-PBT market to keep buoyant around LNY bolstered by cost
Prices of PBT industrial chain greatly climbed up ahead of Spring Festival holiday. Price of PBT chip, POY50D and DTY50D has rose by 3,350yuan/mt, 4,000yuan/mt and 4,200yuan/mt to 13,000yuan/mt, 15,000yuan/mt and 18,000yuan/mt respectively since Jan, with increment at 34.7%, 36.4% and 30.4% respectively.
Hiking PBT price was mainly attributed to the following major 2 reasons:
The route was soaring BDO price amid short supply. Price of BDO increased by 3,200yuan/mt or 25% to 15,950yuan/mt since Jan. As a result, polymer feeding cost ascended by 1,779yuan/mt or 20% to 10,478yuan/mt. Increment of another feedstock, PTA, was relatively smaller, up by 365yuan/mt or 10% to 3,960yuan/mt.
Supply of BDO was short in Jan-Feb. Spandex market ran at around 95% of capacity. As a result, demand for BDO was strong from PTMEG market. Operating rate of PTMEG plants was above 96%. PBAT, which is a downstream product of BDO, ran at high capacity amid tight supply benefited by policy. Overall demand for BDO was sound in Jan-Feb, while supply of BDO reduced as some units such as Blue Ridge Tunhe and Xinjiang Xinye had turnaround.
-SINOPEC Yizheng selects INVISTA P8++ PTA Technology
INVISTA’s technology and licensing group, INVISTA Performance Technologies (IPT), and China Petrochemical International Co., Ltd. (“Sinopec Yizheng”) have reached an agreement for licensing of INVISTA’s industry leading PTA P8++ technology for Sinopec Yizheng’s third PTA line. This plant will be installed in Jiangsu province, China, with an annual name-plate capacity of 3 million tonnes.
Sinopec Yizheng previously utilised IPT’s P6 PTA technology for its 450,000 te/annum second PTA line. Plastic BioPolymers PP Polyolefins

This is a further confirmation of INVISTA’s strategy of relentlessly improving its PTA technology offering, through a combination of increased scale, reduced capital and variable cost per tonne of PTA, and greater sustainability.

Polyester companies witnessed moderate market fundamental before the Lunar Chinese New Year and price climbed up amid mounting cost.
Polyester enterprises did not have inventory burden before holiday. Many plants saw pre-orders. Comprehensive stocks of PFY were flat with the corresponding period of last year and those of PSF were far lower than last year.
Most polyester products were priced marginally above the cost. By Friday, cash flow of PET fiber chip, PET bottle chip, PSF and POY150D was at 42yuan/mt, 337yuan/mt, 507yuan/mt and 217yuan/mt respectively. Plastic BioPolymers PP Polyolefins
Turnaround size of polyester fiber market apparently reduced this year before the Lunar Chinese New Year with easing pandemic and in expectation of better demand. Therefore, polyester polymerization rate was high, which is estimated to be 88%, 85% and 92% respectively in Jan-Mar.
-Australia’s largest PET recycling plant now under construction in Albury-Wodonga
Construction is now underway on a world-class recycling facility in Albury-Wodonga that will see the equivalent of around 1 billion PET plastic bottles recycled each year.
Environment Minister and Federal Member for Farrer, the Hon. Sussan Ley MP, marked the official start of construction by turning the first sod on-site at the project, which is being delivered in a joint venture between Asahi Beverages, Pact Group Holdings Ltd and Cleanaway Waste Management Ltd.
The $45 million plant – in the Nexus Precinct 10km outside the Albury CBD in NSW – is set to be fully operational by October, two months earlier than expected owing to Albury Council approving the project ahead of schedule. Excavation of the site has already started, sheds to house more than a dozen diggers have been erected and dozens of jobs will be created as construction ramps up in coming weeks.

The Union’s European Circular Economy Strategy for Plastics has set a target for all plastic packaging to be recyclable by 2030.
This means that manufacturers will have to switch away from – to use the cumbersome jargon – polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles and use instead recyclable polyethylene terephthalate (r-PET)
In recent years the problem of plastic pollution – particularly in the oceans – has never been far from the headlines. Various big name brands are already using packaging with a proportion of recyclable material, but the EU wants to make 100% recyclable – and preferably recycled – plastic mandatory.
Pressure has been mounting from consumers and environmentalists following extensive media coverage of plastic pollution, such as David Attenbrough’s Blue Planet 2.
But making packaging 100% recyclable is easier said than done, according to one Spanish company.
Carlos Enguix is head of Packaging Technologies at Valencia company, AINIA. He explained that a big problem with recycling is that there is often a degradation in the quality of the material in the process.
He added: “By using certain percentages of recycled material with virgin product, we can meet the requirements for packaging foods.â€
This is a solution that is being used today , with companies using similar techniques to make r-PET around the world, with some announcing r-PET percentages from 20% to 100% already.
-Public calling for increased plastics recycling in the UK
New research shows that 91% of UK adults believe the importance of increasing the amount we recycle will grow over the next five years and that the key area to focus our efforts on is plastics recycling.
Currently only 9% of the plastics worldwide are recycled but if all plastic was recycled then we could save 30-150 millions tonnes of carbon annually.
This means that if we recycle plastics we avoid the 61% contribution of plastics emissions. The public is calling for more sustainable solutions and to focus on plastics recycling. Plastic BioPolymers PP Polyolefins
The research also showed that 56% of people believe that there is ‘too little’ information on recycling.
Although different councils have different waste rules, Defra’s Resources and Waste Strategy will set out to simplify this through the harmonisation of waste collection associated with a clear labelling system which is a much needed step for creating a fully functioning circular and sustainable system.
When asked, the survey also found 40% of people said their plastic consumption has decreased in the last year; only 44% of people tend to recycle textiles; 48% tend to recycle food waste; and only 41% tend to recycle e-waste.
During PET preform production, the molecule acetaldehyde (AA) is formed as a byproduct of PET. Although AA is a naturally occurring substance, it has a sweet taste and can cause an “off” flavor in applications such as bottled water. For 20 years, there were strict patents in place around the globe concerning this type of packaging additive and who could supply and produce it. -Plastic waste: Europe is not recycling enough
As a result of more stringent standards, recycling of plastic packaging is set to fall in the EU. Without better industrial capacity, the EU will not reach its 50% target in five years’ time. And illegal exports are likely to increase
The EU is facing a growing problem in managing its plastic waste, warns a report by the European Court of Auditors. The main issue is the biggest component of the waste – packaging. Its production is growing steadily and last year was around 18 million tonnes. Plastic BioPolymers PP Polyolefins
Packaging accounts for just over 60 percent of total plastic waste in Europe. And while the lifespan of plastic stretches over centuries, 40 percent of the EU’s plastic production is destined for packaging that will be thrown away.
But from 1 January 2021 the management of this waste will be seriously complicated for European operators. An amendment to the Basel Convention on the export of hazardous waste, adopted in May 2019, comes into force on that date. Most plastics have hitherto been included on the list of non-hazardous waste, known as the “Green List”. From now on, only recyclable materials that are uncontaminated, pre-sorted, free of any non-recyclable material and prepared for immediate recycling in an environmentally sound manner will be eligible for inclusion on the Green List.

Initiative seeks to stimulate demand for recycled plastics by encouraging consumers to buy products with recycled content.
The Foundation for Plastic Recycling, established by the Association of Plastic Recyclers (APR), Washington, has launched the Buy Recycled campaign, an initiative designed to stimulate market demand for recycled plastics.
The campaign seeks to educate consumers about plastics recycling and encourage them to purchase products made with postconsumer resin (PCR).
According to a news release about the initiative, “When consumers rethink their everyday purchases and buy products made with recycled content, they help boost market demand, benefit the environment and support U.S. jobs.”
