-February contract price of MEG in Europe increased by EUR40 per ton

The contract price of monoethylene glycol (MEG) for February in Europe has been finally agreed at EUR730 per tonne, up EUR40 per tonne from the previous month, ICIS reported .

The contract price for the material for the February shipments has been approved on FD NWE delivery terms (with delivery to Northwest Europe).

The contract price of MEG for the current month was finally agreed, as the necessary configuration was achieved to approve the contract price – at least 2 producers / suppliers and 2 buyers / consumers at the beginning of February.

Commodity quotes rose in February after ethylene contract price  roseby EUR70 per ton. Upstream market participants expected prices to rise in February, at least on the back of higher naphtha quotes compared to the previous month. The balance of supply and demand for ethylene was also tense.

The January contract price of MEG in Europe  increased by EUR100 per tonne from December level to EUR690 per tonne, FD NWE.

MEG, along with terephthalic acid (TPA), is one of the main components for PET production.

-Two PET lines of Spanish Novapet operate at reduced capacity utilization due to bad weather conditions

The Spanish company Novapet, a large European producer of polyethylene terephthalate (PET), continues to keep the capacity utilization of two lines of the PET plant in Barbastro (Barbastro, Spain) at a reduced level as a precaution due to adverse weather conditions. reported by Polymerupdate .

So, on January 9 this year, the company had to reduce the load on two lines of this enterprise with a capacity of 230 thousand tons of PET per year due to severe weather, as well as due to the delay in the arrival of consignments of raw materials due to logistical difficulties caused by snowfall. In total, Novapet operates three lines at this plant with a capacity of 130 thousand tons, 100 thousand tons and 30 thousand tons of PET per year.

Earlier it was noted that last year Novapet closed the PET line in Barbastro with a capacity of 100 thousand tons per year for a scheduled 40-50-day repair in October – November.

According to MRC ‘s ScanPlast , in Russia the total estimated PET consumption in December amounted to 71.83 thousand tons, which is 8% higher than the consumption indicator for the same month in 2019. In total, in 2020, the volume of PET consumption in all sectors (casting, threads / fibers, films) decreased by 17% compared to the level of 2019 and amounted to 717.31 thousand tons.

-WORLD’S ‘MOST SUSTAINABLE’ GLASS BOTTLE HAS JUST BEEN INVENTED

A company in Derrylin, Northern Ireland has set out on a mission to create “the world’s most sustainable glass bottle”.

Compared to its packaging counterparts, glass is one of the more sustainable solutions. Unlike plastic, glass can be recycled indefinitely in a closed-loop cycle, and is predominantly made of abundant, natural raw material like sand and cullets (waste glass).  Plastic BioPolymers PET Polyolefins

However, the production process behind the creation of glass has been criticised for its energy usage. One manufacturer in Northern Ireland has levelled up minimising carbon emissions in the glass-making process.

A BIOFUEL FUTURE FOR GLASS?

Encirc has successfully managed to make bottles using renewable biofuels which the manufacturer says have ultra-low carbon emissions.

The trial paints a “very bright and sustainable future” for the industry, says Fiacre O’Donnell, head of sustainability at Encirc’s parent company, Vidrala.

-AmSty raises February PS prices

Americas Styrenics (AmSty; Woodlands, Texas), a 50/50 joint venture of CPChem and Trinseo, says it increased prices for all grades of polystyrene (PS) by US0.03 per pound, effective 1 February 2021. Plastic BioPolymers PET Polyolefins

The price rise supersedes all other previously announced price increases, it says.

No reason for the increase was given by the PS and styrene producer.

As MRC reported earlier, with an end goal of keeping polystyrene products out of landfills through an innovative circular recycling process, AmSty has recently announced its commitment that all products designed for foodservice and food packaging applications will contain 25 percent recycled content by 2030.

-EMEA: The week ahead in petrochemicals

Converters face difficulties amid surging polyethylene spot and contract prices, demand for virgin PET starts to ease, and tightness persists in some polymer markets. Plastic BioPolymers PET Polyolefins

Olefins

European ethylene spot price differentials against the industry-settled contract price over the contract price are expected to widen further into discount territory in February on further import arrivals from the US. Ethylene inland and coastal cargo, prices which were seen at an unusual premium over the contract flipped back into discount territory this week to be assessed at a 2% discount.

MEG Supply remains tight despite the restart of Ineos’s Dormagen cracker — a key ethylene oxide supplier. Spot prices going into March were expected to reflect this despite the arrival of Asian imports at the end of February and beginning of March.

Polymers

The recent surge in European polyethylene spot and contract prices, which is expected to intensify further in February, could see some converters struggle to pass costs through to the final customer, placing their finances under severe pressure. Producers announced their intention to lift LDPE prices in February by Eur200-250/mt ($241-$301) as a minimum. Plastic BioPolymers PET Polyolefins

European PVC participants will continue to follow the developments around the supply tightness caused by outages and recent force majeure announced by KemOne. The market will continue to watch developments in the Turkish PVC market and product spot availability in NWE.

-A solution to plastic pollution: circular economy

The dire state of the world’s oceans can no longer be ignored. Discarded plastic waste — particularly single-use plastic — is putting marine life at risk.

It’s not only big chunks of plastic and bags that pose a danger: plastic exposed to salt water and ultraviolet solar rays can fragment into minuscule microplastics that are easily ingested by birds, fish and simple marine life forms, eventually leaching chemicals into the food chain. Plastic BioPolymers PET Polyolefins

Businesses, consumers and investors are starting to pay attention — and it’s about time. Without a practical and expedient approach for tackling discarded plastic, waste management systems will become overwhelmed.
