Michael Heinz, CEO of BASF Corp, addressed the need for a more sustainable plastics industry during his keynote at NPE2024
He highlighted the dual aspects of plastics, acknowledging their role in advancing technology like electric vehicles and wind turbines, but also pointed out the low recycling rates, with only 9% of plastics being recycled. Heinz emphasized the need for industry-wide cooperation with NGOs and governments to enhance sustainability.
Heinz has led BASF’s North American operations since 2021, overseeing 16,000 employees. He has been part of BASF for over four decades and has been a board member since 2011. R-PET Bottles Prices
During his speech, he underscored the financial challenges of sustainability, noting that achieving it requires significant capital investments. He pointed out that although there is growing consumer support for sustainable products, only about 20% are willing to pay the higher prices these products necessitate.
The CEO also discussed ongoing global negotiations aimed at reducing plastic pollution, expressing optimism about reaching a meaningful agreement. BASF is actively participating in these discussions, aiming to shape the outcomes toward more sustainable practices. R-PET Bottles Prices
At the trade show, BASF showcased several innovations, including using chemically recycled monomers for creating new plastics. This process involves pyrolysis, which breaks down plastic waste into monomers that can be reused. Heinz stressed the need to educate stakeholders about this technology to overcome misconceptions and facilitate its acceptance.
Additionally, BASF has been working on recycling nylon fibers, collaborating with Zara to produce jackets made entirely from recycled nylon, which quickly sold out. This initiative is part of BASF’s broader efforts to reduce the carbon footprint of products, such as Adidas shoes, through materials that lower carbon dioxide emissions. R-PET Bottles Prices
Heinz also touched on BASF’s commitments to renewable energy, noting that the company produces about 50% of its own power, often more efficiently than national grids. He announced further investments in wind energy, aligning with BASF’s goal to generate 60% of its energy from renewable sources by 2030.
Concluding his address, Heinz reiterated that sustainability is imperative for the industry, encouraging attendees to collaborate and innovate towards greener manufacturing and products. He described sustainability as essential for continued relevance and success in the industry. R-PET Bottles Prices
