Ecovyst Inc. has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with ChiralVision B.V., a specialist in enzyme immobilization, to collaborate on breakthroughs in industrial biocatalysis. This strategic partnership aims to harness the expertise of both companies to develop innovative technologies that enhance the efficiency and sustainability of enzyme-based industrial processes.

Ecovyst brings a deep understanding of silica technology and advanced material science to the collaboration, while ChiralVision adds its proven capabilities in support functionalization and immobilized biocatalyst solutions. Together, the two companies will focus on creating tailored enzyme immobilization technologies that improve enzyme stability, enhance biocatalysis performance, and enable cost-effective, greener production methods across various industries. Trump Revives Plastic Straws: “Back to Plastics!” Campaign Announced

U.S. President Donald Trump has unveiled a bold new initiative titled “Back to Plastics!” aimed at reinstating plastic straws, arguing that “paper straws don’t work.” The announcement was made on his Truth Social platform, marking a stark policy reversal from the previous Biden administration’s stance on single-use plastics.

Trump’s executive order seeks to roll back regulations that had restricted plastic straws in favor of biodegradable alternatives. The initiative has garnered strong backing from the Plastics Industry Association. “Plastic is the best material for nearly every application and is sustainable,” said the association’s president, Matt Seaholm. “Straws are just the beginning—this movement deserves nationwide support.”  Plastic Straws

The Biden administration had previously sought to eliminate plastic straws from federal government buildings, one of the world’s largest purchasers of consumer goods, as part of broader environmental efforts. The push against plastic was in response to growing concerns about pollution and its impact on marine ecosystems.

Trump’s decision underscores his administration’s pro-business and anti-regulation approach. By advocating for plastic straws, he positions himself as a defender of consumer choice and industry interests, a move popular among his supporters who often criticize environmental regulations as government overreach.

Plastics Industry Association officials have praised the policy shift. “We appreciate President Trump’s leadership in recognizing the value of plastics,” Seaholm added. “We look forward to working with his administration to advance our industry.”

Environmental groups, however, have expressed strong opposition. Many argue that single-use plastics contribute significantly to pollution, especially in oceans, where they harm marine life. The debate over plastic straws became a cultural flashpoint in recent years, with many conservatives ridiculing bans as excessive government interference. Trump’s campaign previously capitalized on this sentiment, even selling branded plastic straws as a fundraising effort.

Despite the controversy, Trump remains firm in his stance. “Americans deserve straws that work,” he stated, reinforcing his belief that plastic is superior to paper alternatives.
