition that polymeric macromolecules make up many important natural materials was followed by the creation of synthetic analogs having a variety of properties.

Indeed, applications of these materials as fibers, flexible films, adhesives, resistant paints and tough but light solids have transformed modern society. Some important examples of these substances are discussed in the following sections.

-US chemical production up in July, says ACC

US chemical production is rebounding, according to the ACC’s US Chemical Production Regional Index (US CPRI). The figure, a three-month moving average (3MMA), increased 0.8% in July after dropping 2.0% in May and 1.6% in June, reported Chemweek.

Segments contributing to the increase included plastic resins, chlor-alkali, organic chemicals, industrial gases, synthetic dyes and pigments, consumer products, and fertilizers, says ACC. Production continued to decline in adhesives, coatings, other specialty chemicals, crop protection, synthetic rubber, and manufactured fibers.

ACC notes that goods manufacturing continued a broad-based recovery in July, with overall factory activity up 4.9% on a 3MMA basis.Petrochemicals Nylon66 Graphene PET

-The European recycling landscape—the quiet before the storm?

Before plastics recycling in Europe can scale up, the industry needs to overcome sizable obstacles. Our survey helps illustrate what companies can do to achieve their aspirations.

Plastics recycling in Europe is expected to grow significantly in the next five to ten years, particularly in response to increased pressure from regulators and consumers. Governments and major brands are continuously discussing and refining targets to reduce waste and improve the circularity of the plastics value chain. And while players in the chemicals industry aspire to expand access to recycling, adopt new technologies, and grow sustainability efforts, many existing European recyclers that have pursued these goals for years have made little progress.

-Robust Processor Demand and Hurricane Threat Impact Spot Market Prices

Strong demand and substantial completed volumes in the spot resin markets last week led to inevitable rising prices as supplies thinned.

Two major storms developing in the Gulf of Mexico prompted another wave of resin buying and price hikes.Petrochemicals Nylon66 Graphene PET

Strong demand and substantial completed volumes in the spot resin markets last week led to inevitable rising prices as supplies thinned, reports the PlasticsExchange in its Market Update.

The week began with producers issuing a new nickel increase for September polyethylene (PE) contracts, lending support to the $0.05/lb increase pending for August, which will probably be implemented.

In addition to the imminent August cost-push polypropylene (PP) increase, which is hovering at $0.04/lb, another major producer joined the $0.03/lb hike for September PP contracts, which is in addition to any change in monomer costs.

The new nominations sent buyers to the spot market seeking to procure additional resin at still fairly good prices.

-Proposed plastic packaging tax ‘falls short’ says TIPA

Sustainable alternatives to conventional plastic should be exempt from the UK’s new plastic packaging tax, according to a flexible compostable packaging producer.

Sustainable alternatives to conventional plastic should be exempt from the UK’s new plastic packaging tax, according to a flexible compostable packaging producer.

Writing to the UK Treasury, TIPA said: “Traditional recycling alone is failing to deal with the millions of tonnes of plastic detritus on our planet and there is no foreseeable change to this without systematic change in the materials we employ, including compostables.”

The company’s call for action was backed by the Bio-based and Biodegradable Industries Association (BBIA), a UK trade body, and came as the government’s Plastic Packaging Tax consultation closes.Petrochemicals Nylon66 Graphene PET
